Abstract

This study examines the association between the adoption of mangrove-based dodol (a traditional Indonesian chewy confection) innovation and changes in economic resilience among members of the Wilmar Employees’ Wives Association (IIKW) in Dumai City, Riau Province. A quasi-experimental design combining Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and Difference-in-Differences (DID) was applied to 50 households (25 adopters and 25 non-adopters) observed before the intervention in 2021 and after the intervention in 2024. PSM was used to improve baseline comparability, while DID estimated differential changes between groups over time. After matching, the mean standardized bias decreased from 13.9% to 3.5%, and post-matching covariates were statistically balanced. The estimated DID effects were positive for monthly household income (+IDR 1.10 million; p = 0.011), income-source diversification (+1.02 sources; p = 0.034), savings share (+5.9 percentage points; p = 0.030), productive assets (+IDR 5.2 million; p = 0.016), and the Economic Resilience Index (ERI) (+0.15; p = 0.012), while the food-expenditure share declined by 7.0 percentage points (p = 0.026). These estimates suggest that mangrove-based dodol adoption was associated with improved economic resilience within the matched study population. However, the small sample limits statistical power, sensitivity to outliers, and external validity; therefore, the findings should be interpreted as localized evidence rather than population-wide effects.

Abstract

The Oesapa coastal area in Kupang City is a community-based fish landing site utilized for fish processing activities; however, its utilization has not been optimal, thereby affecting the welfare of fish-processing communities. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the welfare of Small-Scale Fish Processing Communities and to identify the dominant factors that take priority in a risk management framework. The methods used include multiple linear regression to analyze the factors affecting the community welfare, while the House of Risk (HOR) was used to identify and prioritize risk sources. The regression showed that the welfare of fish-processing communities was significantly influenced by ecological, technological, social, and economic factors, with the regression equation Y = 7.354 + 0.136x₁ + 0.394x₂ + 0.099x₃ + 0.613x₄. Risk identification resulted in  16 risk events and 30 risk agents. HOR Phase 1 identified 20 priority risk agents, which were subsequently translated into 15 mitigation strategies. Furthermore, the ETD values obtained from HOR Phase 2 indicated that conducting regular fish processing training based on appropriate technology (P3) was the mitigation strategy with the highest (ETD) value. These findings provide a basis to establish priorities for more targeted risk mitigation programs aimed at improving the welfare of fish-processing communities.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the differences in conflict type and geographical location on fisheries conflict scores among traditional fishers in Larantuka District, East Flores Regency, using a two-way ANOVA approach. Fisheries conflicts in small-scale fisheries are commonly associated with competition over fishing grounds, unequal access to fishing technology, and pressure on marine resources. Primary data were collected through structured interviews with 45 traditional fishers from three coastal villages, with each respondent evaluating two categories of fisheries conflict, resulting in 90 observations included in the statistical analysis. The results showed that conflict scores differed significantly between the two fisheries conflict categories, indicating significant differences between the two categories of fisheries conflict evaluated in this study. Geographical location also differed significantly, suggesting that differences in local ecological, socio-economic, and institutional conditions contributed to variations in conflict scores among the study villages. However, the interaction between conflict type and geographical location was not significant, indicating that similar structural drivers of fisheries conflict exist across the study locations. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening equitable access to fisheries resources, improving community-based fisheries governance, and implementing adaptive fisheries management strategies to reduce fisheries conflicts in traditional fishing communities.

Abstract

Climate change increases the vulnerability of coastal fishing communities, making strengthening the blue economy through collaborative governance crucial for enhancing resilience. This study analyzes the implementation of the Pentahelix model in strengthening the blue economy as a climate change mitigation strategy in the fishing communities of South Malang. An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was used, combining qualitative data from in-depth interviews and observations with representatives of Pentahelix actors and quantitative analysis using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Qualitative findings indicate that although the government, academics, business actors, the community, and the media have fulfilled their respective roles, collaboration remains fragmented due to limited coordination, inadequate stakeholder participation, and inadequate integration of research findings into policy formulation. The AHP analysis produced consistent results (CR = 1.00%), indicating reliable priority rankings. Socio-economic impacts emerged as the highest-priority criterion (27.14%), while sustainable marine tourism diversification was identified as the main strategic alternative (22.34%) with a consistent ratio (CR = 1.48%). This strategy is considered capable of diversifying fishermen's livelihoods, reducing dependence on capture fisheries, and increasing community resilience while preserving coastal ecosystems.
