Abstract

Fishing communities in coastal areas face significant social, ecological, and food vulnerabilities due to climate change, tidal flooding (rob), and economic dependence on marine resources. These conditions create pressing challenges for housing and settlement planning, highlighting the need for adaptive, inclusive, and resilient design strategies. This study applies a Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach to explore solutions for inclusive and resilient fishermen’s housing. The methodology follows three key stages: (a) inspiration; gathering insights on community needs, behaviors, and cultural practices through participatory observation and in-depth interviews; (b) ideation; developing design concepts responsive to local lifestyles, spatial patterns, rapid construction and availability of material resources; and (c) implementation; prototyping and evaluating design solutions through user feedback. Findings reveal that integrating spatial flexibility, adaptive use of local materials, and features supporting self-sufficient food practices, such as hydroponic spaces and small-scale seafood processing areas, could significantly enhance both social and ecological resilience. The study further demonstrates that a Human-Centered Design framework enables communities to actively manage living environments, optimize daily routines, and strengthen economic and food autonomy. These insights provide actionable guidance for developing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable coastal housing, contributing to a broader understanding of resilient architecture in vulnerable human settlements.

Abstract

Digital heritage preservation is often hampered by high costs and limited access to cutting edge technologies such as laser scanning, especially for communities in developing countries. The emergence of mobile photogrammetry supported by smartphone applications such as Polycam offers a low cost and sophisticated solution for documenting architectural heritage. This study aims to compare the comparative reliability of Android (Samsung A55) and iOS (iPhone 13 Pro with LiDAR) devices in documenting architectural heritage elements in Indonesia. Data collection was conducted by evaluating the comparative features of Polycam on both platforms based on features, image upload capacity, processing time, output quality, and the strength and weaknesses of both platforms. The findings show that Android devices provide more efficient and user-friendly data collection while iPhone (iOS) devices produce more detailed and refined outputs, although the reconstruction process takes longer than Android. This study concludes that cross-platform mobile photogrammetry can play an important role in sustainable architecture research, enabling community based participation and academic exploration. This research positions mobile photogrammetry as a transformative tool for heritage preservation in the era of Society 5.0.

Abstract

The design of street furniture in urban heritage corridors significantly influences the social and cultural design of its urban life. Kayutangan, a cultural heritage site in Malang city, has undergone several phases of revitalization. However, the suitability of street furniture elements and cultural heritage value remains a concern. This study aims to evaluate public preferences for street furniture elements in the Kayutangan corridor area. This study employs a descriptive quantitative method using a Likert scale questionnaire, involving 115 respondents. The data were analysed using mean scores, ANOVA, independent t-test samples, and multiple regression analysis. The research variables consist of: aesthetics, safety, comfort, accessibility, functionality, suitability, and the historical corridor area appeal. The result shows that the functionality variable becomes an important element of street furniture in assisting users' activity. Lamp design in heritage style is found to have historical regional characteristics, and the shelter does not reach acceptable user preferences. Multiple regression analysis shows that heritage character compatibility is the most important factor for people's preferences. This finding provides evidence-based guidelines for designing street furniture that is historically context-sensitive, thus facilitating the revitalization of urban areas.

Abstract

Green open spaces (GOS) in Jakarta play a vital role in supporting the psychological well-being of its users, but not much is known about whether the design of GOS is related to users’ perception of its restorative quality. To broaden such knowledge, this study aims to explore the relationship between visual components in GOS and its perceived restorative quality while using Lapangan Banteng as a case study. A survey research method was applied, in which a structured questionnaire is employed to gather park users’ perceptions of its visual components and restorative quality. Relationships between variables are then explored using correlation analysis, which revealed that several visual components, such as vegetation density, pavement patterns, and natural materials in Lapangan Banteng, had strong to moderate and statistically significant correlations across multiple dimensions of perceived restorative quality. The results indicated that certain visual components could potentially bring positive contributions to its users’ psychological well-being, but further research is needed to test whether those relationships are positively or negatively related.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze user behaviour in an urban park, where activities vary across different zones and time periods within the same area. Observations were conducted across eight time sessions, both on weekdays and weekends. A behavior mapping method that used place-centered mapping was used, and 1,899 users were recorded. The findings indicate that user behavior varies significantly across time and space. Most people visit in the morning and afternoon, but fewer people visit at noon due to thermal discomfort. Visits on the weekend are more common and have a higher percentage of active participation. In terms of space, Zones A and B are where people are actively involved in social and play activities, while Zones C and D are mostly where people are passively enjoying recreation and meals. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of temporal and spatial analysis. It demonstrates that behavioral variation occurs at a micro-scale across zones within a single park and changes over time. This study enhances user-oriented urban park planning by offering empirical evidence on the combined effects of spatial configuration and temporal rhythms on user behavior. The results show how important it is to design urban parks that can handle a wide range of activities, temporal dynamics, and spatial functions in order to enhance usage and inclusivity.

