Abstract

Lyrics in song are intended to send a message to the audience or music lovers.  Composers use figurative language as the media to convey their message. One of the figurative languages that is mostly used in song’s lyrics is Metaphor. This study was intended to investigate the types of metaphor used in One Direction Album. The objective of this study to identify the types of metaphor found in the song lyrics and to analyze metaphor meaning in One Direction song. This study adopted a descriptive qualitative research design. Three songs by One Direction had been chosen as the data of this study; Story of My Life, Steal My Girl and Drag Me Down. The data were analyzed its metaphor by using Lakoff and Johnson theory, while in investigating the meaning, Chaer’s theory of contextual meaning was used. The result of the study showed that based on the three types of metaphor, structural metaphor becomes the most frequently used in the song lyrics, meanwhile 2 of 3 songs used all of the three types of metaphor; Orientation, Structural and Ontological Metaphor. In answering the second research question about the meaning of each metaphor, each lyric has been analyzed through content analysis to know the true meaning of what the song writer want to express in his/her lyrics and each lyric has different contextual meaning which is elaborated further in this study. Keywords: Metaphor, Meaning, One Direction’s Album

Abstract

The objective of the study is to know whether or not three phase technique   has   significant   effect   on   students’ reading comprehension. The design of this study was quasi experimental research. The population of the study were students who were taking Reading 1 class in English study program at Halu Oleo University in academic year of  2016-2017.  By  employing  purposive  sampling technique the researcher chose class A as the sample of this study. Instrument of study was reading comprehension test in form of multiple choices questions. The result of this study confirmed that the teaching reading  by  using  three  phase  reading  technique  could give significant effect on the students’ reading comprehension. Based on the Paired Sample Test, it was found that there was a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension score before and after they were given treatment by using three phase reading technique procedure in Reading 1 class with the significant degree of 0.013. Furthermore, there was also significant improvement in students' mean score (79.78). Therefore, the proposed hypothesis which stated “three phase reading technique has significant effect on students’ reading comprehension” was accepted. Keywords: Three Phase Technique, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has been discussed for a long time around the world in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). Teaching English based on students’ needs is  important,  particularly  for  those  learners  who  learn English beyond the academic purposes such as vocational high school students. The objective of this study is to analyse nursing   students’   needs   for   ESP   materials   at   SMKS Kesehatan Kendari based on Target Situation Analysis. Therefore, this study is conducted to identify the Target Situation Analysis (TSA) of one of vocational high school in Kendari.  This study employed  research  and  development design with 22 samples. The data obtained from questionnaire were analysed statistically by using SPSS version 16.0. The result shows that students need in learning English process for the tasks of speaking skill; how to ask question English well, how to answer question English well, do  communication  with  schoolmates,  do  communication with   teachers,   and   do   communication   with   patients. Listening skill; listening and understanding when do face to face conversations, listening and understanding through conversation on the phone, listening and understanding the content of forum discussions, and listening and understanding the content of announcements. Reading skill; how to read health magazine, how to read announcement, and how to read patient list, and Writing skill; how to fill the patients form and how to write medical report. Abstract

This study investigated the effect of using folktales on students’ listening achievement at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kendari. This study applied a Pre-experimental research design with one group pretest and posttest. The population   of   this   research   was   the   eleventh-   grade students of senior high school in the academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was all eleventh-grade students of MAN I Kendari which consists of 30 students. The  Technique  of sampling  used  by  the  researcher  was total sampling. The result showed there was a significant effect of using folktales on students’ listening achievement. It  was  proven  based  on  descriptive  analysis,  the  mean score of pretest was 48.4 and the posttest means score was 75.2.  Moreover,  the  result  of  hypothesis  testing  showed that the mean value of pretest and posttest was 26.7 and the standard deviation was 20.7, while the standard error means was 3.78. The sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 which smaller than (<0.05), it can be concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted which means there was an effect of using Folktales in teaching Listening at Eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kendari. Keywords: listening, folktales

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether there is a significant effect of applying audio-visual method on students’ Speaking achievement of second grade students at SMPN 2 Kendari or not. Population of this research is the entire second grade class in academic year 2017/2018 of SMPN 2 Kendari. The total numbers of the population are 280 students where class VIII B as experimental class  and VIII A as control class were chosen as the sample of this study used purposive sampling technique. This study applied quasi-experimental design which concerned on two groups; they are control group and experimental group. These two groups received a different treatment. The implementation of audio-visual method was applied on experimental class. The data which analyzed in this study was quantitative data; it gained from the pretest and posttest result of the two classes which analyzed using descriptive statistic and inferential analysis (Independent sample t-test). The result shows that the gain of the mean score of experimental class 1.76 is higher than the gain score of control class 0.57. It shows that teaching speaking by Audiovisual method in the experimental class has a better effect in enhancing students’ speaking achievement. Then the result of hypothesis testing showed that the value of  Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.044 which smaller than (<0.05). Hence, it can be concluded that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted which means that there is significant effect of Audiovisual method on students’ speaking achievement at eight grade of SMP N 2 Kendari. Keywords: Speaking, Audiovisual, Learning method

