Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant improvement in writing and speaking abilities in narrative stories of the students who were taught by using Storyboard and those who were not. This study applied a quasi experimental design. The population of the study was the tenth graders with the total number of 224, where sixty-four students were taken as the sample by using purposive sampling. The data were collected by using writing and speaking tests and analyzed statistically by using paired-sample ttest and independent sample t-test. Based on the result independent sample t-test for writing test and the value of t-obtained (6.042) was higher than critical value of t-test (2.000 and 1.994). In addition, the value of t-obtained of speaking (4.649) was higher than critical value of t-test (2.000 and 1.994). This means that there was significant improvement in the abilities to write and speak narrative stories between the students who were taught by using Storyboard and those who were not. Thus, the use of storyboard could improve the students‘ writing and speaking abilities in retelling narrative stories. Keywords: Improving, writing, speaking, abilities, and storyboard

Abstract

ABSTRACT:  Teaching English for Senior High School involves writing skill though not as much as reading skill. Writing is used to identify, analyze and develop ideas. They must learn how to compose sentences, build texts and express ideas within the standards of written English. However, there are still many students who have low achievement in writing. Therefore, the objective of the study was to find out whether the collaborative writing technique through Facebook could improve students writing skill especially in narrative writing. The randomized control group pretest-posttest design was applied in this study. Forty out of 100 third grade students of SMA Methodist 2 Palembang in academic year 2010/2011 were taken as the sample. There were 3 groups, each of which consisted of 20 students. The obtained data were analyzed using paired sample t-test and independent sample test. The findings showed that there was significant progress in writing achievement of the students who were taught using collaborative writing technique through Facebook. Keywords: collaborative writing technique, facebook, improving writing  skill and narrative text.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to find out the reason of English teachers switch their language during teaching process and the types of code switching were used by them in teaching learning process in PAUD Cipta Kreatif Bangsa Palembang. The population of this study was English teacher at PAUD Cipta Kreatif Bangsa 2015, the number of teacher are eight. The Sample was used in this study just one teacher. The Method of this study is descriptive qualitative method. Technique for collecting the data by observation and interview. Based on this study, the writer found that there are three types of code switching that is used by teacher in the classroom, they are : 1) extra – sentential code switching, 2) inter – sentential code switching, and 3) intra – sentential code switching. The writer also found some reasons why teacher switch their language, they are : (1) To clarify expalanation, (2) To show their formality to the students when they speak in the, (3) To talk about a particular topic a teacher feels free and more comfortable to express their emotions, excitements in the classroom, and (4) For affective functions, teacher switches code to express his/her emotional feeling, and the students do not have to understand the meaning but can receive the affective meaning of the speaker whether he/she is happy, excited, sad, angry, mocking the hearer, and so on. Abstract

ABSTRAK: Bangsa Indonesia adalah bangsa yang sangat menjunjung tinggi tata nilai dan karakter. Kemajuan peradaban dunia di segala bidang telah membuat perubahan pola pikir, sikap, dan perilaku masyarakat, termasuk masyarakat Indonesia. Secara positif kemajuan peradaban dunia berpengaruh pada tingkat kesejahteraan masyarakat, pola pikir, sikap, dan perilaku. Namun yang terjadi di sebagian masyarakat, majunya peradaban dunia membuat karakter mereka menjadi lebih buruk. Diperlukan suatu tindakan nyata untuk mengatasi hal tersebut yaitu pendidikan karakter. Tulisan ini berusaha untuk memberikan sebuah gambaran dan saran tentang wacana pengembalian kembali pelajaran Bahasa Daerah guna menumbuhkan kembali karakter siswa. Kata kunci: Pelajaran bahasa daerah, bahasa Ogan, karakter.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The utilization of web-based learning media in English Language Teaching (ELT) has become a popular trend and gained more acceptances among educators and students in recent decades. Webquest is a web-based learning medium used for supporting students in learning and improving their English skills. The aims of this study was to find out whether Webquest can be an alternative learning medium for students to promote the enhancement of their English skills, especially reading and writing through investigating the way students perceived it in teaching and learning process. This study used descriptive method which involved thirty-one of eleventh grade students as the participants. The data were collected by conducing interview and administering questionnaire dealing with five issues; instruction and timing, task, relevance and involvement, collaborative learning, and evaluation. The result revealed that students had favorable perceptions towards the use of Webquest in promoting their reading and writing skills. The students believed that Webquest is an alternative learning medium which facilitate them to attain deeper comprehension and better achievement both in reading and writing. Abstract

