Abstract

This experiment aimed to find out the optimum density combinations of prawn (M. rossenbergii (de Man, 1879) and fish of kissing gouramy (Helostoma temminckii Cuvier, 1829) in the polyculture based aquaponic fish culture system. There are four treatments and three replications applied in the Completely Randomized Design experiment. The treatments were the combination of giant freshwater prawn (U) and kissing gouramy (T) densities for one square meter (m2), namely (A) 30 prawns and 100 gouramy (U30T100); (B) 20 prawns and 50 gouramy (U20T50); (C) 30 prawns and 50 gouramy (U30T50) and (D) 20 prawns and 100 gouramy (U20T100). An equal density of aquatic plant of water spinach Ipomoea reptans Poir was planted in each treatment units. The results from 60 days experiment showed that the highest growth of prawn were achieved in treatment C i.e 9,355 ± 1,096 g and survival rates of 75.02±0.67%. The highest growth of kissing gouramy were achieved at treatment D i.e 13,688 ± 1,382 g and survival rates of 86.66±0.83%. The water spinach was able to reduce ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The lowest reduction was achieved at treatment A, i.e., amonia 6.54 %, nitrite 1,33% and nitrate 5,90%. While the highest reduction of ammonia is 11.72% found at treatment D, 3,52% for nitrite at treatment C and 11,72% for nitrate at treatment D. The highest reduction of Total N dan Total P by water spinach were found at the treatment C i.e. 32.54% and D i.e. 47.62%. According to the dominance and abundance index of plankton, Chlorophyceae and Cyanophyceae were recognized as the dominant class in all treatments.

Abstract

H. SUTARNO & R. RASYANI. 1987. Morphogeneses and physiological maturity of jambu bangkok (Psidium guajava L.) fruits.Berita Biologi 3(7) : 326 - 329. Studies on nVorphogeneses and physiological maturity of jampu bangkok fruits were carried out from grown i plants in Bogor. Fruits developed from oval to round and nerly egg shape with fruit diameter at about 100 - 110 mm for 18 - 25 weeks. Moisture content and softness of fruits increased slowly at the early time of ripening, but respiration rate increased obviously during period of shape development and ripening. Optimal yield was obtained, when harvesting at the last time of fruit enlargment, i.e. 18 weeks from blooming.

Abstract

The improvement of rice (Oryza sativa L.) Ciherang variety for early maturity and high production traits was carried out by Marker Assisted Backcrossing (MAB) method using Nipponbare as donor parent. The foreground selection of Hd2 gene was laid on flanking markers of RM1362 and RM7601 in QTL region. The selection process of F1 to BC2F2 plants were based on molecular markers and agronomic characters. The BC2F3 plants were challenged to bacterial leaf blight to know their resistance in this hybridization. The results indicated that the foreground and background selection were not sufficient as selection tools therefore they would be more accurate if assosiated with agronomic characters. Four selected lines derived from Ciherang x Nipponbare crossed (BC2F3 plant # 283, 307, 373, and 462) could be promising lines with early maturity and high productioncompared to Ciherang. Selected BC2F3 lines flowered earlier than original Ciherang up to 7-10 days, while the yield increasing was 3.55 to 9.2% higher based on weight of filled grains/plant, and from 3.58 to 19.39% higher based on the number of filled grain/plant. However, all of BC2F3 lines were not resistant to bacterial leaf blight attack.

Abstract

Indonesia has known to have several fiber plants used as rope, craft and clothing material. The literature study, observations well as interview with local community in several places in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Moluccas and Sulawesi suggested that there were nine fiber plant species that were used as clothing material in the past. But clothing material from the bark of Broussonetia papyrifera (L.)L?Her. ex Vent.,?kumpe?, is still being fabricated and used in Cental Sulawesi up to now.Two of those nine fiber plant species for clothing material had good economic value namely Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich and Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) L?Her. ex Vent.

Abstract

YUN INDIARTO.1988,Relationship between percent coverage of Salvinia molesta f nd growth rate of Nile Tilapia (Tilapia nilotica),Berita Biologi 3(8) : 400 - 404.A study on the growth rate of Nile Tilapia in relation to various coverage of S.molesta has been conducted in experimental ponds for twelve weeks. Anaiysis of variance shows that the percent coverage of S.molesta affected significantly the growth rate of the Nile Tilapia (weight : F>F 0.01 and length : F > F0.05).It was found that 50% coverage or more may reduce the tish growth rate. The best growth rate was 1 reached at 25% coverage.Environmental condition:related to the above findings are discussed.

Abstract

Abstract

Vaccination is one of the approaches against infectious diseases in cultured marine fish. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Flexibacter vaccine in juvenile of tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus). Nine hundred of tiger grouper with total length of 7-8 cm reared in nine concrete tanks. For each three tanks, fishes were vaccinated with injection, immersion, and without vaccination as control. Booster was delivered at 10 and 30 days after first vaccination. Challenge test with live Flexibacter bacteria was performed 90 days post vaccination. Observations were made on clinical symptoms and survival rates which presented in relative percentage survival(RPS).The experiments were performed in completely randomized design with three replicates. The data then analyzed with ANOVA. The results showed that the antibody titer values of vaccinated fish were higher then unvaccinated fish, namely 128 for injection, 64 for bathing and 4 for control. Survival rates of vaccinated fish following challenged test were higher than control and significantly different (P<0.05), i.e. 88.67% (with RPS of 60%) for injection and 83.33% (with RPS of 50%) for immersion and 66.67% for controls. It is suggested that Flexibacter vaccine administered through injection and bathing are effective to increase immunity of tiger grouper against Flexibacter infection
