Abstract

This paper investigated issues expressed with these idioms as well as the strategy for using them for various modern alcoholic drinks in Yoruba land. The paper adopted Mukarovsky's theory of Standard Language based on its ability to explain the deviant nature of the new Yoruba idioms as well as explaining 'differencia specifica' between the language of everyday conversation and Literary Language. Data were collected from different beer joints in Lagos State and Ògùn State respectively as States where most of these drinks are produced. Eventually, data were subjected to stylistic analysis. In all, sex is the only issue that was expressed. Sex, which was peculiar to all the alcoholic drinks, occurred in the context of 'eroticism', 'vulgarity', 'sexual style', and 'sexual positioning'. Only the metaphorisation linguistic strategy was employed for the coining of the idioms and was differentially derived from nominalizations, phonaesthetic coinages, and compositions. Nominalisations, compositions, and phonaesthetic coinages occurred in almost all the labels, and they were contextualized in eroticism ('Ọ̀ ṣọmọ', 'Alọmọ', 'Ògidigà' and 'O ́ ríjìn (ọ rí i jìn?); sexual style (Kòbókò, Kerewa, Pakurumo) while Dadubule revealed sexual positioning. New Yorùbá idioms, used to express-socio economic and emotive issues in routine communication, occurred in mediated and non-mediated contexts and were conveyed through metaphorisations. These idioms rethe flect dynamism and modernity-constrained stylistic choices in Yorùbá discourses.

Abstract

This paper explains the significance of neurolinguistics as one of interdisciplinary fields of linguistics encompassing the analytical procedures on individual speech disorders in producing and using language. The result of analysis is used for designing a model and strategy to improve their language capacity.  Neurolinguistics roadmap covers some previous researches done by Sastra et all since 2006. Those studies investigate language and speech disorders including thinking ailments, and answer the inherent question on neurolinguistics contribution for addressing the individual problems to express themselves. Those problems are caused by some disorders on the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Science wise, neurolinguistics will always develop because the language phenomena always happen in human life through thinking and speech.

Abstract

Spoken by a few members of the Pagu ethnic group in North Halmahera province, Pagu is one among endangered languages in Indonesia worth saving from extinction (Perangin-Angin, 2018). This study examines the preservation of Pagu by caring for the literary wealth in the language, i.e., folktales. Using Ecosophy as a theoretical trajectory, the analysis of the five Pagu folktales studied show that (1) Two creation fables are anthropocentric because the intention is to teach and impart values to people; (2) The other two are morality tales calling for people's care for and attention to the environment and all the ecosystems which have so far supported people's life. This study concludes that not only do traditional tales enhance language research and character education, they also deliver transformative power to call for an ethic of care – caring for the language and caring for the environment. Thus, the maintenance of the local culture, such as folktales, complements the language preservation efforts.

Abstract

This paper reports on a quasi-experimental study investigating the effects of a teaching methodology that combines Cognitive Linguistics (CL) and Corpus Linguistics (CrpL) insights on the acquisition of the two sets of English spatial prepositions of verticality, over/above and under/below. In addition, it is also concerned with learners’ attitudes towards the method of instruction. A total of 55 Moroccan first-year university students participated in this study, 22 of which were assigned to the experimental group, and 26 to the control group. The experimental group received what we termed the IPDDL instruction, which involves cognitive representations of the prepositions based on Image-schemas, the Principled Polysemy model, and Data-Driven Learning. The control group, in contrast, received a traditional instruction based on definitions and example sentences provided in dictionaries. Participants' performance was measured with pre-, post-, and delayed post-tests in the form of a semantic judgment task and a gap-filling task. The findings demonstrate that the IPDDL method of instruction was significantly more effective in helping students acquire vertical prepositions, and its advantages proved durable posterior to two weeks of the instruction period. Thus, this study lends support to the applicability of a CL-CrpL-inspired methodology in second language instruction.

Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the maxims of politeness used by female sellers in a traditional market in Sumatera Barat. The research was conducted in one tradititonal market in Sumatera Barat, namely Batu Sangkar. The data are any utterances produced by female sellers in a traditional market in a traditional market in Batu Sangkar. The data were taken by the observational method with note-taking, recording, and interviewing techniques. The analysis was done by using the concept proposed by (Oktavianus & Revita, 2013; Leech, 1983). The result of the analysis was descriptively done and used the chart. The percentage was also used to identify the number of maxims that occurred. Having analyzed the data, it is found that the female sellers used four maxims in their interaction with the buyers. They are 1) tact, 2) agreement, and 3)modesty. There are two types of agreement between the sellers and the buyers, namely using 1) verbal and 2) non-verbal agreement. The non-verbal agreement is the indication of the insincerity of the sellers of the price bargained by the buyers. The sellers do not get much profit from the price offered by the buyers.

Abstract

The research on emblematic meanings of traditional medicinal herbs is descriptive qualitative research. The data of the research were mostly obtained from texts containing descriptions of local wisdom values found in the names of traditional medicinal herbs. The data were also obtained from the researcher's intuitive ideas as a member of the community where the local wisdom is shared and lived by. The data were obtained by using two methods, namely observation, and speaking methods. The observation method was carried out by using a note-taking technique, while the speaking method was carried out by using the recording technique. The conversation between the researcher and the research informants was recorded and then transcribed to find the required data. The participatory interview method employed an in-depth interview to obtain the description of local wisdom values specifically. The proliferation of data was concluded by classifying and typifying the data after being identified from the sources. Data analysis was carried out using the distributional method with a direct element division technique to cover the linguistic dimensions of this ecopragmatic research. The data was also analyzed and interpreted by using the identity method to cover the pragmatic dimensions in this research. The research results show that: (1) the emblematic meanings are truly found in several traditional medicinal herbs in some parts of Indonesia; (2) the emblematic meanings of the traditional medicinal herbs are classified based on their shapes, uses, directions of the plant's flower, the smell of the plants, and the origins.

Abstract

This study concerned with language in written form that is visible as graffiti in the Padang city, Indonesia landscape. The mushroomed of graffiti in Padang city landscapes increasingly has been a growing problem in society. Even local government as the official authority has created some task to prohibit graffiti, but a new graffiti has always been emerging in public space. Therefore graffiti has been considered a crime. It is interesting to explore graffiti in Padang city landscapes from other perspectives, particularly the symbolic functions of graffiti. The study uses qualitative approaches by applying Critical Discourse Analysis. The result shows that graffiti in Padang city landscapes accomplished two principal symbolic functions; first graffiti as a medium of demonstration in which providing space for marginalized expression with the opportunity to voice controversial ideas publically; second graffiti as social critics in which providing input into the public discourse that is not concerned by other conventional media.
