Abstract

This paper discusses the Ecumenical Protestant-Christian theology toward other religion which is strongly influenced by the context. Sidjabat has slightly concerned about the problem of religious pluralism since inter-religious relation in his time were still relatively respectable. Victor I. Tanja paid more attention to interfaith dialogue because the Indonesian Government has been promoting a lot of interfaith dialogue and activism. Tanja is an arm of the government, in contrast to Sumartana, a theologian associated with an upsetting period where several riots, such as conflict between Christian and Muslim, raised in Surabaya, Situbondo, Tasikmalaya, Ambon and Poso. He thinks it is needed to apply on what so-called theologia religionum, theology of religions.

Abstract

Applying the concept of religious teaching, Muslim Waktu Lima in Lombok follows universal Islamic standard and reason as the main factor in determining attitude and behavior. However, Islam Waktu Lima does not maintain the concept of Islam Wetu Telu in a little way, such as the idea of ketemuk, membangar, nyunatang, ngurisang, mituk, nyiwak, bejango, dodotan, and sapuan. The practice of Islam Wetu Telu in the midst of Islam Waktu Lima tradition has been cultivated by several foundations. First, although the concept of Islam Wetu Telu differs from Islam Waktu Lima it represents a vehicle to maintain shared traditions between them. Second, in the process of transforming symbolic meaning within the practice of Islam Wetu Telu dan Islam Waktu Lima, there has been a common teaching performed based on rational logic, such as mituk, nyiwaan, and membangar. Third, the teaching of Islam Wetu Telu practiced by the adherents of Islam Waktu Lima was theologically based on the doctrines of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, like the tradition of ngurisang, and nyunatang. Fourth, the perfection of the concept of teaching received from their teachers and clerics is not yet complete. This paper aims to explain how Islam Waktu Lima accomodates Islam Wetu Telu teaching and concept within their everyday life.

Abstract

The Salafi (Wahabi) movement in Indonesia in recent decades is growing rapidly. Generally, the group is often considered as part of takf?riy, radical or terrorist group considering its similarity in rejecting the heresy (bidah) practices and its view on democracy. This research attempts to explore how its religious teaching and strategies as well as its compatibility to deradicalization efforts. The research uses Hertbert Blumer's theory which classifies the development of a movement in four stages; social chaos, popular excitement, formalization and institutionalization. This research found that their Islamic teaching merely refers to the model of Islam practiced by three early generations. Meanwhile, the strategy undertaken is focused on teaching tauhid through education that has been purified (ta?fiyah) and tarbiyah. Compatibility to deradicalization of this group lies on the evidence that Salafi is different with takf?riy, radical or terrorist group. Moreover, they believe that Pancasila is not against Islam.

Abstract

Along with scientific development and technological growth which have created a lot of convenience to mankind there have also raised a deep cynicism towards the religious and spiritual aspects of life. Value crisis of humanity marked by the crisis of spirituality increased. Many societies are facing deep crisis. This condition makes the world vulnerable to violence and conflicts. Therefore, modern world society has been challenged to to be more attentive than before to deal with religious and spiritual values. This paper asserts that religion continues to be an important since it combines both personal and public character. Social problems faced by the modern world society such as cultural diversity, environmental preservation, economic equity, and conflict resolution are theologically reflected within the teaching of Islam. Sufism as a form of Islamic spiritualities offers some applicable answers for this phenomenon. In addition, characteristic of Sufism (mysticism) is commonly well known in almost all religions. Sufism cherishes from the private sphere into a popular Islamic culture. This research would like to see how the phenomenon of spiritual movement in the dimension of Sufism has a real powerful to improve social problem of the modern world.

Abstract

This research aimed to understanding the concept of divinity in Arabic culture through lexemes which mean God used in the Qur’an dan Arabic Gospel. Lexeme is a smallest unit of meaning that formes a word. From the lexem, words, phrases, clauses, and discourses are formed according to Arabic’s concept of divinity. This research uses a semantic approach, through discussion on form and meaning, Brown-Yule’ s idea of text and co-text, and Sapir-Whorf hypothesis on culture and language. This research found that the lexeme of Allah (God) has been known by Arabic people before the birth of Islam and Christian. This lexeme means the name of the highest God in Arabic polytheism and was estimated to be used from the fifth century BC. Arabic Christians used this lexeme as the translation of “God” and referred to “The Only One God” about 500 years before Muhammad’s birth. The lexemes of God in the Quran could be named as Allah, Rabb, Ilah, dhmir (ana, anta, huwa, and nahnu), and the names of Allah (sifat-Allah wa asma-Allah), while the lexemes of God in Arabic Gospels are Allah, Rabb, Ilah, ab (father), Yasu’ (Jesus), al-Ruh al-Quds (Holy Spirit), al-Ibn (Son), as-Sayyid (Lord), al-Mu’allim (Master), al-Malik (King), and dhamir (ana, anta, and huwa). The lexeme of Allah, Rabb, and Ilah are found in both the Qur’an and Arabic Gospel, but these lexemes have some differences in word category, sintaxis function, and semantic role. Furthermore, another lexeme are used with same purpose, such as presenting a more complete and more familiar picture of God.

