Abstract

The study investigated the level of attitudes towards the education of students with learning disabilities among teachers in regular education classrooms. It also examined the influence of four teachers' demographic factors on their attitudes towards education of students with learning disabilities in regular classrooms Ibadan, Nigeria. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study whilst the multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted to select the study sample. A total of 125 teachers participated in the study, 64 (51.2%) were males whilst 61 (48.8%) were females. A self-designed questionnaire tagged Teachers' Attitude towards Education of Students with Learning Disabilities in Regular Education Classrooms (TAESLDRECQ) with a reliability of 0. 81 was utilized to collect data. One research question and four hypotheses were generated and tested. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistics were employed to analyze the data generated from the participants at 0.05 level of significance. Whilst the result of the research question reveals a grand mean of 2.59 which is slightly higher than the criterion mean of 2.50, the result from the test of norm showed that 9.6% (n=12) teachers had negative attitude, whilst 90.4% (n=113) teachers had positive attitude. Therefore, it was concluded that there is a positive attitude towards education of students with learning disabilities in regular education classrooms. The results shows that teachers' attitudes towards education of students with learning disabilities in regular education classrooms based on: gender (Crit-t = 1.96, Cal.t = 1.440, DF = 123; educational qualification (F = 1.630, p(.171)>.05); years of experience (F = 2.329, p(.102)>.05); and category of students taught which could be either junior secondary or senior secondary class (Crit-t = 1.96, Cal.t = .035, DF = 123, p(0.973) towards education of students with learning disabilities in regular education classrooms. Hence, it was concluded that teachers' attitude towards education of students with learning disabilities is the same irrespective of their gender, educational qualification, years of experience and category of student taught (either junior secondary or senior secondary class). On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that there should be more trainings and in-service professional development programmes such as orientation, workshops, seminars, conferences to allow teachers in regular education classrooms to acquire knowledge, skills and values required for the adequate education of students with learning disabilities in their classrooms.

Abstract

Most of researches have reported the significance of English phonemic awareness to the success of learning English, but less discussions involving students with visual disabilities. Students with visual disabilities lacks of visual input and form a strong sensitivity to audio input, researches have reported that this condition affect their spelling ability, yet, their ability in recognizing English phonemes has been less explored especially in Indonesia. Thus, this research aims to describe the phonemic awareness of students with visual disabilities who learn English as Foreign Language. The participants of this research are students with visual disabilities whether active or passive braille user. 7 students with visual disabilities participated in an Online English Phonemic Awareness Test. Two independent raters rated the data independently. Interrater agreement was applied to ensure the objectivity of two independent interrater. The findings show that students with visual disabilities are aware of consonants Fricative alveolar, Plosive bilabial, and Plosive alveolar sounds but struggling with Fricative velar and Affricative velar sound, they are also aware of vowels Close mid front vowel, Close front long vowel sounds, Close mid back vowel and Open central vowel but struggling in identifying Open back vowel, Close mid central vowel, and Open mid back vowel. English phonemic awareness is a very important basic thing in language learning. However, it will be very challenging for ESL learners, especially those who learn are blind students because of certain obstacles that blind students have so that strategies are needed in language learning.

Abstract

The development of technology is very helpful in teaching and learning in general. However, these developments can also be used for students with disabilities, especially those who have communication disorders and deafness. But in reality, teachers are still limited in managing the development of teaching materials even though school facilities are sufficient to do that. This is very reasonable considering the limitations of educators who must specifically focus on trends in the development of technology-based education. The interactive method is one alternative solution, especially the role of multimedia technology in learning media. At the school for students with disabilities in Denpasar, SLB B Sidakarya for the category of communication disorder and deafness requires the media to follow these developments. In the initial design stage, taking vocabulary content for grade 1 students, by gathering various data needs, especially from the users, namely teachers and students. The data then becomes the basis for designing interactive multimedia vocabulary learning, which is the basic development of several subjects. The media will have a positive impact, especially increasing student interest in school, with files that are relatively lightweight and processed in design research, expected to be easier for students to learn. This media can also be a medium to help when students study at home, especially the Covid-19 pandemic period, certainly helped by collaboration between the school and design practitioners. In addition to vocabulary, it is also expected to be able to motivate development in other media to assist persons with disabilities in learning, especially in pandemic situations.

Abstract

There are no national laws in Indonesia which requires educational authorities to provide Invidualised Transition Plans (ITPs) towards high school students with disabilities. It leads issues as to low education attainments the students from this population have as well as small numbers of the students entering universities and job markets. In lieu of legislations, it is argued that Indonesia has signed international agreement and policies which are actually meant to provide ITPs to secondary students with disabilities to improve their post school outcomes education, employment and independent living for this vulnerable group. Hence, document analysis methods were employed in this research to analyse the international, national and local policies that the country has been signed through analyzing the statements aligned with evidence-based transition skills and predictors. The method employed by O'Neill et al. (2016) was replicated to condense the list of practices in the NTACT website into broader categories to address youths academic, employment, and independent living needs. As for the international policy, 19 transition-aligned statements were found, accounting for community involvement, interagency collaboration and inclusion in general education. Meanwhile for the national policy documents, only 15 statements were aligned. Implication for policymakers and educational jurisdictions are also discussed.

Abstract

Efficient skills in reading comprehension enable secondary school students to make meaningful and remarkable advancements in their studies. However, many students with learning disabilities struggle with reading comprehension and consequently obtain low grades in their academic pursuits. This paper pointed out that improvement in reading comprehension and academic achievement among secondary school students with learning disabilities is possible through engaging the students in collaborative learning activities within reading comprehension context. The paper therefore highlighted the principles that guide collaborative classrooms and the benefits of student collaboration in reading comprehension context. Evidence-based interventions that emphasize collaboration such as cooperative learning, peer tutoring, reciprocal teaching, collaborative strategic reading, and directed reading-thinking activity were discussed. Recommendations were made which include that teachers should ensure that they infuse collaboration into reading comprehension lessons of students with learning disabilities by making use of a variety of teaching strategies that stress collaboration, assigning roles to group members and ensuring that group members adhere to the laid down rules for the groups.

Abstract

Stigma and discrimination against persons with mental disorder has been a global issue. The negative impacts of this includes serious barrier to supportive government policies and detrimental effects to the quality of life of the stigmatized persons. Earlier studies suggest that stigma has been observed among professionals such as medical doctors, nurses, and counselors. This research aims to understand how students of related academic fields such as medicine, psychology, and counseling regard persons with schizophrenia as measured by the Bogardus Social Distance Scale. The study was conducted to 230 students studying in health-related fields (Medicine, Psychology, and Counseling students). Analysis of data were conducted with an independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Simple Regression techniques. The results show that students from the health-related field have serious issues with stigma. The majority of the students are not willing to include a person with schizophrenia as their family member or caregiver. Students who have had earlier contact them tend to have lower stigma. However, students who have family members with schizophrenia have a higher stigma. The medical students tend to have higher stigma compared to psychology and other students.
