Abstract

Differential equations is a branch of mathematics which is closely related to mathematical modeling that arises in real-world problems. Problem solving ability is an essential component to solve contextual problem of differential equations properly. The purposes of this study are to describe contextual teaching and learning (CTL) model in differential equations course, to improve lecturers’ abilities in implementing CTL, and to improve students’ problem solving ability in differential equations. The study was conducted in the fifth semester of 2015/2016 academic year with 34 students of mathematics education Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta as participants. The CTL model was applied by lesson study approach which involved three stages namely plan, do, and see in each cycle. This research was conducted in four cycles. The study results found that discovery-based CTL could be applied in differential equations course. The lecturer abilities to design discovery-based contextual learning plan, to present real-world problem in learning process, to design learning strategy and assessment instruments of problem solving improved significantly. Problem solving ability of students also improved during teaching and learning process.

Abstract

The study aims to describe the ability of mathematical creative thinking on the aspects of fluency, flexibility, and originality in solving open-ended problem of Linear Equations with One Variable. The subjects are 7th grade students of one private junior high school in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. The data was collected by the test, interview, and documentation. The method of data validation was used triangulation, i.e. techniques and resources. The analysis technique of the data was used an interactive method that consists of the reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The result of the research shows that the fluency aspect achieved by the students ability to mention the possibility of other answers. Then, the flexibility aspect is showed by the students use different method to solve the problem, or at least use the appropriate method. The originality aspect is showed by the students‘ ability to make the problem which are rarely found by other students.

Abstract

Many studies have revealed that fraction is a complicated mathematics topic for students. Students struggle to solve problems including comparison and addition of fractions correctly. However, some students often make some common mistakes in solving the mathematics problems. There are three types of errors in solving mathematics problems, which are factual error, procedural error, and computational error. This study was aimed at investigating various mistakes by students in problems related to fractions. A set of validated problems about comparing and adding fractions was assigned to third grade students of SD N Laboratorium Unesa Surabaya. The results indicated that some students were not aware on how to compare and add fractions. Most of these students employed incorrect strategies categorized as procedural and conceptual errors.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the mathematics problems in the eighth grade mathematics textbook of new Indonesian curriculum (K-13) based on The Programme for International Student Assesment (PISA) frameworks. The object of this study was the the revised version textbooks of the eighth grade mathematics student’s book published by The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) in 2014. The framework of the analysis in this study was the PISA components consisting of process, content, and context with its categories. The research method was descriptive quantitative. The data was collected by observing the contents of the textbook and interviewing the students and the teachers in SMP Negeri 2 Rembang. The analysis showed that the contents of the textbook were in accordance to the PISA components. The result also indicated that in both semester of the students’ book, the problems involving the process of employing mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning were more dominant than others. Moreover, in the contexts, the problems were dominated by the personal context. Furthermore, the first semester students’ books were dominated by the change and relationships contents while the second semester books were dominated by the space and shape contents.

Abstract

Pedagogical content knowledge plays a role in learning in classroom. The study aims to 1) analyze the teachers’ knowledge of the students' errors and difficulties in solving linear equations and 2) describe the instructional strategies used by teachers to reduce their errors and difficulties. The subjects were two novice teachers who have taught the Junior High School 7th grade students with different math abilities for two years. The data collection was conducted by open questionnaire and interview. The results showed that both teachers have knowledge of students' errors and difficulties in solving linear equations. However, the teacher's learning strategies in helping students reduce students' errors and difficulties were different from one another. It can be concluded that the teacher's knowledge of the students’ errors and difficulties can help teachers determine the appropriate learning strategies to present a learning subject matter.

Abstract

Based on PISA survey in 2012, Indonesia was only placed on 64 out of 65 participating countries. The survey suggest that the students’ ability of reasoning, spatial orientation, and problem solving are lower compare with other participants countries, especially in Shouth East Asia. Nevertheless, the result of PISA does not elicit clearly on the students’ inability in solving PISA problem such as the location and the types of student’s errors. Therefore, analyzing students’ error in solving PISA problem would be essential countermeasure to help the students in solving mathematics problems and to develop scaffolding. Based on the data analysis, it is found that there are 5 types of error which is made by the subject. They consist of reading error, comprehension error, transformation error, process skill error, and encoding error. The most common mistake that subject do is encoding error with a percentage of 26%. While reading is the fewest errors made by the subjects that is only 12%. The types of given scaffolding was explaining the problem carefully and making a summary of new words and find the meaning of them, restructuring problem-solving strategies and reviewing the results of the completion of the problem.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe students’ ability in solving mathematical representation problems evaluated from mathematical disposition.  The subjects are three students of 10th grade of public senior high school (PSHS) in Padalarang, West Java, Indonesia. They were selected from 35 students with high, medium, and low mathematical disposition ability. The results of the study showed that almost all of the students able to use visual representation to solve mathematical problems, and create mathematical models and solve problems by involving mathematical expressions. In contrast, most of students could not fulfill two indicators of the mathematical representation ability, i.e. creating the sketch of geometric patterns and making the mathematical model based on the situation and data given.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the students’ difficulties of MTs Negeri Surakarta 1 in solving story based problems on the subject of Pythagoras along with its alternative solutions. This is a qualitative descriptive research. This study illustrates the difficulties of students in solving story based problemsof the subject of Pythagoras. Research subjects in this study is composed of three students of class IX with each capable of high, medium and low. The data collection was condducted using the test method and the method of interview. The results of this study indicate that low-ability students have difficulty in determining the direction of wind direction, understand the intent of the language that is understood about the story, the difficulty in making a mathematical model as well as difficulties in the calculation. Difficulties experienced by the studentswith medium capability are determining the drawing of wind direction, understanding the intent of the language that is understood about the story, and making a mathematical model. While the high-ability students have no significant problems in understanding a story about the subject of Pythagoras, they just forgot to add ± sign in the answers, and the unit of length in the final calculation. However, the unit length was written in the final conclusions.

Abstract

The aim of this research is knowing whether research instrument is feasible or no to get data of research. The instrument of this research is logical mathematics quotient test with 25 problems in multiple choice and mathematics problem solving test with 4 questions in essay.  Testing the appropriateness of instrument of logical mathematics intelligence consist of content validity, level of problem difficulties, power differentiator, and reliability. Meanwhile, testing the appropriateness of instrument of mathematics problem solving use content validity. The validator for both of logical mathematics intelligence test and mathematics problem solving test is expert judgement. There are 39 students of Senior High School as respondent who are joining instrument try out. The results of appropriateness of instrument show: 1) there are 25 questions of logical mathematics quotient instrument which are feasible to take research data, and 2) instrument of mathematics problem solving in linier equation system material is feasible to use with some revisions from expert judgment.
