Abstract

One of the habits of mind developed in the 21st century is critical thinking skills. This study aims to describe the increase in students' critical thinking skills after learning using the approach of science, technology, religion, engineering, art, and mathematics (STREAM) on ecosystem materials. This research was conducted in one of the public high schools in Bandung Regency with a pre-experiment method whit one group pretest posttest design. The research sample was 35 students who were selected through purposive sampling technique. The instrument used is in the form of test questions that refer to the indicators of critical thinking skills as follows: giving simple explanations, building basic skills, concluding, providing further explanations and developing strategies and tactics. The data analysis technique used is to perform statistical tests. Based on the results of the study, the average value of the N-Gain critical thinking skills of students in classes using the STREAM approach was 67% in the medium category. The highest increase is in the indicator of setting strategy and tactics by 67% in the medium category. The lowest increase is the indicator providing a simple explanation of 49% in the medium category. The results of the study indicate that the STREAM approach can improve students' critical thinking skills

Abstract

Biology learning outcomes are related to several factors, namely cognitive anxiety and habits of mind. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between cognitive anxiety, habits of mind, and biology learning outcomes. The method of research applied  was correlational research with a stratified random sampling technique. The population of this study is all class XII students at four senior high schools in Bandung with a total sample of 145 students. The instruments used were questionnaires and Biology study results report documents. Habits of mind in this study refer to Costa and Kallick’s 16 categories of habits of mind as many as 50 questionnaire coverage. Students' cognitive anxiety was measured through a cognitive anxiety questionnaire which consists of 27 statement items based on Cassady and Johnson's Cognitive Anxiety Test. The learning outcomes were obtained from the scores of grade XII National Exam Practice. The instruments were tested for validity, reliability, and readability. It was found that there was a positive relationship between biology learning outcomes and cognitive anxiety (r = 0,045, α <0.025 ) as well as between habits of mind and biology learning outcomes (r= 0,326, α <0.025). No correlation was observed between habits of mind and cognitive anxiety. It can be summarized that habits of mind and cognitive anxiety have a positive relationship with biology learning outcomes. These findings indicate that biology learning outcomes are closely related to cognitive anxiety and habits of mind. Finally, we discuss the relationship of cognitive anxiety and the habits of mind to biology learning outcomes and provide suggestions for further work.

Abstract

Students’ limited learning resources result in low scientific literacy ability. Therefore, additional interesting learning resources are needed to improve the students’ scientific literacy skills. One of the appropriate learning resources is BioMagz with an approach to socio-scientific issues. This research focuses on the material of environmental changes. This study aims to: (1) develop BioMagz with an approach to socio-scientific issues to improve the scientific literacy of environmental changes and (2) apply BioMagz with an approach to socio-scientific issues to increase the scientific literacy of environmental change materials. This development research employed the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, Implementation, and evaluation) and was conducted at SMAN 1 Kadipaten. The experts’ validation and students’ responses show that the BioMagz with an approach to socio-scientific issues has a score of more than 86%. It concludes that BioMagz with an approach to socio-scientific issues is very feasibly implemented in learning. The hypothesis test on the scientific literacy ability variable has obtained a significant value of less than 0.005. This score indicates that H0 is rejected and the use of BioMagz with an approach to socio-scientific issues in learning can increase students' scientific literacy skills.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the community's original knowledge in the process of making potato dodol into scientific knowledge according to the halal criteria of a product determined by the halal product guarantee system. The research method used is descriptive qualitative based on ethnoscience with the scope of examination including document analysis, interviews and documentation. Data collection is done directly to respondents (business actors) by purposive sampling. The data obtained were analyzed according to the criteria for the halal product assurance system which includes: commitment and responsibility, materials, halal product processes, products and monitoring and evaluation. Data analysis is carried out with traceability according to the halal document of a product. The results showed that the process of making potato dodol according to community knowledge  can be transformed into scientific knowledge was acquired and developed from generation to generation. The stage of start from preparing ingredients, boiling, milling, mixing the dought with other ingredients, kneading, printing and cutting, drying, packaging and labeling. It can be concluded that the procedure for making potato dodol  developed through generations is comply with Islamic law, star from use of tools, production facilities, packaging systems, storage, distribution that are free of non-halal materials which meet standards and can be consumed by the public.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain an overview of physics learning on the topic of fluid material with an Arduino-based engineering design process (EDP) to improve students' problem-solving abilities. This study used a quasi-experimental research method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects in this study were students of class XI MIPA by taking two groups of subjects using a purposive sampling technique. The sample for the experimental class was 36 people and the control class was 36 people, so the total number of research subjects was 72 people. The learning implementation instrument was carried out using an observation sheet. The results of the ability to solve problems are measured using a description test which includes indicators of problem-solving abilities. Student responses using a Likert scale. The results of the data analysis showed that the average N-Gain achievement was in the medium category and the results of the independent test showed a significant difference in increasing problem-solving skills. Most of the students gave positive responses to learning with Arduino-based EDP, felt happy and motivated, provided benefits, every process undertaken by students provided challenges in solving the problems they faced so that fluid learning using the Arduino-based engineering design process (EDP) stages was able to improve students' ability to solve problems.

