Abstract

Considering the important role of Individual Differences (IDs) factors in variations in the ultimate success of learners learning second language (L2, this study investigated Indonesian college students’ two ID components, self-perceived communication competence (SPCC) and their communication apprehension (CA), in English as L2. Several rationales become the basis of the present study. Despite the importance of learners’ SPCC in L2 learning as suggested by several empirical studies outside Indonesia, there have not been any specific study investigating learners’ SPCC in the Indonesian context despite the country being the home of one of the largest number of L2 speakers of English in the world. As a seminal study in the context, the study using quantitative methods enables generalisation which could pave a way for further studies in the field in the Indonesian context. A total of 276 non-English major college students participated in the study in a survey using probability random sampling. Using descriptive statistics in SPSS 21, the study found that learners had medium level of SPCC and medium level of CA. Through correlation formula, the study also found that there was moderate significant association between learners’ SPCC and their CA. Through regression analysis, it was found that their SPCC could predict 23% of variance in their CA. The findings urge teachers to provide as many learning opportunities as possible in enjoyable learning environment to increase learners’ perception of their capability, in turn boosting their confidence to speak in English. Based on the findings and several limitations of the study, several suggestions of future studies are presented.

Abstract

The effect of tests on the teaching and learning, generally known as washback, has been recognized by scholars for a long time. However, studies on washback are usually addressed for high-stakes testing. This study investigates the washback effect of low-stakes test namely performance-based test used in measuring reading skills. Such a test is low stakes because it does not bring about serious consequence on the part of the students. The subjects of the research were 10 English teachers and 50 students of junior high schools in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interview and a questionnaire for both the teachers and students. The results showed that performance-based test gives positive effect in reading for the EFL learners in the areas of: students’ enthusiasm in reading, reducing boredom in reading, students’ curiosity on reading text content, and students’ improvement on higher-order thinking skills. To the teachers it affects the areas of teaching methods, teaching materials, and time allotment.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the problems faced by the ICT teacher of SMP Negeri 2 Semarang in using English as classroom language. The International Standard School project is a new education policy in Indonesia that was enacted with a main goal to prepare the students for global competition. This policy is both an effort to internationalize schools in Indonesia and a part of the national education decentralization reform. The title International Standard School, SBI in Bahasa, is given as an accreditation status to schools that have completed the required standards. This accredited status requires the school to carry out teaching and learning process all in English. This applies to all subjects including ICT. This article is based on the observation on the teaching and learning process in ICT class at SMP Negeri 2 Semarang as one of famous International Standard Schools in Semarang. The observation has resulted in general problems which is elaborated in the teaching documents four aspects of language mastery; fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.

Abstract

This study attempts to find out conveyed messages in the movie from the realization of the appraisal and narrative structure as well as to describe the use of the Appraisal System to express LaGravenese's (a) Attitudes, (b)Engagement & (c) Graduation towards the main characters in Freedom Writers movie screenplay. Using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive approach for discourse appraisal system analysis, the result of this study reveals several messages of tolerance, earning respect and trust, honor diversity, and striving for success and trust from the realization of Appraisal and Narrative Structure either in the dialogues or monologues of Freedom Writers’ characters. The result from the Appraisal Devices realizing (a) Attitudes reveals that LaGravenese likes to express characters’ negative emotion explicitly than implicitly. He likes to express characters’ negative capability than other kinds of Judgments. He appreciates the characters using more Negative Value which denotes that in his opinion, they see each other negatively. (b)Engagement used in the screenplay describes that he emphasizes more on characters’ denial towards each other’s opinion and existence with the use of more Disclaim Heterogloss in the screenplay. (c)Graduation used in the screenplay describes that the use of more Sharpening Focus indicates he emphasizes on characters’ category boundary more than scaling of intensity.Keywords: Appraisal Devices, Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation.

Abstract

This paper mainly investigates the differences between men and women in using language especially the students’ conversation at STAIN Kudus. These differences were viewed from the aspects of vocabulary, attitudes, syntax and non-verbal differences. This research belongs to a qualitative research. Data were collected through transcripts of a video documentation played by the students of Sharia Department at STAIN Kudus. The findings showed that male and female students have shown differences in their form, content, and use. Men tend to be more directive. Besides, they used more simple words. On the other hand, women were more expressive and polite in using language. In addition, they used more gestures and words signifying feeling, emotional and psychological state.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the efforts made by minority groups who are being oppressed by racism based on context-relationship of African Americans at the movie 42 (2013). Findings of this article based on qualitative studies with auteur theory, and mise-en scene, undertaken in movie 42 (2013) regarding racism towards minority groups, African-American, and by implementing thick description the researcher highlighted minority group’s achievement’s at the movie 42 in the field of Sports and the relation to life-betterment. The result revealed that racism towards minority group had emerged because of the so-called white’s supremacy concept. This study found that African American as minority group were able to alter their life despite of racism through equal sport’s opportunity. Besides, this study has highlighted one pivotal area in which any minority group should concern to enhance their life; sports. Moreover, even though this study focusing more on the relation of the effort’s made by minority group at America, this study illustrates the importance of having initiatives in providing better opportunity related to sports to ensure a better life opportunity among minority groups all over the globe.

