This research was intended to look at the speech acts and politeness forms used by Prophet Muhammad. Moreover, it was also aimed to know the secret use of politeness on various speech acts in the lettersto the kings. The letters analyzed in this discussion were the letters containing a call to embrace Islam to the three kings of great kingdoms outside the Arabian Peninsula, Abyssinia al-Najasy (Ethiopia), Emperor Heraclius (Roman), and Kisra (Persia). The language analysis methodof Eunar Haugen was used in this research. Searle (1969) speech acts and Leech (1983)politeness was used as thetheory. The result showed that the letters mostly used a form of indirect speech acts with imperatives. In any form of speech used contained politeness maxims formulated by Leech used without recourse. The use of different linguistic politeness makes different influence on the king recipients. Once it is united to convince the recipients, it will make them sure to accept Islam.DOI: 10.15408/a.v3i2.3622

Abstract

This paper discussed a model of syllabus design for Arabic for specific purposes (Arabic for military journalism). Arabic for Specific Purposes (ASP) failed to meet its objectives due to the shortage of teaching references including syllabus and curriculum specification, teaching methods, teaching techniques, and strategies besides, the lack of the expertise considered as a main factor may led to those problems. However, the development of syllabus design in Arabic for military journalism relies on English for Specific Purposes entirely in term of element or criteria for it experienced on specific language learning and teaching for more than 40 years. Consequently, the research tried to design a model of Arabic for Specific purposes. Students’ need is prime criteria that should be considered before designing the syllabus for Arabic for Specific purposes, besides the characteristics of ASP. Finally, this study can be considered as a pioneer in developing the Arabic for specific purposes syllabus.DOI: 10.15408/a.v3i2.3679

Abstract

This study was aimed at illustrating the Arabic language poet (al-Mutanabbi) with the theme of satire: his satire of Kafur who frustrated al-Mutanabbi's hopes. The study also examined the poem psychologically and rhetorically. The comparative study was built upon the comparison of the existence with the other that raises the inferior and lowers the case of the superior. Therefore, al-Mutanabbi compared between Kafur and others and compared fairly between Kafur and Sayf al-Dawleh until it turned the praised character into a rebuked one under the absence of the addressee (the praised figure) and the presence of the rebuked addressee (the one who is satired). In this study, it was examined the justifications of the transformation from praise to satire which became obvious in many of Al- Mutanabbi's poems which he recited in praising Kafur implicitly and explicitly.DOI: 10.15408/a.v3i2.4039

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine Arabic reading speed (at word level) for students in Germany, who acquire literacy in German primary schools and who speak Arabic as a mother tongue and German as a second language. This study is the first one in this research field. Acquiring Arabic literacy is challenging, on one hand because of Arabic diglossia and on the other hand very few German schools offer a chance to receive lessons in vernacular language. The finding showed a significant difference between the group (bilingual students who received Arabic lessons at school) and the group (bilingual students who received Arabic lessons at the mosque), indicating that students (groupone) benefit from literacy lessons at German schools. The data indicate that professional teachers and adequate textbooks are a prerequisite for teaching Arabic at mosques.DOI: 10.15408/a.v3i2.4582
