Abstract

Manaqib is a familiar term at moslem society in Indonesia, especially at Nahdiyyin circle, and also for Banjarese moslem society (an ethnic in South Kalimantan, Borneo). Moreover, this manaqib is already become a tradition since several decades ago, but its still flare up and lively until now. Consistency of this manaqib tradition is not release from the influence of the charismatic scholars which always spread the call to continue to traditionalize the reading of manaqib, one of which is through their works in the field of this manaqib. Among them is where the classical ulama like Siti Khadijah al-Kubra, Shaikh Samman al-Madani, Shaikh Abdul Qadir al-Jailani and the local ulama are like the Shaikh Arsyad al-Banjari, Tuan Guru Kasyful Anwar, Tuan Guru M. Zaini Gani, and many others. With qualitative-anthropological studies, this study concludes that the writing of the books by the Banjar clerics was influenced by the strength of the tarekat teachings, especially the Naqsabandiyah and Sammaniyah orders. The influence is the emergence of public trust in the sacredness of the reading of the manaqib text itself, which is believed to bring various blessings such as avoiding calamity, expanding fortune, and being aware of various other purposes. Abstract

Following the stepped down of the New Order, the movements of establishing Islamic sharia in Indonesia has increased. Some of the organizations which promote Islamic sharia on their movements are Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia (MMI), Front Pembela Islam (FPI), and Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI). This paper observes the movements of HTI by using the perspective of public reason, especially the theories of John Rawls and Abdullah An-Naim. The results show that HTI should use more democratic methods in delivering its notion. As Indonesia is a democratic nation, creating the appropriate form of discussion and conversation would be an effective way in introducing Islamic sharia to the public. Later, the decision of accepting or rejecting the idea is in the hands of the public. Keywords:Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, Islamic sharia, and public reason

Abstract

In the history of Indonesia’s struggle to reach its independence, soldiers, scholars, and students had played great roles. Islamic figures such as Ulama’ and santri were among those heroes with notable contributions. Although many are not recognized regarding its huge numbers, some has nailed their names nationally for their influential political and religious thoughts. This article tries to explore the political and religious thoughts’ of Abdul Wahid Hasyim’s contribution to the establishment of Islam in Indonesia and the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia. His involvement since the Dutch colonial period, the Japanese occupation, until the independence, shows a santri’s struggle for national independence. The result shows that in the context of religion and politics, there are some interesting thoughts delivered by Abdul Wachid Hasyim. His writings on both aspects, religion and politics, predominantly reflect efforts to democratizing different mazhab which led to the modernization of Mazhabiyyah. Wahid Hasyim tried to democratize mazhabiyah differences which previously often cause conflicts and disintegration among Muslims. Wahid Hasyim believes that mazhabiyah differences cannot be obstacles for the unity of the Muslims. On the contrary, these differences can be reformulated to be transformed into a greater concept for the future of Islam. Moreover, he brought about the importance of reconciling political thoughts which can spread unity to the Muslims and Indonesia as a nation. Indonesian Muslims were no longer disintegrated simply due to political issues. He also struggled to reconcile political conflicts involving Muslims and non-Muslims in Indonesia. KeywordsDemocratization, Mazhabiyyah, Reconciliation of politics

Abstract

Segregations caused by religions may diversely be responded by a group of people. Being partly perceived as a subject for conducting dialogue, religion may also be considered as a segregating factor that shall better be diminished. Religion, for some groups of people, tends also to be seen as contradictory to the nature of science and toleration. To this extent, the notion of engaging the segregated groups of people can also be related to the concept of Asutosh Varshney in terms of promoting civic engagement through social media with a different setting. Although the movement is virtual community based, the promotion of NoReligion is also intended for giving another view in the state realm. Keywords: NoReligion, atheism, engagement, segregation, dismissal of religion

Abstract

Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) has recently been in a global spotlight as it is considered to cause a new cluster of Covid-19 cases to occur. According to some news reported by various media, Tablighi Jamaat remained in their ignorance of the pandemic. This may partly result from the way of interpreting religious texts. This article aims to discuss the views of the Temboro Tablighi Jamaat, Magetan, East Java about Covid-19, the factors that shape their understanding, and their religious activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. This article shows that the followers of Tablighi Jamaat in Temboro, Magetan, East Java, view diseases from the point of view of sharia (exoteric path) and haqiqa (mystcal truth). From the point of view of haqiqa, they see the disease as something that naturally comes from Allah. Meanwhile, adopting the point of view of Sharia, they try to replicate the way the Prophet Muhammad when he dealt with illnesses, which is documented in the hadith about the plague (tha’un). This reflects two reception models, namely exegetical reception and functional reception. This understanding then changed the TJ followers’ way of conducting their activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Their implementing health protocols and setting reasonable restrictions on the activities they usually perform in normal conditions. Therefore, this article also denies the statements of media about the ignorance of TJ followers in Temboro as to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Criticisms on the Orientalists’ Shubha and the Arguments on the Authenticity of the Qur’an Mustaqim, Abdul

