Abstract

This research aims to find out the effectiveness of cognitive strategy instruction for improving intellectual abilities of undergraduate students with cognitive expressing difficulties, especially in actualizing their thinking abilities starting from lower order thinking up to higher order thinking. Therefore, the cognitive strategy instructional design based on Bloom’s Taxonomy is constructed in order to accomplish the research objectives. This research uses mixed method approach entailing the implementation of two research methods. The first is qualitative method which aims to get information of the cognitive strategy in instructional process. The second is quantitative method which is used to measure the students’ improvement in cognitive abilities or actual intellectual abilities after participating in cognitive strategies instruction. Research implementation is divided into three stages. The first stage is needs assessment, in which the students’ thinking / cognitive skill abilities are observed and measured in order to have evidence whether or not they have cognitive expression difficulties. The second stage is to use the needs assessment results in designing cognitive strategy instruction. The third stage is the implementation of the instructional design. There are 20 undergraduate students taking part in this research who are selected by purposive sampling technique. The results revealed that cognitive strategy instruction effectively improves the actual intellectual abilities of students with cognitive expression difficulties. Qualitatively, the students feel very satisfied with their actual intellectual abilities.

Abstract

Gifted children need special services at school and college, especially in developments that include cognitive, physical, language, emotional, social and academic aspects. Currently there are educational services that can facilitate them in the form of SKS (Semester Credit System) programs. One of the schools that organizes SKS is SMAN 3 Bandung. The purpose of SKS learning is to provide the flexibility for students to learn and grow according to their abilities, talents and interests, in addition to fulfilling the applicable policies. In general, the implementation of SKS is divided into three main stages, including 1) preparation, 2) implementation, and 3) monitoring and evaluation. For fast learners, enrichment program services are provided so that they can complete the entire learning program faster than the quota in high school which is six semesters. This is very useful for students who have the giftedness so that they can complete in just 4 (four) semesters, but the report books they receive remain 6 (six) semesters. As a follow-up at the University there is a fast track program at Bandung Institute of Technology where Undergraduate students who are at their final semester can attend Master program. The main objective of this program is to accelerate students in completing studies. Fast track students are those who can complete their bachelor and master degree in 5 years. This SKS and Fast Track program is one of the services that can be used for gifted children because it is very effective and efficient in completing their education faster.

Abstract

Every student at the Teacher Education Institute (IPG) has now been given an inclusive education course so they know about its implementation at school. Therefore, this research looks at how far the willingness of new teachers to be placed in schools with inclusive education. It was conducted in IPG in Sabah which involved 50 trainees from 5 different courses and took the Inclusive Education subject. It is a survey of quantitative reviews and uses questionnaires for data collection. The data were analyzed using Statistical Packages for the Social Science (SPSS) to see the frequencies, percentage and mean descriptive analysis. Besides, five trainee teachers from five different courses were interviewed to identify barriers that may interfere with the trainee teachers’ willingness for inclusive education. The results showed that 86 % of the trainee teachers are ready to accept special need students without prejudice and 84 % are willing to approach and recognize special needs students in their classroom. The findings also showed that there was no significant difference in the readiness of the IPG trainee in the implementation of inclusive education based on gender namely t = -0.270 with P = 0.811 greater than 0.05 (P <0.05). The trainee teachers should be able to meet the needs of students with disabilities in school. The success of inclusive education rests on teacher preparation gearing towards inclusive education. However, continuous guidance is essential to help produce qualified teachers, especially in understanding the underlying philosophy of inclusive education.
