ARBITRER Jurnal Masyarakat Linguistik Indonesia, merupakan jurnal ilmiah yang menyajikan artikel orisinil tentang pengetahuan dan informasi penelitian atau aplikasi penelitian dan pengembangan terkini dalam bidang ilmu bahasa (linguistik). Jurnal ini merupakan sarana publikasi dan ajang berbagi informasi keilmuan terkait dan pengembangannya di bidang humaniora khususnya linguistic, yang diterbitkan oleh program studi Linguistik Unand. Pemuatan artikel di jurnal ini dialamatkan ke alamat editor. Informasi lengkap untuk pemuatan artikel dan petunjuk penulisan artikel tersedia di dalam setiap terbitan. Artikel yang diterbitkan telah melalui proses seleksi oleh editior dan reviewer. Jurnal ini terbit secara berkala sebanyak dua kali dalam setahun (April dan Oktober). Artikel yang lolos seleksi akan dipungut biaya guna keberlanjutan jurnal, sedangkan pengiriman naskah tidak dipungut biaya. Abstract

This study aims to explain the role of ethnic humor as a practice of marginalization against minority ethnic groups in Indonesia. The research data consists of 270 instances of ethnic humor sourced from books, websites, and social media. The data were analyzed using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis approach, which includes three stages: description, interpretation, and explanation. Textual characteristics of ethnic humor were analyzed using SketchEngine, a corpus management and text analysis software developed by Lexical Computing. The findings indicate that ethnic humor can marginalize minority ethnic groups in Indonesia through three mechanisms: (1) negatively representing the targeted ethnic group, (2) constructing unequal social relations, and (3) justifying the behavior of the targeted ethnic group as inferior, strange, or even negative. The ideology embedded in ethnic humor discourse can be traced through patterns of language use, including word choice, sentence structure, and discourse organization. Words, sentence strcuture, and discourse organization are ideological because they contain experiential, relational, and expressive values. The results of this study reveal that ethnic humor, often appreciated for its entertainment value, can marginalize minority ethnic groups in two ways: by restricting their identity and roles. These findings reinforce previous research, such as that conducted by Pérez (2022), which argues that the ideological nature of ethnic humor can be harmful as it reinforces the dominance of majority groups. This finding also reinforce the findings of Mendiburo-Seguel & Ford (2023) which show that ethnic humor can strengthen ethnic prejudice. This situation suggests that ethnic humor should be approached cautiously to avoid negative impacts on Indonesia’s multiethnic society.

Abstract

This paper discusses the design for developing the Minangkabau language corpus, especially regarding the opportunities and challenges. The corpus development of Minangkabau is a crucial project to document, preserve, and revive the treasure trove of culture within the language. The availability of a Minangkabau language corpus can open opportunities for more intensive research on the Minangkabau language with a more modern and data-based approach. It can also encourage the development of Minangkabau corpus-based teaching materials. The corpus is manually assembled using various sources’ comprehensive data collection, annotation, and curation pipelines. These may be manuscripts, books, newspapers, or other written texts and spontaneous conversations, such as interviews or public speeches. Multimedia resources, such as television and radio broadcasts, audio-video recordings, and social media content, also add to the diversity of data gathered. The availability of accessible digital sources, such as online videos, online radio programs, and ebooks, can make data collection easier. However, several challenges may appear in developing the Minangkabau language corpus, such as limited technology accessibility, dialect variations, and the involvement of highly skilled human resources. This paper explains some opportunities for developing the Minangkabau language corpus and increasing the role of the corpus in revitalizing and documenting the Minangkabau language. Furthermore, the availability of the Minangkabau language corpus can also be a starting point for developing linguistic technology, such as voice recognition, text-to-speech, and natural language processing.

Abstract

The translation of song lyrics is challenging for translators primarily due to the intricate poetic and musical elements, which often compel them to employ specific strategies for effective translation. This study was an attempt to investigate the translation strategies in selected translated movie song lyrics and explore the challenges in translating the lyrics. In this qualitative study, the songs were purposefully selected from “Mulan” (1998) and “Aladdin” (2019) movies. Low’s (2013) translation strategies were applied during the process of translation. The “Translation” (transfer of material with a reasonably high degree of semantic fidelity), and “Replacement” (a re-creation of text by only preserving the music element) strategies were found as the common strategies in the translation of song lyrics. The use of a replacement strategy could be due to technical difficulties in translating songs, such as the constraint of rhythm, hence a total replacement of meanings to match the rhythm of the song. A significant challenge in translating song lyrics from English to Chinese was in translating the concept of face-saving, which is an eminent process in social interactions in Chinese culture. It was concluded that the use of a translation strategy depended on the lyrics, translators’ creativity, melody, rhyme, and the differences between the languages and cultures, while the “skopos”, i.e., the correspondence of aim/purpose in the source and target cultures should play the key role.

