Abstract

This study explores the representation of gender and social class stereotypes in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The data were collected by analyzing key scenes and dialogues in the movie, focusing on instances that reflect stereotypes. The analysis employed theories of gender and social class stereotypes to examine how these stereotypes are represented and portrayed within the main characters, Katniss Everdeen, President Snow, and Plutarch. The findings reveal that gender stereotypes are more dominant than social class stereotypes in the film. The main female character subverts traditional gender roles, displaying strength and independence in contrast to the conventional portrayal of women as weak and reliant on men. Additionally, social class stereotypes are depicted through discrimination and prejudice against lower-class characters. This research aims to enhance readers’ critical understanding of gender and social class representations, promote gender equality, and encourage respect for social diversity.

Abstract

Peer evaluation can enhance learning outcomes, interpersonal skills, and student engagement in higher education. However, while factors like ability levels and gender influence peer evaluation dynamics, the role of social presence—projecting individual identities and connecting with peers—remains underexplored. Additionally, there is limited research on how culture affects peer evaluation in non-Western contexts, such as Indonesia. This study examines the intersection of social presence and peer evaluation in Indonesian higher education, focusing on students' perceptions, benefits, and challenges. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study involved surveys and interviews with 69 students in an English for Specific Purposes course at a private Indonesian university. After completing online peer evaluations, participants completed an online survey with closed- and open-ended questions. Five students were also interviewed for additional insights. The findings highlight that peer evaluation provided benefits such as changed perspectives, closer relationships, and opportunities for self-reflection. However, challenges, including reluctance to provide honest feedback, were also identified. From a sociocultural perspective, these challenges may relate to Indonesia’s collectivist culture. Recommendations for improving peer evaluation include conducting evaluations in class, justifying scores, and providing task evidence. This study emphasizes the potential of peer evaluation to enhance social presence and educational outcomes when properly guided and supported while also underscoring the importance of considering cultural context in its implementation.

Abstract

This study investigates the language registers employed by women’s clothing sellers during TikTok Live sessions, emphasizing the specific words and phrases to promote communication in a fast-paced sales environment. Through qualitative investigation of live-stream interactions, the study finds that nouns (41.86%) are predominantly used to provide detailed product descriptions, followed by verbs, adjectives, abbreviations, and compound words. Nouns convey information about stock availability, sizes, and materials.  The study differentiates between lexical and contextual meanings, with lexical meanings (60.47%) taking precedence, providing precise definitions that improve intelligibility for potential purchasers. Lexical meanings enhance clarity and understanding for potential buyers, while contextual meanings, though less frequent, are vital for maintaining dynamic interaction with the audience. These findings highlight the sellers' strategic use of clear product descriptions and conversational language to boost audience engagement and drive sales. This study suggests that the language strategies used on TikTok Live Sessions are adaptable, effectively balancing product clarity with audience interaction to optimize the sales process.

Abstract

This research aims to identify and assess the translation strategies and ideologies used by translators in the subtitles of the film Tangled Ever After. A descriptive qualitative approach focuses on analysing words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that feature translation techniques within the movie’s subtitles. Data collection involves reviewing documents and archives, watching the film, and examining the subtitles in both the source and target languages, followed by transcription. The analysis includes watching the film, reading the subtitles, evaluating the employed translation techniques and ideologies, and drawing conclusions. The findings indicate that 10 distinct translation techniques were used across 24 instances in the subtitles. The techniques employed were: literal translation (5 instances), compensation (4), modulation (3), transposition (3), borrowing (2), amplification (2), description (2), discursive creation (1), generalization (1), and reduction (1). The analysis reveals that the most frequently used technique was literal translation, representing 20.83% of the instances, followed by compensation (16.6%) and modulation and transposition (12.5% each). Techniques such as borrowing, amplification, and description appeared less frequently, while discursive creation, generalization, and reduction were the least utilized, each making up 4.16% of the total.

Abstract

This study presents a focused character analysis of Heaven Official’s Blessing (book 1) by MXTX, a novel set in a fantastical world inspired by Chinese mythology. The narrative centers around Xie Lian, a former crown prince who ascends to become a martial god. The analysis aims to deepen understanding of the character types within the novel as it has only few prior academic studies conducted. By categorizing and examining these character types, the study reveals how each character functions within the story, enriching readers' comprehension of their roles. Character types are divided into two categories: major characters and minor characters. Major characters include the protagonist (Xie Lian), antagonist (Xuan Ji and Kemo), and tritagonist (Fu Yao and Nan Feng). Minor characters include foil (Pei Xiu), static (Ling Wen), dynamic (Pei Ming, Feng Xin, Mu Qing), flat (Tian Sheng, Xiao-Pengtou, Xiao-Ying), round (A-Zhao, Banyue), and stock (Wind Master, Jun Wu). This study has limitations as it focuses solely on character types in Book 1, though the novel spans eight books, leaving many characters and literary elements unexplored. Future studies should fill these gaps with comparative analyses, exploring cultural influences, applying diverse literary theories, and using multidisciplinary approaches.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of violence in romantic relationships shown in the film *It Ends With Us* through the perspective of contemporary feminism. The focus of this study is how forms of violence, both physical and emotional, are represented and how the film reflects or challenges patriarchal values that are still dominant in interpersonal relationships. The research method used is textual analysis with a qualitative approach, referring to contemporary feminism theories that highlight issues of power, gender, and women's agency. The results show that the movie depicts relationship violence as a complex experience that is often wrapped up in the dynamics of love and forgiveness. Furthermore, the film features the main female character's struggle to redefine her position as an empowered individual in the midst of an oppressive situation. The findings make an important contribution to the discourse on critical awareness of gender-based violence in popular media and its relevance to contemporary feminist struggles.

Abstract

This study presents a comparative structural analysis of two renowned poems, “She Walks in Beauty" by G.G. Byron and "The More Loving One" by W.H. Auden, which are widely regarded as some of their finest works. The objective is to identify the similarities and differences between these poems, which originate from distinct poetic eras: Byron’s work represents the Romantic era of the late 18th century, while Auden’s belongs to the Modern era of the early 20th century. To facilitate the comparison, the analysis focuses on three key structural elements of poetry: theme, figures of speech, and imagery. The findings reveal both similarities and differences between the two poems. Shared elements include a focus on love as the central theme, the use of metaphor, personification, and hyperbole in figures of speech, and the incorporation of visual and organic imagery. However, the differences lie in how the theme of love is portrayed. Byron’s poem celebrates the beauty of a woman, while Auden’s reflects the fear of losing a loved one. Additional differences are evident in figures of speech and imagery; Byron employs simile and kinesthetic imagery, which are absent in Auden’s poem. This comparative analysis underscores the influence of distinct poetic eras on these two iconic works’ structural and thematic elements.
