Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate integrative-prismatic-based interdisciplinary teaching materials for an error analysis course in the English department at a higher education institution. The research employed a three-phase method: (1) design and development of teaching materials, (2) implementation, and (3) data analysis. Participants included 60 English department students, selected through purposive sampling to ensure diverse representation in terms of gender, linguistic background, and academic proficiency. The instruments used were pre- and post-tests, classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and student artifacts such as assignments and reflective journals. Data were collected over a 10-week period, during which the teaching materials were integrated into the course curriculum. Quantitative data from pre- and post-tests were analyzed using paired sample t-tests to assess improvements in students' error analysis skills, while qualitative data from observations, interviews, and focus groups were analyzed thematically to identify changes in engagement, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning. The findings revealed significant improvements in students’ abilities to identify, categorize, and correct errors using interdisciplinary approaches, as well as increased engagement and development of critical thinking skills. These results suggest that the integrative-prismatic framework is effective in fostering deeper learning and adaptability among students. The study implies that such interdisciplinary materials can be valuable for curriculum development in higher education, but further research is needed to validate these findings across different courses and contexts to establish broader applicability and effectiveness.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore lecturers' attitudes and the challenges faced in teaching foreign cultural values in English language learning. This research employed descriptive qualitative and hermeneutic phenomenological designs in which the research instruments used were documentation, observation, and interview. This research involved lecturers of the English Literature study program of one private university in Indonesia. The results of the data analysis showed that the lecturers' attitudes towards teaching foreign cultural values in English language learning varied. However, in general, the majority of lecturers realize the importance of integrating foreign cultural values (in this case English culture) as part of English language teaching and choose to modify materials about conflicting English cultural values. They argued that providing information about foreign cultural values that conflict with local culture is still important, but it should be accompanied by reinforcement that these values do not follow Indonesian culture. The challenges reported by the lecturers included the difficulty of finding sufficiently representative and up-to-date reference sources, the use of authentic materials that require lecturers to deliver content that contains negative cultural values or is contrary to local culture, and the strengthening of national values and local culture so that students are not easily exposed to foreign cultural values. From the student side, the challenges were the lack of motivation, learning ethos, and English skills when understanding English-language reference sources. Future researchers are advised to expand the study of the impact of using authentic materials containing foreign cultural values on student perceptions and attitudes.

Abstract

This study reported the implementation of synchronous and asynchronous classes at Bintang Nusantara Learning Centre, focusing on the use of the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method to develop students' speaking skills. This research was conducted as a case study, employing qualitative methods such as observations, interviews, and document analysis to gather in-depth data on the teaching and learning processes. The learning process was structured into three interconnected stages: pre-teaching, whilst teaching, and post-teaching, with each stage encompassing various activities designed to enhance student engagement and language proficiency. Despite the careful planning and execution of these activities, both teachers and students faced a range of technical and non-technical challenges throughout the learning process in both online and offline settings. Technical issues included unstable internet connections, inadequate devices (software and hardware), and varying levels of technological proficiency among both teachers and students , which disrupted the flow of online classes. Non-technical challenges involved a lack of motivation and engagement from students, as well as difficulties in replicating the interactive nature of CLT in a virtual environment. However, teachers and students collaborated to find solutions, such as employing alternative communication tools, adjusting lesson plans to better suit the online format, and providing additional support and encouragement to maintain student motivation. In offline classes, issues related to health protocols and classroom management were addressed by implementing smaller class sizes and ensuring compliance with safety measures. These efforts were critical in mitigating the impact of the challenges, allowing the teaching methodology to remain effective in both online and offline contexts.

Abstract

This research examines the educational programs at an elementary school in Batam City, Indonesia, incorporating both the national and Cambridge curricula. The goal is to identify key elements that improve the quality and efficiency of education. Data was gathered through observations, interviews with three English teachers, and documentation using a qualitative case study method. The study utilized an observation checklist and interviews modified from earlier research. The results show nine key components essential for successful teaching and learning: engagement, interaction, motivation and goals, diversity of approaches, professionalism and support, teamwork, organization and response, group projects and communication, and flexibility. Various methods were found to improve the quality of learning through engagement. Dynamic exchanges in interactivity enhanced participation and promoted ongoing improvement. Student engagement was fueled by motivation and clear objectives, as various teaching techniques accommodated different learning preferences. Professionalism, combined with guidance, involved a mix of firmness and empathy to assist students with their academic and emotional needs. Teamwork between educators and stakeholders enhanced teaching techniques. Effective planning and constructive feedback led to optimal learning outcomes. Collaborative tasks encouraged the development of teamwork and problem-solving abilities within groups. Ultimately, teachers were able to effectively address curriculum changes and student needs due to their adaptability. To sum up, the research highlights how integrating these factors is crucial in establishing a vibrant and supportive learning atmosphere, necessary for students to thrive in a globalized academic setting.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out students’ perceptions on using Google Classroom in learning English at Madrasah Aliyah Hasanah Pekanbaru. By applying the descriptive-quantitative method, the subjects of this study were all grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Hasanah Pekanbaru with the total of 76 students. The research instrument was a questionnaire adapted from previous research by Hidayat et al (2009), Shaharanee et al (2016), Astuti, T., & Indriani, L. (2020), and Salam, U. (2020). The researcher used IBM SPSS Statistics 25 to analyze the data. Findings showed that several factors influence the students' online learning process, namely, ease of access, usefulness, communication and interaction, ease of use, and satisfaction. Most students are classified into the “high” classification of perception with a total mean score of 3.87. It indicates that most students gave positive responses toward using Google Classroom in learning English. The students agreed that Google Classroom is suitable to use continuously in learning English because it is helpful and useful application, easy to use, have many interesting features and satisfied to learning English. This research implies that Google Classroom can be considered as one of the alternative learning platforms that can be used by schools during pandemic situations and other emergency situations to learn English.