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using card game on students’ speaking achievement at MA Karae. It was conducted in the pre-experimental research design. The population of this research was the students of class X IPA MA Karae which consists of two classes with 53 students, while the subject of this research is the class X science program consisting of 28 students. The research data were collected by giving pretest and post-test to students in the form of oral tests related to the topic of personal introductory expressions, intentions and favorite places. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0 using (descriptive analysis and inferencial statistic). Meanwhile, to test the hypothesis, the researcher used a t-test (paired sample t-test) which was calculated through SPSS 16.0. The result shows that there is a significant effect of card playing technique on students' speaking achievement in the first year MA Karae students. It also shows that the use of this technique can improve the accuracy and fluency of students' speaking. It can be seen from the average post-test score is 53.21, while the average score of the pre-test is 29.28. To prove the hypothesis, the researcher concludes by comparing the Sig (2 tailed) value with the significance value α. This shows that the Sig (2 tailed) value was 0,000 while the significance value α is 0.05. So, it can be concluded that the Sig (2 tailed) value is lower than the significance value α (0,000 <0.05). In other words, (H1) is accepted. It means that there is a significant influence of the card game technique on students 'speaking ability in the first year of the MA Karae.

Abstract

This research is conducted to describe whether or not Word Wall Strategy has a significant effect on students’ English tenses mastery at grade VIII of Junior High School 1 Kendari. It focused on two tenses, namely simple present tense and simple past tense. The population of this research was grade VIII students of Junior High School 1 Kendari consisting of ten classes, while the subject of this research was class VIII6 which consisted of 34 students. This research was conducted in pre-experimental research design. The data of this research were collected by giving pre-test and post-test to students. They were calculated through SPSS 16.00 version and analyzed by using descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. As for testing the hypothesis, the researcher uses paired sample t-test.The result showed that there was an improvement of the students’ English tenses mastery. It can be seen on the mean score of post-test which was 69.55, while the mean score of pre-test was 32.88. In order to prove the hypothesis, the researcher took the conclusion by comparing between the value of Sig (2 tailed) with the significance α value. It showed that the value of Sig (2 tailed) was 0.000 while the significance α value was 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the value of Sig (2 tailed) was lower than the significance α value (0.000 < 0.05). It means that there was a significant effect of Word Wall Strategy on students’ English tenses mastery at grade VIII of Junior High School 1 Kendari.

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out whether there is a significant effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model on students’ speaking achievement at class XI of SMAN 10 Kendari. The design of this research was pre-experimental research (one group pre-test and post-test design). The population involved the XI-graders science program (X1 MIA) of SMAN 10 Kendari which consisted of four classes, while the sample taken by using simple random sampling technique was students at class X1 MIA 4 consisting of 21 students. The instrument was an oral test about asking and giving opinion related to the topic. The researcher used Paired Sample T-test through SPSS 16.0 version to analyze the result of the research. The result showed that the mean score of students’ speaking achievement in posttest was higher than that of in pre-test (55.47 > 37.14). The hypothesis testing found that the value of sig (2 Tailed) was 0.00 while the significant alpha value was 0.05. It can be concluded that the value of Sig (2 Tailed) was lower than the significant alpha value (0.00 < 0.05). It means that the use of Problem Based Learning model has a significant effect on students’ speaking achievement at the XI grade of SMAN 10 Kendari.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine The Effect of Lyric Training Website on Students’ Listening Achievement at SMAN 1 Batauga. This research conducted using quasiexperimental research design. The sample are 26 students of XII MIA 1 which is assigned as experimental group and 26 students of XII MIA 2 which is assigned as control group. The research used simple random sampling design for taking the sample. The data of this research is collected by giving the students pre-test and post-test in the form of listening test. Then, the data is analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 using descriptive analyzed and inferential statistic. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental group is higher than the control group. In the experimental group the mean score of pre-test is 31.28 (Low) and the mean score of post-test is 60.25 (Moderate). In comparison, in the control group the mean score of pre-test is 33.07 (Low) and the mean score of post-test is 36.92 (low). The result of the independent sample t-test indicated that the value of sig. (2 tailed) is lower than the significance α value (0.000 < 0.05). In other words, H1 is accepted and it means that there is a significant effect of Lyric Training Website on Students’ Listening Achievement. Furthermore, the result of the finding also showed that Lyric Training can improve several things such as motivation and listening.

Abstract

Content analysis of the textbook has an important role because the analysis result can be used to determine whether the teacher can use the content of the textbook, or it needs to be revised. This research was conducted to analyze the content of English textbook based on five criteria proposed by Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan (BSNP). This research used qualitative with descriptive method. The data were collected from an English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris published by Penerbit Yrama Widya for Senior High School. The instrument of this research was a table checklist from BSNP. The researcher used the English textbook that has been applied in SMAN 1 Kapoiala as data sources. In collecting and analyzing the data, the researcher used a table checklist to find out the result of this research. Then, the researcher described the result of the table checklist regarding the completeness, in-depth, social function, element and structure of meaning, and linguistic features criteria. The result of this research showed that from nine chapters of this textbook, five chapters did not successfully fulfill five criteria from BSNP and four of them had successfully fulfilled. This research can be useful for teachers to gain information about the suitability of the content of the textbook following BSNP standard. It is also useful for the authors of the English textbook to improve the quality of the content of the textbook.
