Abstract

To better prepare students for the demands of the twenty-first century, the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia incorporates character education into a range of educational courses. English as a foreign language, teachers can select the chosen learning approach for their students—which might require using critical thinking skills—by using digital interactive media like Edpuzzle. This study's goal was to evaluate how digital interactive media like Edpuzzle were used in online English as a foreign language (EFL) classes and how it affected the students' critical thinking abilities. In order to help students enhance their critical thinking abilities in the context of problem-solving related to various learning styles, this project intends to create digital media based on character values. The 4-D approach was used in this product development study (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). The digital interactive media Edpuzzle obtained a total average score of 3.60 based on the validation from the material expert and a score of 3.50 based on the evidence from the media expert, indicating that the study's findings are correct. 92% of the eighth-graders reactions were positive, per the assessments. Active learning during the teaching process also causes the students to feel positive emotions. Students can also develop their ability to think critically by speaking out in class and having meaningful debates with their classmates

Abstract

Language learning styles and strategies have been developing for several years as one of the crucial parts of language learning. Metacognitive techniques have been looked into as aids for improving pupils' reading comprehension. The metacognitive strategy instruction should be integrated with students' different learning styles to help them be more effective and autonomous learners. Even though learning styles are crucial to language acquisition, few studies have examined the relationship between perceptual language learning and Indonesian students' use of metacognitive reading strategies. This study examined how metacognitive techniques were used when academic reading from a visually oriented standpoint to fill the gap. An open-ended questionnaire was employed in a descriptive quantitative study. There were fifteen experimental and fifteen students in the experimental class, and the data were analyzed quantitatively. They used a reading comprehension test adopted from the Baron TOEFL reading section to achieve the pre-test and the post-test scores. The statistical results showed a significant interaction in metacognitive strategy with a visually oriented style in pre and post-test with a p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05). The results of this study will persuade English teachers to provide metacognitive reading methods through suitable instructions and supervision so that students may put them into practice and advance their reading comprehension.

Abstract

The main aim of this research is to investigate how secondary school students understand the usefulness of social media in English language learning. The research design used in this research is quantitative research, and data was collected through closed surveys and given to 31 students from SMKN 1 Bantul, Yogyakarta. The questionnaire contains 18 items representing the cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions of social media use in ELT. Based on these findings, students generally have a positive attitude toward using social media to learn English. By providing interesting and easily accessible content, social media is useful in improving students' English skills. Listening and reading skills can be significantly improved by using platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. These results suggest that the diverse sources of stimulation and conducive interactive contextual practices offered by social media support learners' needs while presenting challenges with exposure to non-standard language or distractions that may occur during its use.

Abstract

This research examines the enjoyment and anxiety of learning English experienced by junior high school students in rural areas. This research uses quantitative methods, with data collection using a questionnaire distributed to 54 class VIII students. The findings show that a positive classroom environment and a friendly teacher who always provides support can increase students' enjoyment in learning English. On the other hand, student anxiety stems from self-doubt about their abilities and fear of negative evaluation. Statistical analysis, including independent sample t test, revealed significant differences between levels of enjoyment and anxiety. This makes teachers implement teaching strategies that can reduce anxiety, such as providing emotional support and using varied teaching methods. This study focuses on understanding emotional factors in language learning and provides practical recommendations for improving the quality of education in school environments, especially in rural areas.

Abstract

Technology integration in education has become a major concern in modern curriculum development. English teachers play an important role in the successful implementation of technology in the classroom, and their attitude towards technology is a key factor influencing how well it is integrated. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between English teachers' attitudes towards technology and the level of technology integration in teaching, focusing on English teachers in 17 schools spread across four districts. The study utilized a mixed method approach involving both qualitative and quantitative data collection. Qualitative data was collected through in-depth interviews with English teachers, while quantitative data was obtained through a questionnaire distributed to all English teachers in the schools. Data analysis was conducted using triangulation techniques to ensure the reliability and validity of the research results. In addition, this study also measured how English teachers' attitudes towards technology relate to the use of technology in daily teaching. The results show that there is a significant relationship between English teachers' attitudes towards technology and the level of technology integration in the classroom. English teachers who have positive attitudes towards technology tend to be more active in integrating technology into their teaching, while English teachers with more skeptical attitudes tend to make less effective use of technology. The study concludes that in order to improve technology integration in teaching, efforts need to be made to change English teachers' negative attitudes towards technology through adequate training and support.

Abstract

In an increasingly multicultural and interconnected world, the integration of culturally-responsive teaching methods into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction has emerged as a vital pedagogical approach. This study examines the impact of culturally-responsive writing instruction on the development of EFL learners' writing skills, comparing it with traditional writing instruction. The objective is to explore how integrating cultural elements into writing pedagogy enhances linguistic competencies, fosters engagement, and promotes inclusivity in diverse classrooms. A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining a quantitative pre-test and post-test experimental approach with qualitative interviews and focus group discussions. The quantitative phase of the study involved assessing writing performance in two groups: one experimental group that received culturally-responsive instruction and one control group that followed traditional teaching methods. Writing samples were evaluated using standardized rubrics to measure key competencies such as content, organization, grammar, and critical thinking. The qualitative phase gathered insights into students' perceptions, motivation, and engagement through thematic analysis of interviews and focus group discussions. The results demonstrated significant improvements in the experimental group's writing performance, with notable gains in grammar (+40.9%), critical thinking (+41.7%), and vocabulary (+35.3%). Students reported higher engagement, confidence, and personal connection to writing tasks. Teachers observed improved participation and deeper critical analysis in student writing. However, challenges such as balancing curriculum demands and limited institutional support were highlighted. Overall, the findings underscore the transformative potential of culturally-responsive instruction in improving writing outcomes, fostering cultural appreciation, and creating inclusive learning environments. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence advocating for educational equity and culturally-responsive practices in EFL classrooms.