Abstract

Religious view toward other different groups often lead to conflicts. The ability of a religious person to view differences as a gift shows a high level of religious awareness. However, religious diversity often becomes a challenge when it deals with economic and political interests. Through phenomenological approach, this study aims to see the construction of the inclusive value of religious leaders in Kediri. This research found that the construction of inclusive values has been shaped by three main factors: (1) social culture which improves values ?and norms encouraging individual behaviour and attitudes; (2) historical factors, and (3) religious experience, namely a practice and behavior of the religious leaders.

Abstract

The history of the mythology of Using Tribe in Banyuwangi has been rooted within the ancestral beliefs of Hinduism and Buddhism. Using Tribe used to do a pilgrimage (ziarah) to what so called Petilasan Buyut Cili which is believed as ground-breaker of the construction of Using. This research aims to describe history of Petilasan Buyut Cili, cultural changes of the ancestral faith, and transcendental habituation. Using phenomenological approach, this research attempts to elucidate that social belief could create a basically well-balanced connection between human and God. This research found that (1) the growth of the belief of Using Tribe has been influenced by Department of Tourism which established Kemiren Village as a traditional and cultural village; (2) urbanization changes religious patterns of Using Tribe; and (3) the tribe has been transformed to be a religious-based tourist destination. The tribe practiced annual religious rites which are conserved simultaneously to become a transcendental habituation for the people of Desa Kemiren.

Abstract

Surabaya is a multicultural city which consists of different communities, religions, and ethnics. However, the city has persisted to build harmonious relation between peoples. Based on Muslim-mayority population, the city attempts to cultivate inter-religious solidarity and understanding among the people. Known that political, economic, and religious matters could influence people’s behaviour, this research aims to see how the Muslim youth in the city understand and implement the social patterns of inter-religious relation. Using questionnaire method, the research found that 12.2% of the Muslim youth in Surabaya were very tolerant, 26.1% were tolerant, 28.9% were quite tolerant, 19.7% were intolerant, and 13.1% were very intolerant. This research also found that there are several factors influencing perceptions of Muslim youth in Surabaya for maintaining inter-religious tolerance, such as religion, politics, and social media.

Abstract

This article discusses some efforts performed by an inter-religious movement called Basolia and its contribution to the harmony of religious life in Bogor. This study aims to explain strategies and tactics carried out by the activists of Basolia, to analyse factors supporting or blocking the religious dialogue movement of Basolia, and to know the contribution of Basolia for making religious harmony in Bogor. This research found that Basolia provides for making harmony in Bogor through social activities initiated by interfaith figures, lay people, and organizations. The involvement of religious figures, lay people, and organization has strengthened social ties between peoples and communities in Bogor, which is remarkable for making harmony.

Abstract

Media infiltration in the Indonesian Muslim community has made the existence of religious authority increasingly fragmented. This fragmentation eventually gave birth to some serious consequences: loss of control to religious symbols, overlapping truth claims and relativization of religious authority. Several recent cases, starting from the mushrooming of Muslim celeb-clerics, cases of criminalization of ulama, bullying the figures of senior ulama on social media, to the politicization of ulama identities in elections, are clear tokens of the consequences. The question is how to manage those consequences of the fragmentation of religious authority? This paper discusses the problem based on a comparative analysis of the data collected during fieldwork in Malaysia and Singapore in 2018. The data was collected by interviewing imams, asatizah, and university professors in both countries as well as Indonesian professors and the grand imam of the Istiqlal Mosque as the complementary. Using the mediatization theory as its theoretical basis, this research found that there are several important arguments to deal with the consequences. As a concluding remark, this paper proposes a formula of maq??id -based media ethics as an alternative point of view of an ethical construction of Muslim society’s interaction with media.
