Abstract

Activity of hadith external criticism (sanad) and also internal criticism (matn) is the obligation of the observers in order to put its existence together with the Koran as the base of religious argumentation. The process of criticism should be done, knowing that there is no guareantee of hadith which are up to the Muslims society categorized of accepted hadith. In addition to a wide variety of methods to criticize sanad, there are also various offers for hadith editorial criticizing. One of them is the science of mukhtalaf al-hadîth. The existence of this knowledge arises when doing data documentation (takhrîj hadîth) in the shade of the same-similar meaning. It will not be separated from the findings of controversial-looking hadith, and therefore the existence of such controversy should be sought in order to offer solutions with a strong suspect and also sort out the existing data to be placed in the proper position. Thus, this paper focuses on any viable solutions when dealing directly with the hadiths suspected controversial

Abstract

Peripheral areas such as Indonesia are in necessity to have more understanding of hadith content (matn) than on knowledge of hadith in its complexity. The long distance of knowledge dissemination, development and codification of hadith period in Indonesia, than in the Arabian Peninsula, caused many scholars to prioritize hadith studies in its understandable form, which is more practical, than in its theoretical one. Based on the study of hadith of maulid nabi (prophet?s birthday) in Indonesia, it strongly suggests that understanding and practicing hadith are more important than studying of hadith knowledge. Popular hadith of maulid consists of several hadiths and several comments (sharh}). Those hadiths are then compiled and summarized to be one simple sentence. This sentence is then considered as hadith, and people could be easily understand and memorize it. The same method is also applied in the writing and teaching of hadith books. This compilation and summary seem to be an inverted proof of isnâd-cum-matn, which argues that the transmission of hadith is an ongoing process of oral words along the times.

Abstract

This paper examines the origins of ziyâdat al-thiqqah and its institutionalization in hadith studies. The term of ziyâdat al-thiqqah was firstly initiated by al-Bukhârî in the middle age of the third century of Hijrah. At first, ziyâdat al-thiqqah was used to mean as adding sanad (chain of hadith narrators). But later, the term was also used in terms of matn (main text of hadith), which begins to be institutionalized in the 7th century of Hijriah. The goal of al-Bukhârî in setting up the term is to assert that the narrator should only receive the additional thiqqah narrators. This could also be a strategy of anticipation to minimize a counterfeiting of Prophet?s traditions. With the existence of ziyâdat al-thiqqah, it certainly brings influences on the narration of Hadith. This study finds that there are three implications of ziyâdat al-thiqqah in Hadith studies: the reconstruction of the theory of maqbûl, the acceptance of ziyâdat al-thiqqah as a form of variation, and the confirmation of the existence of al-isnâd al-?âlî and al-isnâd al-nâzil.

Abstract

This paper aims to provide new meanings on jihad in the ?adîth. From many explanations of jihad, it is rarely found the study of jihad in the perspective of explanatory books of ?adîth (shar?), which is actually the interpretation of the main Hadith books. This study employs the books of shar? in comparative framework, that is to compare the meanings of jihad presented in the book of Fat? al-Barî and Irshâd al-Sârî, which are considered as the most representative book to explain S{a?î? al-Bukhârî. Based on reading those two books, it was found that jihad is not similar with war, and also does not only mean to fight unbelievers. Besides, it also means to fight against demons and lust in every single Muslim soul. The last meaning argues the incompatibility understanding of jihad as a war, as it is common in social perception. By tracking the socio-historical side, it is explained in both books that the law of jihad are far? ?ayn or far? kifâyah, which is based on the contextual situation.

Abstract

It is a common agreement that Muslims in Indonesia accept nation state as a system which is not based solely on religion, but religion, at the same time, could be the main pillar and source of value in its principal. This paper is aimed at putting Indonesian Qur?anic exegesis into consideration, Hamka?s Tafsir al-Azhar and M. Quraish Shihab?s Tafsir al-Mishbah, related to the issue of state power and government. It attempts to delve into the values constructed by both exegetes on the Qur?anic verses related to the principles of the power and how those values are applied in the nation state formation. The results of the study suggests that some of Qur?anic values composed by both exegetes is: realization of nation state in a well-organized bureaucratic system, that is manifested in a good leadership, which is based on high competency selected based on democratic system selection (mushawarah). These values are able to be exemplified by both exegetes in nation-state frames with reference to cooperative and critical attitude towards the government.

Abstract

Culture has a significant influence on the interpretation of the Qur?an. The influence has somehow integrated into the process of interpretation, which often colors the patterns of it. One of the Qur?anic exegeses which identity lies in Javanese culture is tafsir Al-Ibri?z. Besides a vernacular attempt, which signifies its main characteristic of interpretation, the color of Javanese culture is also an interesting topic to study. It is because the content of Javanese culture has been inherent in every single verse explained in various forms and ways. This study argues that Al-Ibri?z accommodates the values of Javanese culture as a mode of interpretation of the Qur?an. Those values lay in the basic principles of harmony and respect, which are part of the local Javanese ethics, the value of the concept of kerajawian (tradition applied in Jawa) about kawula pangeran (relationship between human and god) relation, and the imaginative-projective nature of Javanese thought.

Abstract

The Prophet tradition, which explains on how to purify a vessel licked by a dog, has a different editorial (text) and substance (content). This difference gives the impression that the Prophet is showing inconsistencies in giving teaching to his companions, which results in confusion for the next generation in understanding the hadith. To examine the truth of the hadith, the researcher aims at locating two standard methods in the study of the hadith that are to examines the chains (sanad) and content (matn). By these two methods, the validity of the hadith can be considered for its authenticity. Besides, scientific evidence by examining the saliva content of dogs could be an alternative way to prove the truth of the h}adi>th. It argues that the truth of the various hadith is in line with that of scientific research. The saliva of a pet can be cleaned by seven times of water rinse. While seven rinses of water can clean the saliva of wild dogs, and one of them should be mixed with soil.

Abstract

The article aims at describing the tendency of wearing a veil in Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar District, which has recently increased significantly. It employs living hadith as a concept with a qualitative method that seeks to explore hadiths that living in Muslim societies, how they are applied and made into traditions in daily life. The article argues that the use of the veil was more based on self-protection than on theological motivation. However, they still held that wearing veil is a sunna. This circumcision is then understood in a totalistic ideal typology, which leads to the implementation of Sunna in a higher level of application. Besides, women who wear a veil feel more filled with religious nuance, which manifests in the attitude of ?iffah (self-care), islah} (improvement of knowledge and behavior) and ?izzah (feeling noble). Also, the religiosity of a veiled female affects in two aspects: socio-morality and psychological aspect.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the ethics of public communication in a digital age, based on the hadith perspective. It is based on the poor ethics of communication in society, which leads to the emerge of SARA, hoaxes, and politicization of religion. The article addresses prophetic traditions concerning ruwaybid}ah that could provide values ??on the norms of communication. Based on the lexical meaning, the word ruwaybid}ah means people who are weak towards noble matters. Muhammad?s description through the editorial ?fools who meddled in community affairs? has a close relation to the cause of social inequality at that time. Through a socio-historical approach, it argues that anyone who does not have capabilities in a particular field and tries to impose his or her incapacity, they could belong to the ruwaybid}ah category. Further, this study attempts to formulate key important principles of today?s digital age communication based on the hadith.
