Abstract

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) is an Islamic-based political party that has won the Depok City Regional Election (Pilkada) four times in a row since the first Pilkada was held in the city. The consistent change in leadership in Depok raises questions about PKS’s hegemonic practices to maintain and expand its influence among the people of Depok. This research aims to identify PKS Depok’s hegemonic practices according to Antonio Gramsci’s theory, which emphasizes creating ideological consensus, the role of intellectuals, and political leadership. The study uses qualitative methods, collecting data through interviews and literature review. It is conducted in Depok, focusing on the DPD PKS Depok and the 2020 Depok City regional Election as a case study. The study concludes that Idris-Imam, PKS-backed candidates for Mayor and Vice Mayor of Depok, won the election through the dissemination of the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Islamic ideology, the role of intellectuals such as ustad, and educational institutions, as well as the religious political leadership of Kiai Idris, the former Depok Mayor.

This research is motivated by the case of President Joko Widodo's son, Kaesang Pangareb, who became chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) after becoming a cadre for two days. Therefore, this study aims to explain the political capital of Kaesang Pangareb in becoming the chairman of PSI and how the public responds to the process. The findings of this study explain that there are three critical political capitals owned by Kaesang Pangareb, the president's son, who became the party chairman in a short time. First, the representation of young people who perform well in building businesses. Then, there was solid political support from his father, the active president of Indonesia. This support from President Joko Widodo has enormous power as a form of privilege for Kaesang Pangareb to be elected as chairman in such a quick process. Moreover, the support from the PSI party elite also significantly contributes to consolidating cadres at the central and regional levels to support Kaesang Pangareb in becoming chairman. Then, the public response, both in the real world and in cyberspace related to this case, shows a positive perception and supports Kaesang Pangareb's political movement.

Abstract

In recent decades, China has significantly increased its global economic presence, emerging as one of the leading powers in the international system, in alignment with its strategic plan through 2049. This presence includes a keen interest in Southeast Europe, with Serbia identified as a key strategic partner. China's approach to Serbia intersects with Russia's longstanding presence rooted in the historical and cultural ties with Serbia. This paper examines the strategic interests and goals of China and Russia in Serbia, exploring their respective methods and tools. It also delves into Serbia's foreign policy aspirations for sustainable security trying to balance the presence of superpowers within, and around its territory. The paper evaluates Serbia's try of strategic navigation of its geostrategic position between East and West, questioning if Serbia is actually naive or aware of its circumstances. The study elucidates on how China and Russia's strategic maneuvers in the region, often subconsciously, shape Serbia and its neighboring countries. Within this intricate landscape, the concept of “Strategic symmetry” emerges as a crucial element, highlighting the delicate balance of influence that both powers exert in Serbia while it strives to maintain its entry into the European Union.

Abstract

This study examines the role and impact of political patronage on Indonesia’s governance and its contribution to the power disparity. It offers strategies to mitigate patronage’s negative effects and promote effective governance, highlighting its persistence as a sign of Indonesia’s still-developing democracy. Using a qualitative descriptive method and literature review, data collection includes primary sources like research reports and surveys, and secondary sources such as journal articles, books, and news. Key search terms include patronage, clientelism, corruption, oligarchy, and money politics. Findings reveal that patronage remains widespread through vote buying, selective distribution of goods and services, and misuse of public funds for elections. Historically, patronage dates back to pre-independence (tribute systems), post-independence (oligarchic consolidation), and reformasi (non-merit-based governance). Under the New Order, patronage networks became deeply institutionalized, hindering democratic progress. Today, patronage persists in regional elections, where incumbents act as patrons appointing officials, while civil servants seek career advancement through these networks. The social, political, and economic entrenchment of patronage weakens institutions, erodes public trust, reduces competency in governance, and limits fair, pro-people policies. To address these challenges, this study recommends strengthening anti-corruption bodies, enhancing political party funding regulations, ensuring merit-based appointments, and improving the electoral system for greater inclusivity and accountability.
