Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected multiple aspects of life, particularly the business sector, which has struggled with the challenges posed by decreasing consumer spending. Globally, an economic crisis has occurred in many countries, including Indonesia, which experienced a recession in the third quarter of 2020 with a GDP decline of 3.49%. As the country with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia and a high mortality rate, Indonesia faces major challenges in economic recovery. The government has implemented various measures to support people affected by the pandemic. In this situation, companies must develop adaptive strategies not only to survive but also to seize opportunities to improve their performance, even surpassing pre-pandemic conditions.Purpose: To explain how manufacturing companies in Indonesia invest in R&D to develop their innovation capabilities and financial performance during the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, to prove the differences between the innovation capabilities of Indonesian manufacturing companies before and during the crisis and its effect on financial performance.Design/methodology/approach: The research was conducted on 37 Indonesian manufacturing companies that disclosed expenditures for research and development (R&D) activities. Observational data are financial reports from 2018 to 2021. Data analysis techniques use the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Linear Regression.Findings/Result: The R&D intensity and ROA before and during the crisis did not differ significantly, whereas ROE showed a significant difference. Innovation capabilities show a significant effect on financial performance, both in ROA and ROE.Conclusion: Only 22% of Indonesian manufacturing companies allocate funds for R&D activities. Nevertheless, the Indonesian manufacturing companies under study demonstrated greater efforts to innovate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Investment in R&D increased from an average of 0.67% before the pandemic to 1.06% during the pandemic. The company's financial performance showed a decline during the pandemic.Originality/value (State of the art): This research has the novelty of revealing the development of innovation capabilities of Indonesian manufacturing companies during the COVID-19 pandemic and using a financial approach to prove the influence of innovation capabilities on company financial performance. Keywords: financial performance, innovation capabilities, manufacturing companies, pandemic era; research and development (r&d)

Abstract

Background: MSMEs are vital to Indonesia’s economy through job creation and poverty reduction, yet many remain hesitant to adopt digital technologies. Using Innovation Resistance Theory, this study investigates key functional and psychological barriers ranging from perceived value and usability to tradition and risk hindering OFD adoption. The findings aim to offer insights into overcoming these barriers and supporting the digital transformation of MSMEs.Purpose: This study explores the factors that influence the adoption of Online Food Delivery (OFD) platforms among MSMEs in Indonesia, focusing on both internal and external aspects. The internal factors while the external factors encompass environmental influences. Although geographically centered on Bogor City, the findings offer broader relevance, as the resistance patterns identified reflect systemic challenges faced by MSMEs nationwide. By employing the Innovation Resistance Theory, this study contributes to the design of inclusive digital strategies and supports Indonesia’s broader transition toward a sustainable, innovation-driven economy.Design/methodology/approach: This study employs a quantitative method utilizing linear regression to analyze the influence of various factors on the intention to use Online Food Delivery (OFD) services among Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in Bogor, with a sample of 290 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The analysis results indicate that Competitive Pressure exhibits the highest path coefficient of 0.381, signifying that each unit increase in competitive pressure significantly enhances users' intention to adopt OFD, with a t-value reaching 7.632 (p < 0.01).Findings/Results: The SEM results reveal that competitive pressure (β = 0.38) and perceived trend (β = 0.19) positively influence OFD adoption, while usage barrier (β = -0.29) and value barrier (β = -0.30) are the strongest inhibitors. These findings contribute to the refinement of Innovation Resistance Theory in the context of MSME digital platform adoption. Conclusion: The successful adoption of Online Food Delivery (OFD) platforms among culinary MSEs in Bogor City requires overcoming functional and psychological barriers through targeted strategies that improve user experience and reduce perceived risks. This study not only offers practical insights to facilitate digital transformation and enterprise sustainability but also contributes theoretically by extending Innovation Resistance Theory within the context of digital platform adoption in developing economies.Originality/value: This study enhances the understanding of MSME adoption of OFD by examining internal and external resistance factors through Innovation Resistance Theory (IRT). It analyzes functional barriers (usage, value, risk), psychological barriers (tradition, image), and external factors (competitive pressure, perceived financial cost), providing a basis for future research on technology adoption across various sectors. Keywords: digital transformation, innovation resistance technology, micro and small enterprises, online food delivery, technology adoption