ABSTRAK: Permasalahan dalam penelitian ini adalah mengukurkeefektifan penggunaan media gambar berseri terhadap hasilbelajar siswa dalam menulis karangan eksposisi siswa kelas VIISMP Kayuara Kuning Kabupaten Banyuasin. Populasi dalampenelitian ini sebanyak 37 siswa, sampel diambil denganmenggunakan teknik cluster sampling dan didapatkan dua kelasyaitu kelas VII.6 sebagai kelas eksperimen dengan jumlah 37peserta dan kelas VII.4 sebagai kelas control dengan jumlah 37peserta didik. Metode pengumpulan data yaitu teknik tes, observasidan dokumentasi. Hasil analisis data tes diperoleh untuk kelaseksperimen 80,68 dan untuk kelas kontrol 60,16. Untuk analisisdata observasi yaitu terjadi peningkatan hasil belajar siswa padakelas eksperimen dengan rerata 63,28% sedangkan rerata kelascontrol sebesar 52,31%. Dari rerata keaktifan hasil belajar siswasecara keseluruhan pada kelas eksperimen dikategorikan aktifsedangkan pada kelas kontrol dikategorikan cukup. Adapun hasilpenelitian didapatkan ada pengaruh metode gambar berseriterhadap hasil belajar siswa dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesiamateri menulis karangan eksposisi pada siswa kelas VII di SMPKayuara Kuning Kecamatan Banyuasin yang ditunjukan pada hasilp value > 0,05 (p=0,000)> berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan,media gambar berseri dapat dijadiakan salah satu alternatif mediapembelajaran.Kata-kata kunci : media gambar berseri, karangan eksposisi.

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan nilai-nilai didaktis dalam novel Si Jamin dan Si Johan karya Merari Siregar. Subjek penelitian ini adalah novel yang berjudul Si Jamin dan Si Johan karya Merari Siregar, sedangkan yang menjadi objek dalam penelitian ini adalah nilai-nilai didaktis dalam novel Si Jamin dan Si Johan karya Merari Siregar. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan dengan cara dokumentasi. Data hasil dokumentasi dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Berdasarkan penelitian tersebut peneliti memperoleh hasil bahwa dalam novel Si Jamin dan Si Johan karya Merari Siregar terkandung nilai-nilai didaktis: (1) nilai agama; (2) nilai budaya masyarakat; (3) nilai intelektual. Kata-kata kunci: nilai-nilai didaktis, novel

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The use of digital storytelling is a media to increase the students’ speaking that involved maximally throughout the students  ability to create their own digital storytelling, so they can explore their imagination and active in involving speaking activities. Thus, it is interested in finding out whether there was significant improvement of students’ speaking skill by using digital storytelling and whether there was a significant difference in speaking achievement between the tenth grade students who were taught by using digital storytelling and those who were not. This method used was  quasi experimental  design. The population of the study is the tenth grade students of SMAN 18 Palembang. The purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample consisting of 72 students on this study.  The  data were collected by speaking test in the form of monologue. The collected data was analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test.  The results of paired sample t-test showed that the students’ speaking skill were improved and  The result of independent sample t-test showed that the value of t-obtainis higher (2.142) than the value of t-table (1.994).  The table also showed that the p-output of students’ speaking skill in both groups was lower than the level of significant 0.05. The significant (2-tailed) 0.036 < 0.05 and t-obtain 2.142 > t-table 1.994.  It can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the students who were taught by using digital storytelling and those who were not.  Key words: Digital storytelling, speaking skill.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Song is an effective and interesting teaching tool in the classroom of language learning. It is regarded as one of the most enjoyable ways for practicing and developing English literacy of young learners. It is also useful to encourage them to be active in order to improve their skills. The purpose of this article is therefore threefold: first, theoretical discussion that presents about English literacy and young learners. Second, some suggestions of giving the selections of songs are given regarding the activities. Third, some recommended teaching instruction for listen and do song that empowers children’s English literacy. Incorporating song into language learning serves not only as an effective teaching tool but also provides a positive learning experience for young learners.
