Abstract

Early education services for children with autism are a place for early intervention for autistic children of pre-school age as a bridge to further education. Autism is a neurological development disorder under the age of 3 years with characteristics of communication and behavioral disorders. Pre-school age is a period of rapid brain development so early intervention or early education for children with autism is an attempt to reduce the manifestation of autism clinics. Development of early education service management for children with autism aims to intervene with autism from an early age in a comprehensive manner and in accordance with their growth and development. This study applies the Research and Development approach through four stages, namely (1) preliminary research, (2) model development, (3) validation, and (4) final model. Data were drawn using open and closed questionnaires and interviews in four early education service institutions for children with autism in Semarang. The data were processed using descriptive analysis, percentage, average, and qualitative analysis. The final model of early education service management for children with autism focuses on aspects of management which consist of (1) comprehensive planning based on the standard parameters by considering comorbidities and health status and (2) early education for children with autism carried out comprehensively and sustainably between teachers, parents, and medical personnel.

Abstract

A resistivity survey was carried out to study the level of groundwater pollution in the dumpsite at Awka Urban Anambra State. Depth, thickness, resistivity, and sediment at which contamination of groundwater occurred were also established. From the analysis, the dump site has four layers, contaminated topsoil, subsoil, rock fragment, and bedrock while the control side has four layers also which are, topsoil, subsoil, rock fragment, and bedrock. The effect of leachates can be seen at the dump site, the first layer (contaminated topsoil) with low resistivity values and this effect tends to affect some distance at the second layer (subsoil). The control site has no effect of leachate which shows high resistivity values at its first and second layer compare to that of the dump site. The iso-resistivity maps also reveal the variation between the dump site and control site, at the 5 m and 10 m plot of the iso-resistivity maps, the dump site (profile A to D), shows low resistivity values compare to the control site (profile E and F). At the 12 m depth, the resistivity values at the dump site and control site tend to be at a similar range, which explains that the effect of leachate disappears at 12 m depth. At 20 m depth, the resistivity values at the control site (Western side of the map) is lower than that of the dump site which could explain the effect of water-bearing materials or weathering of the rocks at that depth.

Abstract

The using of HOTS questions to stimulate the learners’ thinking skills is essential to meet the challenge of 21st century. However, we know little about to what extent and what particular aspects of HOTS implemented in Indonesia English National Examination. Therefore, in order to fulfil the gap, the present study attempts to identify the use of HOTS-based questions and what particular skills appearing under HOTS category in English National Examination. We examine one package of each English National Examination from 2013 until 2018. We analyse 210 multiple-choice items in which each examination contain 35 items of reading comprehension. The items are analyzed quantitatively through content analysis based on the aspects of HOTS in Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The researchers find that there is insufficient amount of HOTS questions in English National Examination. 157 items classified into the LOTS and only 53 (25.23%) items are classified into HOTS. The second finding is that the level of HOTS included in English National Examination 2013-2018 is only the level of Analyze. The Differentiating and Organizing are the subskills of the aspect of Analyze that are mostly included in all examinations. There is strong evidence for encouraging the test developers to provide adequate portions of HOTS-based items in English National Examination. Abstract

Everybody knows that education is the backbone of a nation. The countries which have realized that motto and invested a lot for a long time for sustainable development of the education sector of the country, they are now forerunner in innovation, world influence, employment, innovative thinking, world-class health care service, technology, ideological influence and even military advancement. They have diversified education investments which have had defused the progress in all sectors. On the contrary, there are many countries which are wealthier than many developed countries, but for creative ideas, educational advancement, climate change and even for major decisions, they rely on some specific advanced countries. These countries cannot ensure sustainable development of their own as they rely on others. Besides, some countries mostly depend on natural resources which are now facing constraint for plummeting of the price of those assets due to worldwide economic depression or the invention of alternative option. The countries which have the best education in the world, they have more researchers and diversified world-class education system and creativities to cope up with the changing world circumstances. Therefore, education financing opens up a variety of employment opportunities which leads to the reduction of the crime rate of a country—consequently, leads to the sustainable economic development of a nation.

Abstract

The problem of examination malpractices has persisted in many primary and secondary schools in Zambia for a decade now. Records show that there has been an annual recurrence of examination malpractices for the period 2008 to 2018. In 2018, the initial examination papers for Grades 9 and 12 had to be canceled and new ones set after the examination papers were leaked on social media. These malpractices reported in the last decade have the potential to negatively affect the quality of graduates from the concerned schools. It may further cast doubt on the validity and reliability of the certificates conferred. To a wider extent, examination malpractices have the potential to lead to cultural decay, increased criminality, social injustices and corruption in society. The driving factors to malpractices have been identified as macro and micro in nature. The study introduces a new model coined the 13-selfs model. Using the introduced model, the study proposes solutions to the internal factors. With this new model it is possible to nurture a student with higher confidence and integrity leading to the elimination of malpractices. The thirteen elements of the 13-Selfs model are self-confidence, self-esteem, self-motivation, self-determination, self-organization, self-equipped, self-sustenance, self-conviction, self-efficacy, self-assurance, self-sufficiency, self-control, self-defense. The proposed solutions to the macro factors include the use of modern technology such as drones to secure and deliver examination materials on the day of examination. The use of micro-chipped examination papers has also been proposed to monitor in real time the location and conditions of materials.

Abstract

Research on the speech of mild mentally retarded children from the syntactic and pragmatic perspective has not been widely conducted. Research on the speech of mild mentally retarded children was commonly conducted from the phonological perspective. This has encouraged this researcher to conduct this study. Despite experiencing various limitations, mild mentally retarded children are still categorized as children who can be educated to become semi-skilled workers. To become semi-skilled workers, they need good and polite language skills. The purpose of this study is, syntactically, to find out sentences structures, sentences types, and average length of speech and, pragmatically, to find out speech types and politeness that can be maximized in the utterances of the mild mentally retarded children. This is a qualitative study employing a cross-section method. The research subjects were 13 mild mentally retarded children. The research data were in the form of fragments of stories and conversations drawn through recording techniques, noting, observing proficient free involvement, and observing the involvement in skill for approximately three months. The data were analyzed using the pragmatic and syntactic techniques. The findings of this study: Syntactically, this study found speech using sentence structures of S-P, S-P-A, A-S-P-A, A-S-P, A-S-A-P, S-A-P, A-S-P-Ag; S-P-Ag; the sentence types found are simple sentences; and the MLU of 6.94. Pragmatically, there are types of (1) constative, (2) locutionary, (3) representative, directive, expressive, (4) directive, and (5) literal speeches; the observance of the tact maxim, agrement maxim, and generosity maxim and the violation of the tact maxim, the approbation maxim, the modesty maxim, and the sympathy maxim.. To minimize politeness violation, it is recommended that further research be conducted in larger amount of subjects in a longer period of time.