Abstract

This study was intended to analyze the effect of the ethnoscience-based Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on scientific thinking skills in reproductive system material. This research is a quasi-experimental design in the form of a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design. This research was conducted at class XI MIPA students for the 2022/2023 academic year in Sumedang. The research instruments used were pretest-posttest sheets and questionnaires. The data collection technique used in this study included a test of 15 essay questions and a questionnaire. The data analysis technique used is the normality test, independent sample t-test, and N-Gain test. The results showed that the students' scientific skills increased significantly after applying the ethnoscience-based learning model on the material of reproductive system. The independent sample t-test obtained p-value = 0.000 <0.05, which was significantly different between the posttest and pretest scores. N-Gain also obtained an average of 0.75 which indicates an increase in students' scientific skills in high category. The results of students' responses to learning with the ethnoscience-based PBL model on students' scientific thinking skills were included in very good category with an overall percentage of 82.5%. This study concluded that students' scientific thinking experienced an increase after learning through the ethnoscience-based PBL model on the reproductive system material.

Abstract

Learning based on local potential is a curriculum demand contained in the National Standards of Higher Education. One of the local potentials in the South Sulawesi region is Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park with high biodiversity. There are 709 species of plants and among them, there are 43 types of Ficus plants that are key species in the area. This research aims to develop a plant morphology atlas based on the local potential of Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park as botanical teaching materials in universities. Development adapts the stages of the ADDIE model. Research data in the form of qualitative data and quantitative data obtained from material experts, teaching materials development experts, education practitioners, and learners. The data obtained is then analyzed using the validity percentage formula. The validation of products with a value of 97.6% indicates that the plant morphology atlas of material aspects includes valid criteria. The taught material development apex obtained a value of 99.6% which indicates a very valid criterion. Based on the results of validation from education practitioners which is 76.7% and includes quite valid criteria. The results of the trial in a small group obtained a value of 84% with excellent validity. In conclusion, the atlas developed valid and practice as teaching material. So, this atlas can be used as a teaching material for supplements, especially in plant morphology courses in universities.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the trend of ethnoscience development research in science learning in Indonesia. As classified as the qualitative research, this study used a content analysis approach. A systematic literature review technique was done to analyze the ethnoscience approach in science learning, used 73 reviewed articles, from 2017 to March 2022. The results shows: (a) Integrated research topics is the most dominant ethnoscience approach used to develop learning Modules with 4D research designs,(b) Learning outcomes are integrated with ethnoscience, especially for scientific literacy, critical thinking skill, creative thinking skill and problem-solving. (c). The ethnoscience-integrated learning model is dominated by project-based learning and discovery learning models at the high school level with biology subjects. The ethnoscience approach in science learning  preservice the local culture as the attempt to develope the students’ scientific literacy  beside reintroducing the culture.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to learn more about the level of conceptual understanding and academic competition among students studying chemistry material in thermochemistry by utilizing Chemlovers as a media and student body. Penelitian is carried out using a combined method of sequential explanation and data collection in two phases, namely quantitative and qualitative phases. Approximately 144 students from kelas XI of the MIPA SMA Negeri 10 Semarang participated in the survey. Understanding of concepts and demonstration of competency with regard to thermochemistry material was conducted using a three-tier multiple-choice test. Students’ disagreement with the media's use of Chemlovers comes from their angry response. The study's findings indicate that the percentage of respondents who understood the concept well was very high, with a score of about 66,74% (top category), and a score of 7,45% (low category). The level of student mastery of thermochemistry material, 80.56% of students fulfilled the minimal completeness criteria, with the highest score of 92.50, the lowest at 58.67, and an average of 83.37. Based on the results of this study, it can be said that media like Chemlovers efficiently helps students comprehend ideas and hone analytical abilities linked to thermochemistry. Respondents' comments on the utility of this android-based media were generally favorable.

Abstract

Practicum not only advanced skills to use the practicum tools, but also basic skills, known as science generic skills, which emphasize students’ ability to understand, identify,  and solve presented problems. This study aims to analyze students’ activities in animal respiration practicum, investigate their generic science skills after conducting the animal respiration practicum, and describe their responses to guided inquiry-based animal respiration practicum. This study employed the pretest-posttest control group designs. The data were collected using tests, observations, and questionnaires. Afterward, the collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. The results showed that the students’ generic skills in guided inquiry-based animal respiration practicum are categorized as high shown in their learning activities. The students who apply the inquiry model and students who apply the conventional model have significantly different improvements in generic science skills. Moreover, the students very positively respond to the guided inquiry-based animal respiration practicum. This study concludes that the practicum has allowed students to understand the actual learning process.
