Abstract

Social media has become a dominant factor in shaping the political behaviour of Generation Z, especially in the 2024 Presidential Election. This study aims to analyze the influence of information exposure, news content, candidate electability, and social media on the behaviour of Generation Z voters. With an explanatory quantitative approach, data were collected through questionnaires filled out by 160 University of Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo students, using the multistage cluster random sampling method. The research variables were measured using a Likert scale and tested using multiple linear regression based on SPSS 25. The study results showed that, partially, news content, candidate electability, and social media significantly influenced the behaviour of Generation Z voters, with the most significant contribution coming from social media (30.7%). In contrast, information exposure did not have a significant influence. Simultaneously, the four variables contributed 55.2% to voter behaviour. The study also found that although Generation Z actively uses social media, they tend to be sceptical of political information. In conclusion, social media, candidate electability, and news content are the main factors that influence Generation Z's political behaviour. Therefore, designing a creative and fact-based social media campaign strategy is essential to increase healthy political participation.

Abstract

Reaching voters in presidential elections frequently involves using identity politics. On the other side, first-time voters might serve as prospective targets for gaining supporters. This study aims to investigate the link between first-time voters' choices for presidential candidates and the social identities (faith, gender, and ethnicity) of presidential candidates. Social Identity Theory is the leading theory that explains the relationship between social identity and political choice preferences. This quantitative survey study looks at the relationship between political candidates' social identities and the preferences of first-time voters in Indonesia in 2023. The study's findings indicate a connection between the presidential and vice-presidential candidates' social identities and the decisions made by first-time voters. For instance, the political choices of first-time voters are directly correlated with their gender, notably whether they will accept or approve of female presidents and vice presidents. The study's findings indicate that first-time voters are open to electing a female president. An interesting finding to highlight is how new voters tend to be open to the choice of president and vice president of other religions. Most first-time voters (respondents) accept presidents and vice presidents from minority religions such as Catholics, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Confucians, and local religions.

Abstract

The political year 2024 in Indonesia presents unique dynamics in political news consumption, especially among the Millennial and Gen Z generations. This study explores their preferences, habits, and patterns of political news consumption behavior and the factors influencing them, focusing on the city of Bandung as a case study. This study uses a descriptive analysis method with a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants to gain in-depth insights. The study results show that the intensity of Exposure to political news through social media plays a significant role in increasing Millennial and Gen Z interest in political issues. Instagram and TikTok are the leading platforms used because of their interactive features and short video content that is considered interesting, informative, and entertaining. In contrast, traditional media such as television and print are increasingly rarely used because they are considered less flexible and difficult to access. The preference for short video formats reflects the fast and dynamic lifestyle of the younger generation. In addition, their active involvement in political discussions on social media shows the great potential of this generation as a driver of change in the Indonesian political landscape. By utilizing social media platforms and relevant visual content, political stakeholders can increase the younger generation's involvement in the democratic process while strengthening their role in shaping the future of Indonesian politics.

Abstract

In the post-Reformasi era, the political dynamic of Indonesia cannot be separated from the role of elites entrenched in various government lines. The 2024 presidential and vice presidential elections also involved political elites, including President Jokowi, especially in winning the eldest son, Gibran. As President, Jokowi has various accesses to socialize with the Prabowo-Gibran work program, which is considered a symbol of the continuity of Jokowi’s program. Using qualitative methods and Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, this article will analyze the myths in Jokowi’s political communication on social media related to the nomination of Gibran Rakabuming Raka as the 2024 Vice Presidential Candidate. This article produces three main points: denotation, connotation, and myth, and shows Jokowi’s political communication that reflects democracy and neutrality. In addition, the obstacles faced are often transformed into narratives that strengthen his leadership image. This study suggests enhancing the narrative of meritocracy and democracy, transparency in the political process, consistency in national symbols, focus on public issues, and strengthening the image of independent and progressive leadership. This research is expected to provide new insights for political practitioners and researchers in understanding the dynamics of contemporary politics in Indonesia.