Abstract

Background: The digital transformation of tourism has redefined how familiarity with destinations is constructed, blending experiential encounters with vast informational exposure. Understanding how these distinct sources of familiarity influence cognitive and affective image formation and subsequently visit intention is crucial, particularly for emerging island destinations characterized by limited global recognition and perceived risk factors.Purpose: This study aims to: (1) develop and validate a multidimensional framework distinguishing experiential and informational familiarity, (2) examine the differential impacts of cognitive versus affective destination image components on visit intention, and (3) establish an integrated familiarity–image–intention model tailored to emerging island destinations, with Bangka Belitung, Indonesia, serving as the empirical context.Design/methodology/approach: Employing a rigorous quantitative methodology, we conducted a comprehensive online survey with 544 domestic travelers. Measurement instruments for familiarity and affective image evaluation were carefully designed and adapted from seminal works. The collected data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 3.0. Reliability tests, convergent validity, and discriminant validity assessments were applied to ensure robust psychometric properties.Findings: The results reveal that both experiential and informational familiarity significantly influence cognitive and affective destination images, with affective image exerting a stronger predictive effect on visit intention. A direct positive relationship between familiarity and visit intention was also identified, independent of the mediating role of destination image. These findings support the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model, positioning familiarity as the stimulus, destination image as the organismic response, and visit intention as the behavioral outcome. Conclusion: This research demonstrates that affective destination image serves as a crucial mediator between familiarity and visit intention, particularly for island destinations. The findings provide both a theoretical framework for understanding tourist psychology and actionable insights for destination marketing organizations seeking to enhance visitation through targeted image management strategies.Originality/value: The study contributes by: (1) integrating dual familiarity types with dual image dimensions, (2) providing empirical evidence from understudied island contexts, and (3) resolving theoretical ambiguities concerning the relative importance of image pathways. Keywords: familiarity, destination image, visit intention, Island Tourism, Bangka Belitung

Abstract

Background: The quality of human resources (HR) is a key determinant of organizational success, especially in structured work environments.Purpose: This study endeavored to ascertain the efficacy of performance-based training and compensation as a means of enhancing the quality of the human resources of the company. Design/Methodology/Approach: A quantitative survey was conducted on 60 employees of the Aviation Security Company in Yogyakarta, selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire and analyzed using PLS-SEM. Result: The analysis yielded results that indicated a significant impact of training on employee performance at the Yogyakarta branch of the Aviation Security company. Furthermore, the findings suggest a direct impact of compensation on employee performance within the same context. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate a direct effect of training and compensation on employee performance at the Yogyakarta branch of the Aviation Security company. While HR quality also contributes to performance outcomes, the study did not find sufficient evidence to support its role as a moderating variable. These results suggest that training and compensation remain central components in enhancing employee performance, regardless of variations in HR quality levels.Originality/Value (State of the art): This study introduces an integrated HRM model and reveals that HR quality, while impactful, does not moderate training or compensation effects within structured work systems. Keywords: training, compensation, employee performance, human resources quality, aviation security

Abstract

Background: Green economy and innovation are key drivers of sustainable development; however, their effectiveness depends on the regulatory quality that governs their implementation. In Indonesia, regulatory challenges often hinder efforts to promote a green economy and innovation, raising concerns about their direct and mediated impact on sustainable development.Purpose: To examine how the green economy and innovation affect sustainable development in Indonesia, using regulatory quality as a mediating variable.Design/methodology/approach: This study used a quantitative technique with annual time-series data from 2011 to 2020. The variables analyzed included Green Economy (X1), innovation (X2), Regulatory Quality (Z), and Sustainable Development (Y). Data analysis was performed using OLS regression, starting with classical assumption tests followed by hypothesis testing. The data were processed using EViews-12.Findings/Result: The findings prove that the green economy does not significantly impact regulatory quality, while innovation negatively impacts it. However, a green economy directly enhances sustainable development, whereas innovation does not. Regulatory quality significantly influences sustainable development and mediates the effects of both the green economy and innovation. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of regulatory quality in enhancing green economic policies and mitigating the negative effects of innovation. Strengthening regulatory frameworks is necessary to optimize the benefits of green economic endeavors and foster sustainable innovation. Originality/value (State of the art): This research adds value by highlighting the mediating role of regulatory quality, offering a more comprehensive perspective on sustainability governance in Indonesia.
