Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Chantal V. Johnson’s Post-Traumatic (2022), focusing on the main character, Vivian, through the DSM-5 framework. The objective is to examine how Vivian’s unresolved childhood trauma manifests in PTSD symptoms and how these align with the DSM-5 criteria. Using a qualitative research method, the analysis reviews key passages from the novel that depict PTSD-related behaviors, including flashbacks, emotional detachment, avoidance, and self-destructive tendencies. These passages are interpreted in relation to the DSM-5, highlighting how Vivian’s traumatic past continues to influence her psychological state, relationships, and coping mechanisms. The findings reveal that Vivian experiences chronic sleep disturbances, paranoia, hypervigilance, and unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and extreme dieting as forms of maladaptive coping. Her unresolved trauma intensifies these symptoms, affecting her ability to maintain stable personal and professional relationships. The study concludes that the portrayal of PTSD in Post-Traumatic (2022) strongly aligns with DSM-5 criteria, showing how trauma affects emotional regulation, self-perception, and social functioning. Vivian’s substance abuse and self-destructive behaviors serve as coping mechanisms, illustrating the lasting effects of trauma on her mental well-being. By analyzing these dynamics, the study emphasizes the importance of structured psychological frameworks like the DSM-5 in understanding the complexities of trauma in literary characters, providing deeper insights into how PTSD shapes identity and behavior, and illustrating the ongoing cycles of PTSD caused by unresolved trauma.

Abstract

Technology integration in education has become a major concern in modern curriculum development. English teachers play an important role in the successful implementation of technology in the classroom, and their attitude towards technology is a key factor influencing how well it is integrated. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between English teachers' attitudes towards technology and the level of technology integration in teaching, focusing on English teachers in 17 schools spread across four districts. The study utilized a mixed method approach involving both qualitative and quantitative data collection. Qualitative data was collected through in-depth interviews with English teachers, while quantitative data was obtained through a questionnaire distributed to all English teachers in the schools. Data analysis was conducted using triangulation techniques to ensure the reliability and validity of the research results. In addition, this study also measured how English teachers' attitudes towards technology relate to the use of technology in daily teaching. The results show that there is a significant relationship between English teachers' attitudes towards technology and the level of technology integration in the classroom. English teachers who have positive attitudes towards technology tend to be more active in integrating technology into their teaching, while English teachers with more skeptical attitudes tend to make less effective use of technology. The study concludes that in order to improve technology integration in teaching, efforts need to be made to change English teachers' negative attitudes towards technology through adequate training and support.

Abstract

This research explores the use of figurative language in William Shakespeare's sonnets through an analysis. In this study, there is a comprehensive analysis of six selected sonnets, namely: Sonnet 127, Sonnet 130, Sonnet 131, Sonnet 132, Sonnet 133, and Sonnet 139. The purpose of this study is to explore how figurative language is used in William Shakespeare's sonnets by using Perrine's theory and to reveal the techniques used by Shakespeare to enrich his poems. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, identifying and categorizing 53 examples of figurative language in the selected sonnets. The technique of data collection is by reading the sonnets thoroughly, noting in detail the figurative language present and connecting with the theory. Ten of Perrine's twelve theories were found, namely simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, hyperbole, irony, paradox, and apostrophe. The findings of this study show the dominant use of metaphor and personification, complemented using synecdoche, metonymy, hyperbole, and other devices. The way Shakespeare uses figurative language makes his poems seem more vivid and evokes deep emotions, especially for the readers. Shakespeare's poetry and figurative language have an enduring power in literature and offer valuable insights to be analyzed more deeply.

Abstract

The Sudan crisis is an important topic that reflects global humanitarian challenges, yet there is a gap in the literature regarding media representations of this issue. This study aims to uncover how two media outlets, royanews.tv and Aljazeera, portray the famine crisis in Sudan, with a focus on the role of the United States and its geopolitical impact. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collection techniques through text analysis of two news reports. The main findings show that the media plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions by using attention-grabbing terms such as "humanitarian catastrophe." The resulting discourse reflects power relations, where media narratives can benefit or harm certain actors in the existing political context. In addition, there are hidden ideologies in the use of language that support or challenge power, in line with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory. The conclusion of this study confirms that language in media discourse not only shapes public perception, but also reflects and maintains power relations, and influences social and political narratives. This research demonstrates the important role of the media in international responses to humanitarian crises.

Abstract

A webcomic is a series of images sequenced and combined to form a story that can be accessed online. Onomatopoeia is used to build the story and give the comic a more dramatic visual effect. This research aims to explore the onomatopoeia contained in the Mickey Mouse Adventures webcomics edition one. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The data were collected through observation methods with several stages, such as reading the comics, recording the types of onomatopoeia found, and analyzing the meaning of the onomatopoeia. The theory used to determine the type of onomatopoeia is the theory of Thomas and Clara (2004) while analyzing the meaning of onomatopoeic words is based on the theory of Thomas (1995). The results showed that there are 4 types of onomatopoeia with 66 data found from all types of onomatopoeia in webcomics, including: “sound made by human” with 26 words (39%), “miscellaneous sounds” found 24 words (36%), “calls of animals” 11 words (17%), lastly “sound of nature” for 5 words (8%). The type of onomatopoeia sound made by human beings is the most dominant one used in webcomics. The meaning of onomatopoeia in webcomics is included in abstract and contextual meanings

Abstract

This research aims at investigating how lesson study can be effectively utilized to support differentiated instruction in English language classrooms. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design to gain an in-depth understanding of how lesson study can support differentiated instruction in English language classrooms. The subjects were 12 English teachers, 4 English lecturers and students participating in the lesson study process. This research used purposive sampling technique in selecting participants based on specific criteria, such as teachers, lecturers, and students experienced in differentiated instruction and engage in the lesson study process. It was conducted in SMK Negeri 1 Palopo with two cycles. The research procedure consisting of four: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Over two cycles, the implementation of different process differentiation techniques revealed valuable insights. In the first cycle, the use of process differentiation through media choice allowed students autonomy in their learning but highlighted the challenges faced by lower-ability students. Heterogeneous grouping led to passive participation among weaker students, as they relied on their higher-ability peers, and the freedom to choose media did not fully address their learning needs. In the second cycle, process differentiation was enhanced by introducing homogeneous groups and worksheets tailored to students' abilities, alongside increased teacher assistance for the basic group. This more structured approach resulted in significant improvements in student engagement, particularly among lower-ability students who benefitted from focused support. The advanced and intermediate groups also thrived with tasks matched to their skill levels, demonstrating the success of ability-based differentiation.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a pedagogical intervention using the IELTS Speaking Part question framework to improve speaking skills among students in the English Education Program at IAIN Parepare. The intervention introduced most students to the IELTS Speaking format for the first time, focusing on familiarizing them with speaking techniques that align with international standards. A pre-experimental design was employed, with a one-group pretest-posttest method. The research involved 57 students from the PBI 2022 cohort, with a sample of 15 students (Class PBI4C) selected through cluster purposive sampling. The primary instrument was a speaking test structured around the IELTS framework, with scores measured on a 0-100 scale to allow for detailed interval analysis. Data analysis, conducted in Microsoft Excel, revealed a significant improvement, as the average score rose from 63.7 (pretest) to 83.17 (posttest). A t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference, with a t-value of 5.91 exceeding the t-table value of 2.14 at a 0.05 significance level. These results suggest that using the IELTS-based framework effectively enhanced students’ speaking skills, providing valuable exposure to international testing standards.