Abstract

Kamus Dewan Perdana (KDP) is the largest and most complete dictionary of the Malay language (ML) and is the latest edition of the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), which targets ML native speakers and non-native speakers who are proficient in using ML. This study aims to identify Arabic loanwords (AL) in KDP and analyse questions of their entry regarding the aspects of etymology, word class, and definition from the perspective of users and researchers by using Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) as the methodology. The findings of this study found a total of 2847 entries of AL in KDP, which include 66% labelled Arabic (Ar) and 34% unlabelled. This study also found seven questions regarding AL entries in the KDP from the aspects of etymology, word class, and definition. Three questions arise from the etymological aspect, namely, (1) the inconsistent omission of etymological labelling, (2) the differences in terms of etymological labelling between KDP and Kamus Dewan Edisi Keempat (KDE4), and (3) justification for the source language information of the loanword placed at the end of the entry in the KDP; a question arises from the aspect of word class, which is the inconsistency in word class labelling for AL expression entries; and three questions from the aspect of definition, namely (1) the inaccuracy in the definition of homonymous word variations in KDP, (2) the absence of definition of the AL entries in the KDP and (3) the deletion of AL entry in the KDP. The results of this study serve as user feedback, which contributed to DBP as the body responsible for improving the compilation of KDP as well as other dictionaries such as Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (CALD), Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English New Edition (LDCENE), Oxford English Dictionaries (OED), and Concise Oxford English Dictionaries (COED). This improvement will in turn be able to provide complete vocabulary information to the user community, both among native speakers and non-native speakers.

Abstract

Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in EFL teaching and learning has brought about unimaginable opportunities to enhance learners’ fluency and proficiency in the target language as it is evident that employing AI tools helps learners develop their language skills, enhance engagement and motivation, ease foreign language anxiety, and ultimately acquire the target language. This meta-analysis aims to find out to what extent AI has impacted EFL teaching and learning by providing a systematic review of research papers published from 2020 to 2023. The review concentrated on four areas of EFL contexts: AI in EFL contexts, learners’ and teachers’ perceptions of AI tools, EFL learners’ motivations and engagements towards AI tools, and the integration of AI tools in language skills. The automated model developed by Guan et al.’s (2020) to collect published work from numerous databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, Semantic Scholar, and Google Scholar was adopted. Findings of this review exhibit that employing AI technologies in the EFL settings has significantly benefitted the process of teaching and learning resulting in the mastery of the productive skills on the part of learners. On the other hand, the review shows there is a current lack of research related to receptive skills. As far as the learners’ and teachers’ perspectives regarding the integration of AI tools are concerned, the review voiced favourable perceptions concerning utilizing AI tools; however, the pedagogical implications of utilizing AI tools from the teachers’ point of view have been insufficiently addressed by research conducted so far. Eventually, the current review outlined significant implications that provide a strong foundation for future research.

Abstract

This current study investigates how English language teachers in Indonesian higher educational institutions define and conceptualize intercultural literacy and practice it in their classrooms. Eight ELT practitioners were interviewed through narrative inquiry, and the data was analyzed using thematic analysis to explore their lived conceptualizations. The findings suggest three major themes on intercultural literacy, including conceptualization of intercultural literacy, implementation in professional practice, challenges in fostering intercultural understanding, and strategies to overcome these challenges. Teachers defined intercultural literacy as encompassing cultural understanding, adaptability, comparative analysis, and professional knowledge. They integrated it into their teaching through curriculum design, student-centered methods, and digital tools. This was done by weaving these into the curriculum design and retraining pedagogy with student-centric methods and other digital tools. However, the participants mentioned that they faced some obstacles, including institutional barriers, limited funding, and the difficulties of switching from the traditional to the newest teaching method. These issues were mitigated by professional development, collaboration, and inclusive instructional materials. The current research finding indicates the importance of comprehensive professional development and institutional support for teachers in developing intercultural competence in their students. These findings contribute to intercultural literacy in Indonesia and practical recommendations for improving it within Indonesian higher education. The finding highlights the how to prepare students for a globalized world through intercultural literacy and educator support.

