Abstract

This study investigated gender differences in extramarital behaviors in long-distance marriages, with a focus on the role of digital platforms in facilitating infidelity and the impact on marital commitment and satisfaction. The rationale for the study stems from the increasing prevalence of long-distance marriages in the digital age, where technology serves as both a means of maintaining connection and a potential risk factor for infidelity. A sample of 300 participants (150 men, 150 women) in long-distance marriages was recruited. Participants completed the Extramarital Behavior Scale (EBS), the Digital Communication and Infidelity Scale (DCIS), and the Marital Commitment and Satisfaction Scale (MCSS). Results showed that men reported higher levels of physical extramarital behaviors (mean = 3.2), while women exhibited more emotional extramarital behaviors (mean = 3.8). The use of digital platforms was strongly correlated with both physical (r = .55, p < .01) and emotional extramarital behaviors (r = .50, p < .01). Lower marital commitment (B = -.30, p = .002) and satisfaction (B = -.25, p = .038) were significant predictors of increased extramarital behaviors. In conclusion, digital platforms play a critical role in infidelity among long-distance couples, with notable gender differences in behavior patterns.

Abstract

The level of parent-adolescent conflicts increases after children attain puberty, facilitated by hormonal changes and cognitive development, which are believed to contribute to adolescents developing a sense of emotional autonomy from parents. These changes often lead to parent-adolescent conflicts, facilitating more mature and equal relationships between both parties. Parenting styles in responding to adolescents’ growing need for independence also influence the conflicts. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of adolescents’ emotional autonomy and parenting styles on the level of conflicts. To achieve this objective, a quantitative study was conducted on 386 Junior and Senior High School students from X Foundation, Denpasar. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that both emotional autonomy and parenting styles significantly impacted parent-adolescent conflicts. The contribution of these variables was more pronounced for mothers (50%) than fathers (43%). Both authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles were found to influence conflicts. Therefore, reducing parent-adolescent conflicts required considering adolescents’ emotional autonomy and fostering authoritative parenting styles.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impact of humour types on positive emotions of Generation Z social media users on Twitter. An experimental method was adopted, with a one-shot case study design under a pre-experimental framework. The participants were 211 individuals divided into 4 groups of different types of humour, namely sarcasm text, entertainment text, sarcasm meme, and entertainment meme. The post hoc test results showed that different types of humour had varying effects on enhancing positive emotions among Generation Z users on Twitter. Sarcasm text had the most significant impact, achieving the highest average value of 68.77, while entertainment meme featured the least influence, with the lowest average value of 59.66. The ANOVA test further confirmed these variations, with an F-test significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05).

Abstract

This research aimed to investigates construct validity of Schadenfreude measurement instrument adapted for the Indonesian context. Schadenfreude, which is the feeling of satisfaction at another individual's misfortune, is explored through five dimensions, namely concern for justice, aggression, competition, arrogance, and envy. These dimensions guided the development of a 60-item instrument based on scale by Crysel and Webster (2018). Data were collected from 500 respondents in Pagutan Village, Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia, reflecting the social, cultural, and economic context. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and measurement invariance using M-plus were conducted to test construct validity. The result showed that 10 items were invalid, leaving a refined instrument of 50 valid items across the dimensions. This validated instrument provided a robust tool to measure Schadenfreude in Indonesian populations aged > 12, with applications in social, political, economic, and competitive contexts. In conclusion, the research showed the cultural relevance of Schadenfreude in understanding human emotions and social behavior.

Abstract

Academic achievement reflects the level of success students achieve in college studies. Based on observation, a prominent factor that typically influence this metric is family roles, particularly through the mediation of noble character. Therefore, this research aims to examine the mediating role of noble character on the relationship between family roles and student academic achievement. In order to achieve the stated objective, 201 college students were selected using cluster stratified random sampling, which served as the sample in this explanatory quantitative research. Accordingly, three key variables observed during the course of the exploration include family function, noble character scales, and student cumulative achievement index. A mediation test was also carried out using Jamovi statistical software 2.0.0 to determine the relationship between the key variables. The obtained results from the test showed that family function did not directly influence educational achievement. Instead, it only determined academic achievement through the instillation of noble character in students. Based on this result, an inference was made that noble character significantly mediated the relationship between family function and academic achievement.

Abstract

Ten to fifteen percent of mothers worldwide are studied to develop postpartum depression (PPD) following birth. Although studies suggest significant cases among Indonesian mothers in particular, the prevalence remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate support needs of mothers and identify the factors that facilitated or hindered social support. A qualitative study was conducted using in-depth interviews, both online and face-to-face. Furthermore, 13 first-time Indonesian mothers who had given birth in the country and were above 18 years old were selected through purposive sampling. The results suggested that facilitating social support actions included validating feelings, sharing responsibilities, assisting with domestic tasks, providing appropriate advice, and exchanging feelings, knowledge, as well as experiences. Hindering factors included partner ignorance, lack of empathy, promotion of irrelevant traditional beliefs, criticism and comparisons, excessive support, and an exclusive focus on the baby. Future studies were further recommended to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the experiences of first-time Indonesian mothers.

Abstract

Academic buoyancy is the capability to handle and effectively manage daily difficulties and challenges. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the role of positive youth development in mediating the relationship between intentional self-regulation, schools climate, and academic buoyancy. A quantitative method with a cross-sectional design was used, the respondents were 875 students from Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) in Tasikmalaya City, and path analysis was conducted with Mplus 8.4 software. The results showed that positive youth development mediated the relationship between intentional self-reguation, schools climate, and academic buoyancy. Furthermore, the study recommended that schools need to provide programs to facilitate positive youth development. This can be achieved through the development of positive climate and improvement of students' intentional self-reguation ability.

Abstract

Resilience is necessary for the prisoners who are subjected to legal sanctions in accordance with criminal cases committed. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the resilience of the prisoners living in a prison regarding social support and husnuzan. A quantitative correlational method was used to explore the relationship between social support, husnuzan, and resilience. The participants were Muslim male prisoners, aged 18 to 60 years, incarcerated for the first time at Correctional Institution “X” in Yogyakarta. A total of 206 participants were obtained using a purposive sampling method and data were collected through three psychological scales, namely resilience, social support, and husnuzan. The result showed that there was a positive relationship between social support & husnuzan and the resilience of the prisoners. This implies that the prisoners have high resilience when there is a positive thought about the future, as well as receive love and support from family and friends.

Abstract

Previous studies on gender differences in mental health has reported significantly different results. Inconclusive results have also been obtained from existing literature focused on differences in psychological well-being in organizations and industries between women and men. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of gender differences on psychological well-being of state Islamic religious universities lecturers. The study procedures were carried out with a quantitative method, focusing on 652 lecturers from Indonesian state Islamic universities. The selected respondents were assessed with the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale and the Bem Sex Role Inventory. The data obtained were then analyzed using MANOVA to determine differences between 2 gender groups, namely male and female. The results showed that there were significant gender differences in psychological well-being between male and female lecturers at state Islamic religious universities. In terms of autonomy and self-acceptance, men outscored women, while in terms of personal growth and positive relationships with others, women had higher scores. In addition, high masculinity was the most significant factor in both men's and women's psychological well-being.
