Abstract

The issue of access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education was captured in Target 2 of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) because the early childhood period is critical to children?s learning and development. One of the ways by which teachers can provide children with the quality early childhood development and pre-primary education is through effective early childhood assessment. Assessment is extremely important for determining children?s learning and developmental progress. In spite of this, teachers do not carry out effective assessment in many pre-primary schools in Nigeria. While previous studies have recommended that the teachers should be trained, research efforts have not been targeted at finding out if the teachers themselves perceive that they need training in early childhood assessment practices. Consequently, this study examined if teachers in Ondo West Local Government Area perceive that they need training in early childhood assessment. The survey research design was adopted. Sample comprised two hundred and eighty eight pre-primary schools teachers from both public and private schools. An instrument titled ?Early Childhood Assessment Training Needs Questionnaire (ECATNQ)? was used. Data was analysed using percentage, mean and standard deviation. Pre-primary school teachers perceived that they need training in early childhood assessment. The implications of this finding for the achievement of Target 2 of SDG 4 were discussed. It was recommended among others that Ondo State Universal Basic Board and private school administrators should organise workshop and seminars for pre-primary school teachers on early childhood assessment.

Abstract

English material in Early Childhood Islamic Education or Pendidikan Islam Anak Usia Dini (PIAUD) program have to fulfill the targeted competence specifically demanded by PIAUD program. The English given has to be be English for Specific Purpose (ESP). Unfortunately, the English material provided has not been prepared based on the needs of the PIAUD program. The preparation of ESP material must go through certain stages such as needs analysis that involve the subject as the basis for considering the preparation of the material. This concept is in accordance with the principles of Participatory Action Research (PAR) related to the subject participation. This research combines the model of needs analysis and PAR method. This is a Research and Development (R & D) model to develop an English module for PIAUD program. Interview and observation combined with survey are used as the instruments to collect the data. The steps of the whole process along with the discussion are presented. The result reveals that the English material is suggested to focus more on communication skill as the PIAUD students will later use it to teach. In addition, the method that is considered effective to teach the children has to be delivered on a daily basis and fun-based learning. Lastly, a suggestion for other researchers to conduct further research is proposed.

Abstract

Abstract. Learning media is very important to use in delivering learning material. Children age 4-5 years are in the Preoperational period, where children begin to think abstractly, but not logically, therefore children need learning media to understand abstract concepts such as numbers in mathematics. Blocks are one of the learning media available in schools, but not many teachers have used blocks media optimally, even though blocks can be used in mathematics learning. In the first semester, the understanding of numerical recognition and simple addition skills of K1 children in XYZ school were low. The researcher used blocks as the learning media in an effort to improve numerical recognition skills and simple addition. The research method used in the ?Classroom Action Research? is the Kemmis and Taggart model. The purpose of this study was to improve the ability to recognize numbers and simple addition of children 4-5 years, using blocks media in their learning. The Classroom Action Research conducted with three cycles showed an increase in numerical recognition skills from pre-cycle with a percentage of 61.45%, increasing to 89.76% in cycle III. Simple addition skills were known at the pre-cycle of 64.58%, increasing to 86.68% in cycle III. From the research conducted, the researcher found that blocks media can improve the skills of recognizing numbers and simple addition of children age 4-5 years.

Abstract

This study aims to streamline mathematics learning outcomes through smart pocket card (picture cards and number cards) so that group B students can students in identifying and exploring mathematical abilities with further drawings that can be arranged into more complex material operations.  This study uses a mix of methods with research and development methods (Research and Development) The product developed in this study is a model of early childhood mathematics learning through smart pocket card learning media (picture cards and number cards). As explained above, this research uses a mix methods approach with three main methods including descriptive, evaluative, and experimental methods. Descriptive method is used to collect data about the condition of products that have been compared for products to be developed, the condition of the users, students and teachers, as well as inhibiting and supporting factors for the creation of products to be created. The results found that the first effectiveness test was conducted at the Ikal East Jakarta Kindergarten, while the number of children used as a small group test sample was 8 children. From the paired test results in East Jakarta Ikal Kindergarten obtained t count 24.777 and t table 0.70639 so there is a significant difference or HO is rejected then H1 is accepted. So it can be concluded that there is a difference between children's mathematics learning outcomes before and after the smart pocket card learning media is given (picture cards and number cards). Large group test at Pertiwi Karangsoka Kindergarten, as for the number of children used as a large group trial of 20 children. From the t test results obtained t count 23.214 and t table 0.68695 or t count> t table then there is a significant difference or HO is rejected, because HO is rejected then H1 is accepted. So it can be concluded that there are differences between children's mathematics learning outcomes before and after being given the smart pocket card learning media (picture cards and number cards). The last media effectiveness test was conducted at Aba 15 Teluk Kindergarten. In this effectiveness test the researcher used a sample of 40 children, obtained t count 24.137 and t table 0, 68067 or t count> from t table, so there is a significant difference or Ho is rejected. Because Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted, it can be concluded that there are differences between children's mathematics learning outcomes before and after being given the smart pocket card learning media (picture cards and number cards). From the results of the effectiveness test at the three schools above it proves that the learning media of smart poceket cards (picture cards and number cards) developed by this researcher can significantly improve the learning outcomes of early childhood mathematics in kindergarten group B Aba 15 Teluk, therefore it can it was concluded that the process carried out in the development of the model as well as the results obtained from the application of the smart pocket card learning media (picture cards and number cards) met the criteria of a good learning media that had validity, was practical, and was effectively used as an alternative learning media for improve children's learning outcomes in mathematics.
