Abstract

Paraphrasing is one of the major skill for academic writing and some have considered that the teaching of paraphrasing can help students avoid copying from source texts. The objective of this research was to find out the problems faced in paraphrasing the text and how to deal with the problems. Quantitative design was used in this study to answer the research questions. There were 10 participants as the subject in this study. The data were collected from paraphrasing text, questionnaire, and interview. The finding of the data analysis shows that lack of vocabulary and lack of grammar knowledge are the problems faced by most of the participants in paraphrasing the text. From the text, it was found that just 17% of students were able to change the word or synonym from the original text and 17 % students were able to change grammar or structure from original text. From the questionnaires, the means score shows that the students have most problems in grammar and lack of vocabulary in paraphrasing the text in which the highest means score fall into the question 17 and 19 with score 3. From the interview, it was also found that most students mentioned lack of vocabulary and grammar as the problems in paraphrasing the text. Furthermore, practicing more, reading more the original text, reading the dictionary and learning more from the internet are the solutions to deal with the problems in paraphrasing the text.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the students’ and teachers’ perception towards the use of Edmodo in learning and teaching English process at SMA N 6 Kendari. The subjects of the study are the students in class XII. IPA1. This study used descriptive design. The researcher gathered the data through the questionnaire and interview. The data of students’ perception were collected by using close-ended questionnaire. The closed- ended questionnaire was analyzed with descriptive statistic by using SPSS16.0 version. The results showed that majority of students are having a positive response toward Edmodo. The result shows that 77.10% student are having positive respond, 14.40% students state neutral and only 8.50% students state negative. While, the result of interview showed that Edmodo helps the teacher to put on teach, to interact with the students, to monitor students’ activities groups and conduct evaluation. The recommendation of the research consists of two; the first is to the teachers, the teachers should use Edmodo in learning teaching English process as a media tools in learning and teaching English because it can improve the students' knowledge, motivation. In addition, it can make easy for teacher and students in learning and teaching English. The last is to the next researchers, the next researchers are suggested to do similar research in different way such as; the next researcher should try to search the effect of using Edmodo in teaching English. It would see whether the use of Edmodo can give significant effect.

Abstract

The problem of vocabulary learning for the students is their ability in using words is not quite right. Another problem is the students’ acquisition of the meaning of a word still less. That is why the vocabulary mastery is needed for the students to improve their vocabulary ability. While when teacher teach vocabulary there is not enough media that they can use. Because of that reason, the purpose of this research was to know whether the use of Lyricstraining.com improve students’ vocabulary mastery at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University as the media for vocabulary learning.  The subject of this research were 20 students of English education Department of Halu Oleo University who were taking vocabulary class. The method that used on this research was pre experimental with one group pre and post test. The instrument of this research was vocabulary test includes multiple choices and matching words questions. The result of this research showed the improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery after the treatment. This result proved by the incerase of students’ mean score. The mean of students score before the using of Lyricstraining.com  was 73.6. According to the level, it was categorized as good level. After the using of Lyricstraining.com, the mean score of the students was 82.6 and categorized as very good. It means that the mean score of the students on the pre-test and post-test was increased. Furtherrmore based on the finding, H1 was accepted  because  of the  Sig (2 tailed) was 0.000 which was lower than the alpha value α (0.05) or sig (2 tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. In other words the result showed the using of  Lyricstraining.com improve students’ vocabulary mastery at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the quality of English summative test at grade eleven of Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Bina Cendekia Tampo. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. In analyzing the data, the researcher used quantitative analysisusing the SPSS 25.0 program and Microsoft Excel to operate data in terms of item validity, the level of difficulty, discrimination power,item of distractors and reliability of the test. The result of the research shows that : (1) In term of validity, there are 12 items (30%) considered valid and 28 items (70%) are considered invalid; (2) In term of level of difficulty, there are 15 items of the test (37,5%) categorized as too difficult, 13 items of the test (32,5%) are categorized as moderate and 12 items (30%) are categorized as too easy; (3) In term of discrimination power, there are 3 items (7,5%) categorized as excellent, 10 items (25%) are categorized as good, 8 items (20%) are categorized as satisfactory, 17 items (42,5%) are categorized as poor and 2 items (5%) are categorized as very poor; (4) In term of item of distractor, there are 27 items (67,5%) categorized as effective and 13 items (32,5%) are categorized ineffective; (5) In term of reliability aspect, the test has high reliability with r11 of the test is 0,775; (6) Based on the overall analysis, there are 3 items of the test categorized as excellent, 10 items of the test are categorized as good, 9 items of the test are categorized assatisfactory, 13 items of the test are categorized as poor and 5 items of the test are categorized as very poor. In conclusion, most of the items in English summative of Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Bina Cendekia Tampo do not fulfill the quality of a good test.

