This study aims to analyze the message in an advertisement by applying the theory of semiotics. The data source in this study is one of the advertisements from L'Oreal’s campaign, entitled “This is an Ad for Men Campaign.†The theory utilized as a reference in the analysis process is the semiotic theory proposed by Chandler (2017) by paying attention to the two forms of signs contained in the advertisement, namely verbal sign and visual sign. The data collection method in this study is a combination of the observation method with the note taking technique. While the qualitative method is applied in the process of analyzing the data proposed by Creswell (2009). In presenting the results of the analysis, this study combines formal method in the form of using tables and photo as well as informal methods in the form of descriptions. The conclusion of this study is that this advertisement does not only promote their products for commercial purposes only, but this advertisement is also able to raise social issues experienced by women both in their personal lives and in their professional careers. This advertisement combines the power of verbal sign and visual sign in conveying their message to a wide range of audiences. Three verbal signs and three visual signs are combined to obtain the audiences’ attention in understanding the message of this advertisement.

This article discussed about morphosyntax that deals with the combination of morphology and syntax. The article was aimed to find out the derivational suffixes forming adjectives and the syntactic functions of the adjectives found in the data source. The data of this article were taken by library research method and note-taking technique from the novel Forrest Gump, which published in 157 pages and 26 chapters by Pocket Books in 1994. This novel is written by Winston Groom. The collected data were analyzed descriptive qualitatively based on the theory of Morphology and Syntax by Quirk, et al (1985). This article revealed that there were the attachment of suffix {-ful}, {-less}, {-ly}, {-y}, {-al}, {-ial}, {-ic} and {-ous} changed the base noun into adjective, it is called denominal adjectives. Then, deverbal adjectives which made the word class changed from verb into adjective, there were the attachment of suffix {-able} and {-ive}. Meanwhile, for the syntactic functions there were three types found, they are attributive, predicative and postpositive.

This research aimed to find out the textual metafunction in the text of the state speech inauguration of the President Joko Widodo. Textual metafunction is realized by a thematization system in the form of elements of themes and rheme. Textual metafunction realized by the thematization system is related to grammatical elements used to express information in a clause. This research applied a descriptive qualitative approach. The data source of this research was in the form of an oral source from the video of President Joko Widodo's inauguration speech for two periods, namely 2014-2019 and 2019--2024 which was downloaded through the site www.youtube.com. This type of research data was written data. Written data was obtained from the results of oral transcription into written form so that data forms were obtained, such as words, phrases, groups of phrases, clauses, and text units. The theory used is the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). The method and techniques of collecting data applied in this research were the listening method and the note taking technique. Then, method and techniques of analysing data applied were the distribution method and basic techniques for direct elements. In addition, the method of presenting the results of data analysis applied was a formal method in the form of signs and symbols as well as an informal method in the form of words, phrases, phrases, clauses, and texts. The results showed that both of the themes of the text of the inauguration speech President Joko Widodo was concerning the sovereignty of the people and the Unitary Republic of Indonesia. Textual metafunction was examined based on a thematization system in the form of theme elements (topical, interpersonal, textual) and rheme. Based on the analysis, there was an increase in the use of themes from 2014 (42.2%) to 2019 (57.8%). Meanwhile, the use of rheme in 2014 was dominated by the material processing rheme, which is 27 uses, while in 2019 it was dominated by the behaviour processing rheme, which was 40 usage.

This research aims to study news translation in magazines, specifically about textual manipulation which occurred in the National Geographic Indonesia April 2020 issue. The analysis applied the theory of translation strategies by Chesterman (2016) but only referred to the syntactic strategy. This study also applied a qualitative method and the analysis is presented descriptively. The analysis revealed the textual changes that occurred in the articles in the National Geographic Indonesia Magazine April 2020 issue. Textual manipulations are the results of the application of translation strategies which are observable through the comparison of both the translation product itself and the original text. Therefore, they can be linked with Chesterman’s syntactic strategies which are found in the data. Based on the data analysis, the following strategies were found, they are literal translation, loan or calque, transposition, unit shift, phrase structure change, clause structure change, sentence structure change, cohesion change, and level shift.

Translation becomes very important in this fast growing information era in which people from different speaking countries need more resources to develop their knowledge. Banks are one of field that demand the assistance from translators to translate their annual reports. However, it is not as easy as it looks since translators may find issues in translating an annual report into target languages because he/she needs to find equivalent translation of source language for such terms into target languages. The aim of this study is to analyze the procedures applied in translating the Indonesian economic terminologies into English in the annual report. This paper is a library research where the data is in the form of documents or printed out texts. The method that is implemented in analyzing the data in this study is the qualitative one proposed by Creswell (2009). There were eight procedures applied by the translator in translating the Indonesian economic terms into English in the annual report. They are transference, naturalization, through translation, transposition or shifts, modulation, recognize translation, synonym and couplets.

This research was entitled "Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning Model on Mastery of Japanese Language Ellipsis Topic on Japanese Literature Students at Udayana University." This study aimed to analyze the understanding and mastery of the fifth semester students of Nihon Gengogaku Nyumon's Japanese Literature Department at Udayana University in the pretest and posttest phases with cooperative learning methods. This research focused on the film ellipsis entitled The Boy and the Beast / Bakemono No Ko directed by Mamoru Hasoda. The theory in this study used a theoretical study proposed by Halliday and Hasan. This research was an experimental research that used qualitative and quantitative approaches. The research method used in this research was observation and test. Observations were made during the implementation of the treatment. In data analysis activities, this research used quantitative data analysis and qualitative data analysis. The results of this study indicate that there was an increase in the learning process using the cooperative learning method with the type TPS (Think Pairs Share). This could be seen from the results of the pretest and posttest which had increased although not significantly. The pretest percentage for verbal ellipsis from 42.5% increased by 18.5% to 61% for noun ellipsis from 48% increased by 15% to 63% and for clause ellipsis from 56.5% increased by 0.5% to 57%. Based on these results, it could be concluded that there is an increase in student abilities because of the treatment which was carried out for four face-to-face meetings which were carried out on a platform that had been determined by the campus.

This study concerned on finding out the messages carried by both verbal and nonverbal signs in COVID-19 advertisements. The data were taken from Pinterest. The data were collected by observation method. The collected data were analyzed by qualitative method using theory of semiotics from Saussure (1983), the theory of meaning from Barthes (1977), and theory of color term from Wierzbicka (1996). The message is presented in formal and informal way. Our findings show that verbal and nonverbal cues in advertisements generally convey the messages that during the pandemic people have to obey protocols such as staying at home, wearing masks correctly, keep social distancing, and washing hands.