Abstract

This article reconsiders the shubha (misgrounded conceit) proposed by the orientalists. The first shubhais about the revelation of the Qur’an; the second shubhais about the differences of qira’at (recitations or readings) claimed by the orientalists as proof that the Quran is not entirely authentic for the existence of false readings. The third shubha is about the authorship and the relationship of the Qur’an with previous divine books (Tawrat and Bible) showing that the Qur’an is a plagiarism work of The Prophet Muhammad or the notion of influence or borrowings from Judeo-Christian tradition. Employing the theological-historical approach, this article argues that, firstly, that the Qur’an is a Divine Revelation is evident from the linguistic style in which it very often uses direct speech to Muhammad, such as “Say, (O Muhammad to the mankind)”, and from the criticism posed by the Qur’an to Muhammad as the recipient of the revelation. Historically, the process of the writing of the Qur’an has started since the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad and was based on reliable sources, either oral or written, supported by oaths from witnesses from the companions affirming the reliability of the existing records of the Qur’an during that period. Secondly, concerning the variation of the readings, if they are transmitted in mutawatir, they are the accepted readings, because theologically the Qur’an was revealed with differences of readings of sab’at ahruf, in which there are a lot of hikma and there is no contradiction. Finally, concerning the similarities (either the content or dictions) between the Qur’an and previous divine books, the notion of plagiarism is not relevant; it suggests the consistent and reliable chains of Divine Revelation between the messengers, making they are not in contradiction to the revelation received by the Prophet Muhammad (Q.S. Al-Nisaʾ[4]: 163-164). From the historical-philological perspective, the similarities of concepts or content between the Qur’an and Bible indicate that the Qur’an is in dialogue with the textual discourses found in its environment. It is reasonable because the Qur’an was not revealed in a vacuum context.

Abstract

The study examines the symbolic meaning of the letter Alif and the esoterism teaching in it, as reflected in Sosrokartono’s calligraphy and Insan al-Kamil’s concept of Al-Jilli.  The purpose of this study is to present the philosophical similarities and differences between the Middle Eastern Sufis and the Indonesian Sufis, which are found in different mediums. The study used library research and hermeneutical approach. The data were analysed using text interpretation from Jorge Garcia and esoteric symbolism from Ferdinand de Saussure. The findings of this study include: first, the letter Alif in the calligraphy holds the meaning of philosophical sufism that aligns with the concept of Insan Al-Kamil by Abdul Karim Al-Jilli. Second, the letter Alif for both Sosrokartono and Al-Jilli holds three dimensional meanings; oneness, strength, and wisdom. This research enriches the repertoire of philosophical Sufism by presenting the meaning of material objects in the form of calligraphy art.

Abstract

This article examines Mehdi Golshani thoughts on the integration of knowledge, which is integration between sacred sciences and secular sciences during the Covid-19 pandemic. The debates that have arisen in the community between religious people and scientists regarding Covid-19 can be resolved if they are put together in a science forum. For this reason, Mehdi Golshani came up with a new idea that was different from the previous Muslim scientific ideas. Mehdi Golshani's solution regarding the debate between religion and science is not deconstruction, reconstruction, or reconciliation. However, to find answers of questions in society about the contributions of religionists and scientists is a method of integration with the Islamic science formula. The conclusion of this article is that science and Islam are an integral part that cannot be separated or even disputed. Science desperately needs divine and religious entities to be filled with a scientific dimension.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the religious patterns of the Jemaat Ahmadiyya in Indonesia, with a focus of the study in the villages of Gondrong, Banten and Manislor, Kuningan, West Java, especially about the views related to religious and state relations, and their existence as a 'minority group' in Indonesia. Based on a phenomenological approach, wherein the data is obtained by involving the researcher directly in the social process of the study subject, the results of this study show that the relationship between religion and state is understood by Ahmadiya in the framework of the concept of Khilafah; a concept that is believed to be inevitable, as a form of continuous moral guidance from the prophetic system. But in term of operationalization is not oriented towards political practice and does not clash with state ideology. Khilafah is understood only in the context of religion, spirituality, and other religious rites. As a minority group living in pluralistic community culture, the Ahmadiyya sees that the various cases of violence that have befallen their followers are a form of manifestation of the maturity level of the Indonesian people in responding to differences. So, the diversity that exists is still a trigger for potential conflict

Abstract

The article is a research on entrepreneur-based pesantren(Islamic boarding school). The two main questions proposed in this article include; what characters have the students been accustomed to and how to internalize those characters to the students? So far, pesantrenhas been stereotyped as an institution that creates unemployment. The society considers pesantrengraduates as competent, and even prominent, in socio-religious field but are lacking in the creative economy field and the utilization of natural resources. PesantrenAnwarus Sholihin Purwokerto, in this context, were striving to bridge the competency gap. This research found that PesantrenAnwarus Sholihin Purwokerto has internalized entrepreneurial character through education and training, entrepreneurship motivation, and practices in production and marketing. Processed food products, including fruits and vegetables, were made from plants harvested in the farm. Along with these activities, pesantreninstilled the entrepreneurship characters to the students, including honesty, self-motivation, teamwork, risk-taking, and creative-innovative skill. Entrepreneur-based pesantren can provide both material and moral contribution to the society. Apart from being economically independent to support the students’ needs, pesantrencan also create entrepreneurial characters that will make the students proud of being its graduates, and in turn, help them becomepersistent individuals in the future.