Abstract

The arrest of Bandung Mayor Yana Mulyana by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has sparked widespread media attention, which has been intensively reporting on the case. In response to this situation, the Bandung City Communication and Information Agency (Diskominfo) has strengthened its relationship with the mass media to maintain the image of the city government. This study analyzes the Diskominfo media relations strategy in managing publications amidst the crisis. A descriptive qualitative approach was used with data analysis techniques based on the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The findings show that Diskominfo utilizes various strategies to reduce negative images, such as press releases, press conferences, and cooperation with the media. The relationship between Diskominfo and the mass media is interpreted as mutually beneficial cooperation; the media obtains easier access to information, while Diskominfo can convey positive narratives to the public. However, this relationship raises concerns from the public regarding the potential for reducing media independence. In conclusion, Diskominfo's media relations strategy effectively manages the crisis, although a balance is needed to maintain transparency and independence of the news.

Abstract

Sexual harassment continues to occur with an increasing number of victims. Chemical castration has been proposed as a solution, but it has sparked debates among experts and the public. This study examined the arguments for and against chemical castration in online media. It used the Discourse Coalition Framework and the Discourse Network Analysis approach to map this debate. The analysis included 84 statements from 32 news articles published on Detik.com between January 2016 and December 2022. The study revealed changes in the online discussions of chemical castration. The discourse shifted from the focus on norms and the purpose of punishment to the nature of punishment and its purpose. Subsequently, a discourse coalition emerged between the actors regarding chemical castration. The actors sought support from one another to support their respective positions. The discourse also changed along with groups of diverse views. Some rejected the law, arguing that it contradicts religious principles and does not guarantee a deterrence effect. Meanwhile, those who supported chemical castration continued to strengthen their arguments. In general, this study can be a reference for addressing sexual harassment.

Abstract

This study analyzes the news coverage of President Joko Widodo’s official visit to IKN (Ibu Kota Nusantara), accompanied by influencers on July 28, 2024. This topic gained significant attention in numerous mass media. The researcher conducted a quantitative content analysis of 87 news articles from 10 national online news portals. News portals, news slant, and news sources are the variables to determine the most dominant news frame by referring to the five generic news frames by Semetko and Valkenburg, as an analysis framework. Findings reveal significant differences between news portals and news slant, as well as between news portals and news sources. Each confirmed by the Fisher-Freeman-Halton Exact Test (p <.001), indicating that each online news portal follows a distinct pattern in presenting news slant and selecting news sources to be quoted in its reporting. MANOVA results show that there are several media effects on five generic news frames. Especially on the conflict frame, recorded a significant effect from the three independent variables: news portal (p = .006), news sources (p = .001), and news slant (p = .001). Meanwhile, the responsibility frame was more affected by the news portal variable. The human-interest frame (p = .001) and the morality frame (p = .021) were more frequently observed in news articles that cited news sources from intellectuals and NGOs. However, the economic consequences frame was not significantly affected by the three variables in our analysis. This indicates that the economic aspects were not the main focus in the news. This finding confirms that the media tends to emphasize conflict in reporting on this issue.

Abstract

The sexual violence case involving a lecturer at the University of Mataram has garnered significant public and media attention. The coverage of the lecturer's dismissal not only revealed the facts surrounding the incident but also highlighted the role of the PPKS Task Force in handling the case and the media's role in shaping the narrative. This study explores the role of the PPKS Task Force in the discourse presented by Kompas.id media. Using a qualitative descriptive method and Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis theory, data were collected through literature review, interviews, and documentation. The findings show that the textual structure used by Kompas.id effectively constructs a narrative that influences public perception, indicating media bias in favor of the institution (Unram). The role of the PPKS Task Force at the University of Mataram, as reported by Kompas.id, is consistently portrayed as taking firm action against perpetrators. The Task Force is represented as a key institution in the prevention and handling of cases involving victims. Renaming the PPKS Task Force to the PPKPT Task Force marks a new focus on preventing violence within educational environments