Abstract

Natural daylight plays an essential role in providing visual comfort in office spaces while reducing reliance on artificial lighting, thereby supporting green building principles. This study was conducted at the Jasa Raharja Office in South Jakarta, a building designed in accordance with green building principles and featuring a modern open-plan office layout. The workspace is surrounded by windows that serve as the primary source of daylight, with roller blinds used to regulate daylight penetration. A quantitative approach was employed through field measurements and DIALux Evo simulations to evaluate daylight performance under actual office conditions. Illuminance data were collected at several measurement points and empirically validated against the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The simulation results indicated an average illuminance of 577 lux with the roller blinds half-open, while field measurements showed an average of 469 lux, yielding an agreement of 81.2%. However, fully exposing the windows without daylight control is not recommended, as it produces an average illuminance of 1,214 lux, which may cause glare and visual fatigue.

Abstract

Vernacular architectural transformation reflects the ongoing negotiation between local wisdom and modernization. This study examines material transformation in the berugaq, a traditional communal structure of the Sasak community in Bayan, North Lombok, and its implications for cultural identity. A qualitative comparative case study was conducted in two neighboring villages, Karang Bajo and East Bayan. Data were collected through field observations, photographic documentation, and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a comparative thematic approach. The findings reveal contrasting patterns of material adaptation. Karang Bajo largely retains traditional materials, such as bamboo and thatch roofing, reflecting a strong commitment to cultural preservation and ecological harmony. In contrast, East Bayan adopts modern materials, including zinc roofing and metal connectors, driven by considerations of durability, availability, and maintenance efficiency. The findings suggest that material transformation does not necessarily result in cultural loss but can represent a process of adaptive continuity, whereby traditional forms, functions, and meanings are selectively maintained while accommodating contemporary needs. This study contributes to discussions on vernacular transformation and sustainable architecture by highlighting how local communities negotiate between heritage preservation and modernization through material practices.

Abstract

The growing adoption of augmented reality (AR) in heritage tourism has created new opportunities for visitor interpretation and engagement. However, most AR applications remain content-oriented and pay limited attention to the spatial characteristics of heritage environments. This study examines how spatially embedded gamified AR narratives influence spatial experience and architectural interpretation in urban heritage settings. A sequential mixed-methods approach was conducted at three heritage sites in Chengdu, China, representing linear, axial, and dispersed spatial typologies. Data were collected through pre- and post-AR surveys with 372 participants, semi-structured interviews with 48 respondents, behavioural observations, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results show that spatial narrative coherence—the alignment between AR task logic and spatial syntax—is the strongest predictor of spatial immersion (β = 0.59) and indirectly enhances architectural interpretation (β = 0.32). These effects are moderated by visitor typology, with explorers and gamers benefiting most. The findings demonstrate the importance of space-centred AR design and propose a spatially adaptive framework that aligns narrative structures with heritage environments, offering practical guidance for architects, heritage managers, and AR developers.

Abstract

Rapid urban densification, environmental constraints, and socio-economic pressures have intensified interest in compact living environments. Although research on tiny houses and small dwellings has expanded, existing studies remain fragmented, emphasizing technical performance, sustainability, or lifestyle motivations without providing a coherent theoretical foundation for spatial smallness. This study develops Tiny Space Architecture (TSA) as a theoretical framework that reconceptualizes spatial limitation as a generative and ethical architectural condition. Using a dialectical-critical approach, it systematically reviews and interprets philosophical and architectural literature published between 1800 and 2025 through conceptual mapping, comparative analysis, and theoretical synthesis. The findings identify three architectural registers of tiny space and formulate five core concepts: spatial compression, spatial fluidity, architecture as control, conditions of scarcity, and recalibration of relief. Integrated through ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions, these concepts define TSA. The study positions spatial limitation as a productive rather than deficient design condition, providing a theoretical foundation for future research on compact living, sustainability, and spatial justice.

Abstract

Warung Madura, small convenience stores operated by Madurese migrants across urban Jakarta, represent a pervasive yet spatially understudied form of informal live-work space. This study examines domesticity within these environments as a condition where residential and commercial functions overlap. Domesticity is understood not merely as the presence of household elements, but as spatial and social practices that generate comfort, familiarity, and everyday meaning. Using visual ethnography approach, this research draws on field observations, visual documentation, and semi-structured interviews at two Warung Madura purposively selected from 15 mapped cases in Kelurahan Cipedak, analyzed through frameworks of urban domesticity, spatial appropriation, and live-work typologies. The findings indicate that domesticity is produced through flexible spatial arrangements, continuous negotiation between public and private uses, and social relations that foster attachment and a sense of spatial ownership, within contexts of economic precarity and unequal power relations between owners and caretakers.  Rather than functioning solely as sites of economic survival, Warung Madura emerged as meaningful spaces for identity formation, social interaction, and everyday urban life among low-income communities. This study contributes to discussions on urban domesticity, informal economies, and live–work typologies in dense urban environments, with particular relevance to Southeast Asian informal settlement contexts.