Abstract

This study is aimed at determining the teachers’ purposes of using ICT and to provide information regarding the ICT applications used in teaching the English subject at SMA Negeri 4 Kendari. This study employed a descriptive design. To find out a clear understanding of this subject matter, the study focused on eight teachers who were teaching English using ICT-based learning. The data was collected by using a close-ended questionnaire with thirty items and interview with five questions, and analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version. The result of this study showed that the teachers give their positive response to all item of the questionnaire. The teachers use ICT to help them for course and lesson planning, using ICT resources and assisted technology and using ICT to design teaching and learning unit plans and activities. Moreover, the teachers use the applications such as; Google Classroom, Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Quipper School, Edmodo and other media to support and link their teaching and learning process in the classroom. They also use HTML editor, Adobe Dreamweaver, Visual Studio Editor, etc. to support the students actively contribute their knowledge in the classroom practices. Therefore, this study can be concluded that the use of ICT in teaching the English subject is very important to support the teachers in providing their material, especially using some applications provided

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the extent of relationship between students’ attendance and their achievement in the environment of online class at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University. This research used correlational research design. The population consisted of English Education Department students of Halu Oleo University who enrolled in the third semester of 2020/2021 academic year with a total of 53 students from class A. Subject of the research taken was the whole population of 53 students from class A. The research instrument used was the data record of students’ attendance and their achievement in Psycholinguistic Course. To analyze the data, the researcher used both descriptive and inferential statistics. The result of this research reveals that: (1) Students’ attendance level is on good level with mean percentage is 88.49 (SD = 13.45); (2) Students’ level of achievement results in good level as well with mean is 83.59 (SD = 3.58); (3) The calculation of Spearman Rho Coefficient Correlation (ρ) is 0.076, the significance value is 0.310 > 0.05 (accepted α value) and ρ = 0.076 < 0.248 (critical value of Spearman Rho for N = 45), and the equivalence test results in lo_r = -0.2225 for lower bound area which is bigger than -0.7 (Δ > ΔL) and hi_r = 0.3615 in higher bound area which is less than 0.7 (Δ < ΔU). It reveals that the correlation found between students’ attendance and their achievement in online class is very weak and statistically not significant yet statistically equivalent. In conclusion, there is no meaningful relationship between students’ attendance and their achievement in online class.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of show and tell method on students’ speaking skill at the first grade of SMA Negeri 1 Bone Muna. The researcher applied a quasi-experimental design to find out whether there was a significant effect of show and tell method on students speaking skill. The population of this research was the first grade with the total of the students were 46 students. The sample taken by using cluster random sampling and the total sample was 23 students in the experimental class and 23 students in the control class. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test in two classes, giving treatment in the experimental class by using show and tell method and conventional method in control class, and giving post-test in two classes to know students’ speaking skill after taught by show and tell method compared with the result in control class that taught by conventional method. The instrument of this research was an oral test. The data were analysed by using descriptive statistics and an inferential statistic that is counting in SPSS 16.0. To examine the hypothesis the researcher used an independent sample t-test. The result shows that students’ mean score of post-test in experimental class is raising. The factor that makes this study is raising because of the media used when students speak namely personal object or students' favourite object so students’ can express and develop their ideas based on these objects. Besides, show and tell method requires students to speak in front of the class so that students have the opportunity to practice their speaking. Therefore, show and tell method has a significant effect on students’ speaking skill at the first grade of SMA Negeri 1 Bone.

Abstract

In this era, speaking is very important for all sectors, particularly in the field of education. But, most students tend to be reluctant to speak in English due to several factors. One of them, they have anxieties which enable them burdened to speak in the target language. Therefore, this research aims to investigate students experiences on speaking anxiety in virtual classroom presentation and to figure out the way to manage it. The researcher used qualitative research and used narrative inquiry as the research design. The data collected through semi-structured interview. Two participants from Senior High School students in Bekasi are required to fully participate in the interview. The result of this research showed that the students have afraid feelings to speak English, the students are blank while it starting in speaking, question and answer session is the biggest challenge for student in virtual classroom presentation and supporting to keep in the virtual classroom presentation is important suggestion to students who feel anxiety, and also the students reduce the anxiety with practice.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the factors that affect English national examination success in Computer Based Test (CBT) at SMAN 1 Raha. This study's research question was "What are factors that affect the success of English national examination in Computer Based Test (CBT) at SMAN 1 Raha?". The study's objective is to find out information about the factors that affect national English examination success in Computer Based Test (CBT) at SMAN 1 Raha. This study used a descriptive design. The types of data in this study were (a) primary data, directly collected from interviews with teachers at SMAN 1 Raha (teacher interview), and (2) secondary data was collected by observation and documentation to support the primary data (observation and documentation). The study subjects were three teachers of SMAN 1 Raha who were being involved in the examination committee. The collected data were analyzed through the following steps: (1) data reduction,  implemented by summarizing field notes, sorting out the main things related to the test succession factors, and compiling them systematically in order to provide a sharper picture and make it easier to track back when the data is needed. (2) Data display, to see the overall picture of the study results, the researcher displays the collected data to map factors that are affecting the test succession. (3) Conclusions and verification, to picture out how the factors affect the test succession, the researcher draws the following conclusions; (1) The success of the National Computer Based Test (CBT) implementation is highly influenced by facility availability based on national computer-based test standards that consist of human resources, internet networks, servers, and electricity. (2) SMAN 1 Raha conducted the National Computer Based Test (CBT) successfully in the academic year 2017/2018 for the first time.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyse grammatical cohesive markers in students’ thesis background. The objectives of this study was to describe the kinds of grammatical cohesion used in students’ thesis background, to find out the mistake of the use of grammatical cohesion on thesis background, and to know the reason why the students made mistake in their thesis background. The respondents were under graduated students of English Education Department of Halu Oleo University in academic year 2014/2015. The design of this study was qualitative descriptive that consisted of collecting ( reading students’ thesis background), classifying (giving a code in every grammatical item), identifying (determining the incorrect word), analyzing (explaining the mistake and give the correction) and interviewing about the respondents’ mistake. The finding showed that the students were able to apply grammatical cohesion devices in their thesis background which were conjunction, reference, ellipsis and substitution. The students mostly made mistakes in the use of conjunction and reference. The students made mistake because most of them did not give more attention to the background thesis text, they rechecked in such a hurry.