Abstract

Slang is an informal type of language often used in everyday communication, especially on social media. Meanwhile, X, a popular social media platform, features many comments that frequently use slang words in its threads. Thus, this study aimed to classify the types of slang word formation and the functions of slang words found in comments on X. The theoretical framework for this study included Yule's (2010) theory on types of slang words and Zhou and Fan's (2013) theory on the functions of slang expressions. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from comments by users on Elon Musk's X account, uploaded by Elon Musk from July to August 2023. The findings identified several types of word formation: 1) clipping (7 data), 2) derivation (6 data), 3) acronyms (4 data), 4) borrowing (4 data), 5) coinage (2 data), 6) compounding (1 data), and 7) multiple processes (1 data). Among the types of word formation analyzed, clipping was the most common type of slang word formation found, with 7 examples identified. The main function of slang words in these comments was to express user’s feelings, especially their disappointment with the rebranding of Twitter to X. This suggests that users use slang and word creation techniques in a variety of ways, demonstrating linguistic innovation and originality in online communication. Abstract

This study explored pragmatic markers (PMs) used by college students in casual interactions. Understanding the prevalence, range, frequency, diversity, social context and functions of PMs, were the goals of the study. A qualitative descriptive method was used to examine nine student discussions. Participants were chosen at random from the Faculty of Education, Zuwila, Sebha University, Libya. Conversations in casual environments, such as residences and cafeterias, were discreetly recorded. PMs were found and grouped according to their function and social environment using thematic analysis. The results of the investigation showed that PMs were highly prevalent in all areas, including social interactions, agreement, and admiration. Pupils used a wide spectrum of PMs; the social milieu affected the frequency and variety of use. A greater variety of PMs were utilized in informal contexts for relationship development, emotional expression, and social navigation. The study's overall findings emphasize how important PMs are to student communication. These indicators are more than just filler words; they are vital resources that help students interact with others, communicate clearly, and form relationships. This study adds to a more comprehensive understanding of PM usage in regular student conversations.

Abstract

English Proficiency Test is a test that must be taken by students as one of the graduation requirements. With the low scores in the Listening Comprehension section, efforts are needed to improve students' listening skills in taking the English Proficiency Test. The purpose of this study is to improve students' listening skills through podcasts, so that they can help students get optimal scores. The method applied in this study is by conducting classroom action research which is one of the problem-solving strategies that utilizes real actions and the process of developing abilities in detecting and solving problems. The results of this study indicate that there is. The increase in the average score from 56.67 in Cycle I to 63.125 in Cycle II shows that the learning process implemented using podcast media has provided quite significant results in improving students' listening skills.

Abstract

Abstract This study is based on the linguistic expressions used by (NH) addressed to (NA) which allegedly contain insult-type hate speech on Instagram. These linguistic expressions were brought into the legal domain and reported to the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigations, Sub-Directorate V of Cybercrime, Regional Police of South Sulawesi and categorized as a complaint-based offense. This study employs forensic linguistic investigation with the support of cognitive linguistics, aiming to analyze the framing, perspectives, and mental spaces within the linguistic expressions of the reported party (NH) and to determine whether these expressions constitute hate speech in the form of insults. This is a descriptive qualitative study using secondary data obtained from Evidence (E) and Investigation and Interrogation Reports from investigators at the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigations (Ditreskrimsus) of the Regional Police of South Sulawesi, Makassar City. This study reveals six types of frames used by NH to insult NA, including the frame of Islam, sin, prostitute, insult, threat, and insinuation. Based on perspective analysis, three viewpoints were identified: the perspective of the reported party (NH), the complainant (NA), and the investigators (police). The reported party (NH) engaged in hate speech in the form of insults by utilizing perspectives based on identity (religious and personal identity), accusations, and comparisons. Mental space analysis was conducted on four linguistic expressions, yielding two concepts from the blending of mental spaces: the concept of a prostitute and the concept of contradiction. Based on these analyses along with the utterances of seven pieces of evidence with (14) linguistic expressions, it is concluded that the linguistic expressions used by (NH) against (NA) have been proven to violate the Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE) Law Article 27 Paragraph (3) of 2016 and the Indonesian Criminal Code on defamation, Articles 310 and 311. Abstract

This study investigates the integration of Eco-English Language Teaching (Eco-ELT) within the English study program curriculum through the ADDIE instructional design model. The primary objective is to develop and evaluate English teaching materials that enhance both language proficiency and environmental awareness among students. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study follows the ADDIE model's five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data were collected via observations, interviews, and document analysis to assess the effectiveness of the Eco-ELT materials. Findings reveal that incorporating Eco-ELT significantly improves students' engagement, English language skills, and environmental consciousness. The study also highlights challenges, such as the need for comprehensive teacher training and resource constraints. The research underscores Eco-ELT as a promising approach for integrating environmental education into language teaching, with implications for English teaching material development and further exploration of sustainable educational practices.
