Abstract

Background: The storytelling and narrative approaches surpassed the study of the interior and cinematic by the idea of staging. In film production, the use of interior elements to aid storytelling is called interior mise-en-scene. However, more research still needs to be done on how spatial metaphors in the interior mise-en-scene are explored. The spatial metaphor is central to creating atmosphere and setting based on film narratives. Therefore, this article examines a spatial metaphor in the horror film mise-en-scene, focusing on monstrous maternity. The case studies are the film ‘A Mother’s love’ (Joko Anwar, Indonesia) and ‘Jendela’ (M. Subash Abdullah, Malaysia). Both films portray the woman protagonist as a psychotic character who haunts their own house. Purpose: The article aims to find spatial metaphors to represent the idea of monstrous maternal as a horror motif. Methods: Through qualitative and literature review, the element of the interior mise-en-scene and abjection theory has been analyzed to find meaning in spatial language. Results: As a result, the spatial metaphor in the film portrays the idea of topo analysis- the topography of the intimate being in the house. Many spaces are composed in dream scene situation, and the use of liminal space become central to supernatural narratives. A distorted play camera frames the space, engaging the audience to enter the character’s mind. Implications: This research contributes to how spatial metaphor in film can aid storytelling in interior design. The interior mise-en-scene helps the designer translate the narrative’s text into a spatial dimension through the staging technique.

Abstract

Background: Popular children’s television shows are thought to imitate elementary school children’s language behavior. If children do not get parental assistance, television viewing can have an adverse effect on children’s behavior. Purpose: Therefore, this study aims to examine the influence of children’s television shows on the imitation behavior of elementary-age children. Methods: This study took a descriptive-qualitative approach. In-depth interviews with parents of elementary-age children who watch television were used to collect data for this study. The data analysis employed the interactive model. Results: This study found various imitations such as (1) linguistic imitation, children mimic the language used in television shows and add new vocabulary; (2) behavioral imitation, including both positive and negative behaviors. Positive habits include: Dancing, helping to cook like Bald, imitating the call to prayer, and reciting the Koran. Negative habits include language training, listening to adhan, singing, eating independently, understanding the show, reading, sharing food, practicing prayers, and mimicking adhan. Based on the impact of the shows, it is evident that not all children’s television shows positively impact their language and behavior. Implications: Theoretically, this research implies that elementary school children’s imitation behavior can be formed through television shows that children watch. The practical implications of this research are as input for parents and teachers to have television shows that children watch as a medium for elementary school children’s education.

For the flashback plot meaning of the self-harm scene, all informants are in a dominant position. There are no informants on the opposition’s position on the meaning of the self-harm scene, location setting, and the flashback plot meaning of the self-harm scene. Abstract

Background: The 2022 Cannes Film Festival was held from May 17 – 28, 2022, in Cannes, France. The 2022 Cannes Film Festival succeeded in attracting public attention, shown through tweets using #Cannes2022 uploaded in various languages, which show diversity. Purpose: This study aims to determine the distribution of the #Cannes2022 data at the actor level and the diversity of languages used in the #Cannes2022. Methods: The method of this research is a mixed method by combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative methods were used to obtain 2,500 tweets using the Netlytic application. Qualitative methods were used to analyze the language used in those tweets. Results: The results of this study indicate that @festival_cannes, @21metgala, @iuteamstarcandy, and @filmupdates are famous and important actors because they always provide updates related to Cannes 2022. Those actors initiate the #Cannes2022 communication network and become reference material. In the #Cannes2022 communication network, there are 24 languages used, including English, Thai, Japanese, French, and Spanish. English is dominant, with a percentage of 51.96%, followed by French, with a percentage of 31.48%. English and French are dominant because popular actors use them in disseminating information about Cannes 2022. Other languages are not dominant because actors with few followers only upload them. The language used in the #Cannes2022 communication network is already quite diverse but still dominated by English. Implications: Popular actors should use other languages to increase diversity at the Cannes Film Festival.

Abstract

Background: Using celebrity endorsement to represent a brand can provide various advantages. However, if in selecting a celebrity endorser, the brand has not carried out the selection process correctly and precisely; then the brand can be threatened to face various risks due to celebrity endorsement tactics. Walt Disney Studios Indonesia experienced this in selecting Via Vallen as the singer of the localization song for the “Lead the Way” Official soundtrack. Purpose: This study aims to describe and analyze the selection process of Via Vallen. Methods: This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type of research. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and literature study. The data validation technique is done by using source triangulation. Results: The results showed that in the selection process of Via Vallen, the Walt Disney Studios Indonesia had carried out a series of selection stages as follows: market research, presentation, discussion to narrowing of candidates, meeting to final negotiations, and ending it with the signing of the contract. However, Walt Disney Studios Indonesia has not yet done the steps of contacting a PR agency to create an MPR campaign and proposing the use of celebrity endorsement tactics by the PR agency. Implications: Based on this research, it can be concluded that Walt Disney Studios Indonesia and similar companies could be more careful in choosing celebrity endorsers to represent brands to avoid disadvantages that could harm the brand. In addition, to strengthen this model, quantitative research can be carried out to see whether this model has a relationship with the success of choosing a celebrity endorser that can benefit a company.

Abstract

Background: It is a common fact that the rapid development of technology influenced many aspects of the world, including mass communication. Television, as the most popular and familiar broadcast media in Indonesia, has experienced several changes due to the presence of advanced technology. One of the significant transformations is the transition from analog to digital broadcasting systems. The new era of digital broadcasting could improve the performance and quality of digital television itself. Purpose: This recent study aimed to obtain an overview of the realization carried out by one of the local private broadcasting institutions in Banten, JPM TV. Methods: Using a qualitative case study along with in-depth interviews and observation as data collection techniques, this study examines JPM TV from various aspects in realizing digital TV broadcasts in Banten Province. Results: The study’s findings highlighted that JPM TV strives to realize digital broadcasting by gradually replacing equipment with tools that support digital broadcasting and elements of human resources trained and prepared with special internal and external training. JPM TV also collaborated with LPPM (Mix Broadcasting Organizing Agency), namely Mix Metro TV. The ongoing process is coordinated with the government. Obstacles faced during the migration process are the socioeconomic conditions of the people who have not been able to support the digital broadcasting process, which is characterized by the difficulty of obtaining digital broadcasting at relatively low prices; besides that, it is also necessary to increase the capacity of Human Resources (HR) so that television shows are more comfortable to watch. Implications: One of the implications is that the government must innovate to provide incentives that can stimulate the readiness of the digital broadcasting ecosystem.
