Abstract

Madurese society gives privileges and high social status to those who have the title of Hajj. However, research on the Hajj in Madura focused more on the perspective of male Hajj (Ajjhi). In fact, the number of female pilgrims in Madura is higher than the number of males. The research aimed to explain the process of forming gender identity, religious identity, and social identity of Hajj from the perspective of female Hajj (Ebhu Ajjhi) in Madura. The research used qualitative methods, with a phenomenological approach. Data was obtained from observations and in-depth interviews with 16 informants in Bangkalan and Sampang, Madura. Data was analyzed using the Denzin model with a theoretical framework of identity construction, social capital, and symbolic capital. It found that the Hajj title influenced changes in Ebhu Ajjhi's physical and non-physical identity. Physical changes include more conservative clothing, meanwhile non-physical changes include increasing socio-economic-cultural access. Hajj title are also a source of social capital and symbolic capital, growing new networks, building trust and respect. However, the privilege of the title of Hajj in Madura is mainly enjoyed by male Hajj. Traditional gender roles shape different perceptions about Hajj title in Madura. Even though he has the title of Hajj, Ebhu Ajjhi's role are limited to the domestic sphere.

Abstract

Humans understand the concept of qadha and qadar resulting in two views, namely: all provisions have been arranged by Allah without needing to make any effort and the view that humans are obliged to make maximum efforts and then accept His destiny. In the digital era, this concept needs to be rethought which has relevance and is more adaptive. The aim of this article is to explain the concept of Qadha and Qadar Allah and their relevance to the digital era, as well as how to live in order in the face of digitalization. This research uses qualitative methods with library research techniques. However, under certain conditions, God's will remains the answer that cannot be achieved even with the most sophisticated technology. The existence of Allah's will should not be used as an excuse for a Muslim not to try and adapt to current developments, including in the digital era. Because the concept of qadha and qadar is actually relevant to the digital era. However, they must be able to combine the two by trying as hard as possible, then surrendering their efforts to God's will. This is what is meant by an effort to live in order in the digital era. A Muslim will not feel alone after struggling and making the most of digital developments. They will find a balance between maximum effort, prayers offered, and submission to Allah's will.

Abstract

The paper described the struggle for spiritual authority occurred in the Majelis Sholawat al-Banjari (MSB) in Serdang Bedagai, North Sumatra. This research aims to explained the occurrence of power struggles that began with conflicts between Tuan Guru MSB who questioned the source of spiritual authority regarding the practice of reciting Maulid Simtudduror. This research attempted to collect factual data through observation, interviews, and documentation using a field study. The data is described descriptively and analytically to illustrate how the struggle for spiritual authority is played out and how spiritual authority is formed, fought for, and defended. The results of the study explain that the struggle for authority is influenced by the source of spiritual authority by claiming that Tuan Guru has an ijazah/sanad. In contrast, another Tuan Guru claims to be waliyullah to gain support from the congregation and the Banjar community to fight over who has the most right to be the deliverer and teacher in the MSB. The struggle ends with Tuan Guru MSB who has an ijazah/sanad that has authenticity value as evidence of teachings that connect the teaching of reading Maulid Simtudduror to Guru Sekumpul as a student of legitimate spiritual authority. Meanwhile, recognition as waliyullah is only a form of strengthening Tuan Guru in playing the role of spiritual authority to gain the support of the congregation and the trust of urang Banjar.

Abstract

The spread of religious radicalism is no longer confined to the general public but has also penetrated academic settings, particularly Islamic-based universities, such as Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). This study aims to analyze the role of Muhammadiyah, with its teaching of rahmatan lil ‘alamin, in addressing cases of religious radicalism among students. The research employs a qualitative method with a field study approach and an experimental model. The subjects of the study were 156 undergraduate students from Agribusiness and Islamic Religious Education programs at UMY, class of 2024. Data was collected through pretests and posttests conducted in February 2024. Data analysis involved data collection, reduction, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the implementation of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin in preventing religious radicalism among Agribusiness undergraduates at the Faculty of Agriculture, UMY, was initially 33.7%. After receiving materials delivered by Muhammadiyah as part of its strategy to prevent religious radicalism in higher education, students' understanding of religious radicalism increased to 94%. As a moderate Islamic organization, Muhammadiyah has exemplified the values of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin, particularly in Indonesia. Its efforts to promote Islam as a mercy to all creation are evident in its initiatives to educate the community regardless of their background and its humanitarian actions that benefit all of humanity.