Abstract

The study was conducted to identify relevant interactive methods of teaching English. For this purpose, a survey of the level of motivation to language learning was conducted, which included a pedagogical experiment with 46 students of 7 grades of the public school “Taalim”. The results of questionnaire survey of students and observation revealed a qualitative positive growth of linguistic creativity and motivation to learn English, due to the use of role-playing games and theatrical performances in lessons. To investigate the use of interactive techniques in English language teaching and to share experiences with colleagues, a conversation was held with 23 teachers, including undergraduates using these methods. The paper examines the concepts of motivation, play, dramatization, describes the main types and methods of using interactive techniques in teaching. It was determined that games and dramatization play an important role in learning. The use of role-playing games promotes language learning, helps to increase cognitive interest in the subject, while making the learning process less difficult, develops memory and thinking, focuses attention on a particular subject, and motivates students to learn English. Dramatization technologies develop imagination, contribute to the automatic understanding of rhymed language phrases, and the development of the student’s sensory and emotional sphere. The conducted research highlighted the main features of the use of game techniques in the process of teaching English and argued that it is important to introduce games and dramatization into the learning process. Interactive methods imply the interest of students in mastering a foreign language, the desire to perceive a foreign language and learn to speak a foreign language. Linguistic creativity and motivation are enhanced through role-playing and dramatization, enabling children to overcome the language barrier and increase their own self-esteem.

Abstract

Course retaking brings pivotal challenges for learning institutions all over the world. This urges many academicians to investigate the reasons why students retake courses. Therefore, this article identifies the micro and macro challenges associated with retaking a reading course. It also generates a remedial reading model for English as foreign language (EFL) contexts. Data was collected from reading course specifications, course report, and focused group discussions with six experienced language instructors at the preparatory year program of a Saudi university. Using grounded theory, the qualitative data was analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed a complex web of challenges associated with different stakeholders: the course retakers, language instructors, administration, and retakers’ families; all of them share the challenge of time constraints, especially after the shift from two to three semesters. At the micro level, course retakers struggle with poor foundational skills and demotivation, focusing on passing exams. They also lack exposure to English and seldom invest office hours for help. Language instructors struggle with learning materials, demotivation, and assessment. At the macro level, students’ families contribute to maximize these challenges. A gap exists between the intended learning outcomes and student levels and admission criteria. These challenges collectively hinder course retakers’ reading skills. The study generates a five-pillar bridging model that integrates learning outcomes, exam-oriented teaching strategies, simplified reading materials, technology-assisted reading, and motivational strategies to foster EFL remedial reading. The study recommends some pedagogical implications for remedial reading classes.

Abstract

Crisis communication must be prompt, accurate, and accessible to all. Government agencies often use multiple channels to disseminate critical information quickly. Social media has been helpful in informing all stakeholders about institutional short- and long-term interests as well as raising public health awareness. Mitigative strategies and crisis response are improved when crisis communication is tailored to the social, cultural, and economic context of minority communities. Identifying and directing communications that are unique to a group, however, presents difficulties when a crisis arises. Therefore, this research aims to investigate how the Malaysian Indian Agencies (MIAs), use social media to reach out to minority Malaysian Indians to disseminate information during the COVID-19 pandemic. 16 MIAs with active social media pages, Facebook and Twitter, registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) were shortlisted. Content analysis was performed on social media posts which were published from 18 March 2020 until 31 August 2020. The posts were categorized based on crisis communication strategies, outlined based on past studies. Subsequently, a semi-structured interview was conducted among the urban middle class and urban poor Indian residents in the Klang Valley. Findings reveal a notable paucity in the proactive presence of these agencies on social media platforms, indicating limited engagement in disseminating essential information during a crisis. While Facebook and Twitter were used, diverse channels like WhatsApp contributed to reaching out to the non-urban Indians. The use of Tamil shows efforts to overcome language barriers, supporting government initiatives to control the pandemic while potentially boosting the agencies’ political influence among Tamil-speaking communities. This study underscores the need for government agencies and community organizations to adapt their outreach methods to ensure all segments of the population, especially linguistic minorities, have access to timely and accurate information during a crisis.

Abstract

This study examines the formation of serial verbs in the Bugis Bone language utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach and typological analysis. Data were collected by observation, including audio recordings of Bugis speakers’ direct talk, and supplemented by interviews for contextual comprehension. The assessment focused on language structures, and identifying patterns and distributions of lexemes and phrases. The results demonstrate that Bugis serial verbs align with the worldwide typology of serial verbs, consisting of four syntactic categories and six semantic categories: movement, directional, manner, cause-effect, comitative, modality, and aspect. This work is significant for its contribution to linguistic typology, providing insights into the universal elements of serial verb formations and the distinct qualities of the Bugis Bone language. The results have ramifications for the comprehensive understanding of Austronesian languages, establishing a basis for comparative analyses and contributing to the preservation of linguistic variety. Moreover, the study enhances understanding of the functioning of serial verb formulations within a particular linguistic and cultural framework, hence advancing theoretical knowledge in syntax and semantics. Future research may explore Bugis sentence forms through other theoretical frameworks to enhance the understanding of Bugis language typology.
