Abstract

This paper explores the veiling issues and the negotiation of piety among women in Komunitas Muslimah Beauty of Detik Forum. This paper examines to what extent this online community discusses hijab as fashion and piety? what the basis of the arguments for negotiating them? and how is piety constructed through commodity by women in that forum? The answers to this question are important to understand because they examine the assumption considering the lack of connection between piety and veiling when both are more materialized in such of commodity fetishism. To do this, I analyze the online discussion within the Komunitas Muslimah Beautiful in detik.com website. The findings of the paper inform both sociological understanding of the rise democracy in terms of the public sphere as well as the negotiation of women in their effort to connect veiling and piety within their online discussion. Keywords: agency, piety, commodity, public sphere, beauty

Abstract

This study aims to describe Ghazali’s sufism and its influences in Southeast Asia, mainly in Indonesia. Al-Ghazali is a renowned Muslim intellectual who has a special place at every Moslem’s heart, especially in Indonesia. He possesses encyclopedic expertise within various disciplines, ranging from fiqh and ulusulfiqh, al-kalam, logic, philosophy, and sufism. Despite his vast expertise, his practices are more well-known in sufism than in Islamic law, theology, and philosophy due to his long journey, exquisite experience, and groundbreaking thinking within the discipline of Sufism. Ghazali developed a new method of thinking within Islamic epistemology, widely known as Irfani epistemology. One of Ghazali’s biggest achievements is that Ghazali is considered successful in integrating between Sufism and the fiqh (sharia) Ghazali demonstrated his intellectual brilliance of integrating both branches of Islamic thinking (between sharia and the essence of Islam). Ghazali’s notable influence and position within the discipline of sufism made him granted the title of “Hujjat al-Islam”.Ghazali’sSufism spreads and influences the development of Sunni Islam not only in the Arabian peninsula but also in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the influence of Muhammadiyah in shifting the meaning of Yaa Qowiyyu ritual or Apeman in Jatinom, Klaten. The discussion focuses on examining the role of the dominant group in establishing the mainstream culture in the area. Upon its arrival, Muhammadiyah has established a strong existence in the village and has changed the beliefs of Jatinom residents about the ritual although they still keep the Yaa Qowiyuu existence. Consequently, changes are made in the ritual. The practice is no longer called ‘ritual’ as its term or meaning. Instead, Apeman has turned into a festival. Moreover, the residents’ belief in receiving blessing from the traditional rice flour cake called apem has already gone. Through the ethnographic method, this research shows the ways Muhammadiyah shifted the Jatinom society’s religious perspectives and the critical implications of the efforts to the ritual itself. This paper elaborates the aforementioned problems to observe whether Muhammadiyah did the subtle shifting to the local culture through state power. Using Foucault’s theory about power and knowledge, this research observes the existence of cooperation between Muhammadiyah as the local organization and the state in modifying the ritual and its meaning into the festival. The symbols signifying the cooperation can be seen in this festival. Such cooperation shows that the nationalization and Muhammadiyahization, the process of a society’s shift towards Muhammadiyah, run simultaneously in Jatinom village. Keywords:Ritual, Apeman, and State power

Abstract

This paper describes one of the reasons why Islam is so embedded in the identity and the culture of Bugis society. By studying some works of literature about Darul Islam in South Sulawesi and the Bugis pre-Islamic religion, the Islamization process in South Sulawesi was colored by fears, terror, and massacre. It was in Darul Islam Era, under Kahar Muzakar, when Bugis pre-Islamic religion was brutally replaced by Islam since the gerombolan wanted to establish Indonesia Islamic State (NII). This paper also offers a description of Indonesian politics in micro view, the local history of the politics in South Sulawesi. Keywords:Islamization, Darul Islam, Bugis, and Kahar Muzakar

Abstract

This study aims to trace the cultural symbols and identity politics that occur in the city of Sampit. This is based on several important things that happened in Sampit. Sampit is a heterogeneous and multicultural city and at the same time there were riots between the Dayak and Madura tribes around 2000, which resulted in the emptying and rejection of Madurese residents. At least in the past two decades, Sampit has turned into a city that displays an identity as a Muslim city with the emergence of urban icons built by local elite leaders. It is interesting to track what exactly is behind the elite officials in the city of Sampit in building these identity symbols and how political symbol culture plays a role in the development of the city of Sampit. The analytical tool used in this study is functional sociology where the emphasis of this study is on actors who provide change in society. The results of this study indicate that several values obsess over Cultural Symbol actions in Sampit, including; First, religious values, one of which orientates the cultural symbol policy is that the Sampit community is moved to worship their Lord and minimize criminal acts that used to occur frequently, such as wild speeding, theft and obscene acts. Secondly, art values, symbols used such as the dome and calligraphy of Asmaul Husnaand calligraphy of Allah and Muhammad's writings are expressions of the architectural art values possessed by the Sampit regent which used to beautify the city of Sampit. Third, Political Interest, every policy carried out by an elite certainly cannot be separated from political interests, the Sampit regent is no exception, which in this case is to perpetuate his power, bearing in mind that the regent is in power for two periods untill 2020

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to review Mohammed Abu Nimer thoughts on the field of conflict resolution, peace-building, and inter-religious dialogues. As a thinker and practitioner of conflict resolution, he built his work based on his intimate relationship with conflicts. To review his thoughts, this paper traced and observed his main ideas about conflict resolution based on his writings; books, journals, articles, etc. Thus, the findings show that Mohammed Abu Nimer draws upon his thoughts by referring to his religion, Islam. Therefore, Islam as a religion supports peace-building of civilization through its teaching to Muslims. Although Islam became the basis of his works on conflict resolution, it does not mean that he insists it to be used in conflict resolution. His idea is promoting religious dimension in conflict resolution which makes religion as a source of peace rather than a source of conflict. Then, he proves the limit on peace-building and inter-religious dialogue as a means to reach peace between two sides of a conflict. Therefore, peace-building activists should acknowledge and accommodate any possible ways to mediate the conflicting parties in order to make peace. Keywords:Religious Dimension, Conflict Resolution, Peace-building, Dialogue

Abstract

Like all great religions of the world, Christianity is a religion steeped in revelation. It tries to convince its followers that it was through the process of revelation that God made Himself known both in the Old and New Testaments, climaxing in the saving action of Jesus Christ. Although this is the starting point of Christian revelation, it would surprise many to know that it was only in the last five centuries that Christians started debating the issue and nature of revelation. In the present article, we shall critically examine how Catholic Christians started perceiving the notion of revelation from the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) as enshrined in the Constitution Dei Verbum of the Council and the issues that keep Catholics engaged with regard to it with particular focus upon the relation between Scripture and Tradition and the ensuing tensions.Key Words: Revelation, Scripture, Dei Verbum, Tradition, Scripture, Holy Spirit.