Abstract

Theories and practices in second language reading pedagogy often overlook the sentence processing description from the psycholinguistics perspective. Second language reading comprehension is easily associated with vocabulary learning or discourse strategy. Yet, such activities can lead to an unnatural way of reading such as translating vocabularies or pointing out information as required. Meanwhile the authentic way of reading should encourage a natural stream of ideas to be interpreted from sentence to sentence. As suggested by the sentence processing notion from the psycholinguistics point of view, syntax appears to be the key to effective and authentic reading as opposed to the general belief of semantic or discourse information being the primary concern. This article argues that understanding the architecture of sentence processing, with syntactic parsing at the core of the underlying mechanism, can offer insights into the second language reading pedagogy. The concepts of syntactic parsing, reanalysis, and sentence processing models are described to give the idea of how sentence processing works. Additionally, a critical review on the differences between L1 and L2 sentence processing is presented considering the recent debate on individual differences as significant indicators of nativelike L2 sentence processing. Lastly, implications for the L2 reading pedagogy and potential implementation in instructional setting are discussed.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the potential of Facebook Group (FbG) for teaching essay writing skills in the period of social distancing due to covid-19 pandemic. The study involved three groups of students who had been attending Essay Writing Course. Data was collected through questionnaires, interview, home assignments, and documents. Questionnaires were distributed via Google Form. Interviews were conducted with students through WhatsApp chats and calls. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse data obtained from closed questionnaires, home assignments, and mid-term test. Data from open questionnaires, interviews, and documents was analysed using qualitative inductive approach to identifying themes – topics, ideas, and patters of meaning. Study findings indicated that FbG has been an appropriate place for developing essay writing skills amidst the pandemic. FbG as networking site has made possible an effective, efficient, and practical essay writing learning for the following reasons.  Firstly, FbG discussion forum provided invaluable learning input. Secondly, FbG was easy to operate. The students could learn independently at their own pace.  Lastly, use of FbG brought them convenience and raised confidence to better engage in learning online. FbG has supported students’ essay writing learning process that has led to good writing performance. This can be seen not only from the conducive learning process in comparison to traditional classroom instruction prior to the pandemic, but also from learning outcome apparently observed in writing portfolios as well as mid-term test.

Abstract

This article is triggered by the emergence of ethnicity aspects in Indonesian literature. The importance of ethnicity in Indonesian literature is because Indonesian literature is assumed to be plural, not singular. That is, the reality of Indonesia in Indonesian literature is not limited to one ethnicity, but various ethnicities. In the perspective of modern Indonesian literature, Indonesian novels are synonymous with Malay, Jakarta, Java and several other cities that have contributed to the development of Indonesian literature. In the perspective of ethnic Indonesian literature, Indonesian novels are identical with ethnicities whose existence is ignored in modern Indonesian literature. In this context, ethnic Indonesian literature is important to explore. This article explores the interesting representation of Lombok in Ethnic Indonesian literature. Lombok serves an ethnic that needs to be analyzed in Indonesian literature, because Lombok is assumed to be part of Java (Marrison, 1999; Meij 2011) and Lombok is hegemonyed in Java (Satrya, 2018). The problem is whether Indonesian literature still represents Lombok as shown by Marrison, Meij, and Satrya in the study of philology and literature. The Indonesian novel of Lombok delineating the issue of Java in interpreting Lombok is the novel Kenari Mentaram (2013) by Salman Faris. This article applies Stuart Hall’s representation theory and model. Based on that theory, the novel Kenari Mentaram is assumed to be a production of meaning regarding Lombok. The analytical method uses the semiotic analysis method and the Stuart Hall discourse model. Lombok is interpreted in the novel Kenari Mentaram in the context of internationalization. In this context, Lombok's art is the only commodity that can be sold. The art of Lombok represented is the art of Lombok which is capable of competing internationally by taking a model from Java. Thus, the internationalization of Lombok can only be done by taking the Javanese Model. In the  internationalization context, the discourse of Lombok art discussed is the multicultural art of Lombok. The Kenari Mentaram novel delineates as part of the discourse of the nationalization of Lombok in the context of Indonesian literature and the internationalization of Lombok in the context of tourism.

Abstract

The crisis that the world is in today has brought people together through the suffering they share. It leads to the presence of solidarity, which shows how people come hand in hand to help each other, showing that humanity exists even in difficult times. This paper seeks to analyze the portrayal of solidarity and suffering as part of the moral values of Han Kang's novel 'Human Acts,' which deals with the similar crisis that occurred in South Korea in 1980, known as the Gwangju Uprising. It applies descriptive qualitative research which concentrates directly and clearly on the aspects in the novel. It is learned that the characters in the novel convey the moral values most through the way in which they respect and care for one another and that the suffering shared between the characters is part of both their loss and their survival because of the solidarity they have built along the way. The moral values depicted in the novel ‘Human Acts’ are not merely fiction. It was realistically shown during the Gwangju Uprising and is now being shown in the current situation of the pandemic.
