Abstract

This study aims to analyze illocutionary speech acts in the film N?qah by Meshal Aljaser using pragmatic studies and John R. Searle's speech act theory. This study is a descriptive qualitative study with data in the form of dialogues in the film N?qah. The data collection techniques used are listening, documentation, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis is carried out through the process of identification, classification, and description based on the categories of speech acts proposed by Searle. The results of the study indicate that there are three types of illocutionary speech acts, namely assertive speech acts with four data, directive speech acts with five data, and expressive speech acts with two data. Assertive speech acts are used to convey information, opinions, and beliefs of the speaker. Directive speech acts are used to give orders, requests, prohibitions, and invitations. Meanwhile, expressive speech acts are used to express the feelings, attitudes, and emotional responses of the speaker. The findings of this study indicate that illocutionary speech acts have an important role in building interactions between characters, strengthening the communication context, and supporting the development of the storyline and character depiction in the film. This study also shows that pragmatic analysis of films can provide a deeper understanding of language functions, communication strategies, and the relationship between utterances, context, and speaker goals. This study enriches pragmatic research, particularly in the study of illocutionary speech acts.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine how educators teach the aesthetic concepts of Majaz (figurative language) and Tasybih (simile) through a process of negotiation of meaning. This qualitative research using a case study approach aims to analyze the pedagogical dynamics and learning trajectories of Balaghah at the Attaqwa Putra Islamic Boarding School. Data were collected through participatory classroom observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, and documentation of teaching materials and Pegon annotations. The results of the study had shown three main findings that are integrated into the Arabic rhetoric learning process. First, the selection and curation of teaching materials are carried out strategically through socio-cultural reconceptualization to bridge the gap between classical texts and the context of the lives of modern students. Second, the implementation of a layered learning strategy that combines inductive, deductive, analytical, and applicative approaches successfully facilitates the negotiation of meaning through scaffolding techniques and dialogic pauses. Third, the use of Socratic questioning techniques has been proven to accelerate the trajectory of students' cognitive maturity while fostering aesthetic sensitivity (dzauq) and intellectual satisfaction. The implications of this research confirm that the modernization of Arabic language learning in Islamic boarding schools does not have to eliminate local traditions such as sorogan and bandongan, but can be optimized as a pedagogical innovation based on Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) that fortifies students from textual literalism and supports the formation of a moderate religious character (Wasathiyyah).

Abstract

This study examines Ibn Sina's concept of humankind, which views humans as a unity of body and soul. Ibn Sina divides the soul into three levels: the vegetable, the hayawani, and the human, with the human soul as the center of consciousness, knowledge, and morality. This concept aligns with Islamic teachings, which emphasize the dignity of humans as creatures infused with a spirit by God and entrusted with the role of caliph on earth. This study uses a library method with a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach. The results of the study indicate that Ibn Sina's thinking is relevant for the development of holistic education that integrates physical, intellectual, and spiritual aspects, and can be applied in character building, leadership, and social life in the modern era.

Abstract

Background: The short story al-Ṭarīq 'abra al-Barzakh is a literary work that reflects the suffering of Sudanese refugees during the 1956–2005 conflict, which is important to study. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the forms of suffering experienced by Sudanese refugees in the short story “al-Ṭarīq 'abra al-Barzakh.” Method: This study uses a library method, with the short story al-Ṭarīq 'abra al-Barzakh as the primary data source. The analysis focuses on textual elements such as narrative, dialogue, and description. Wellek and Warren's the sociology of content of the literary work approach is used, supported by Agamben's theory of bare life to understand how the suffering of refugees is represented in the story. Result and Discussion: The results of the study show five forms of suffering, namely physical, psychological, social, existential, and spiritual. This is caused by the collapse of Sudan's socio-political structure, which places refugees in a state of bare life, namely biological existence without social or legal protection. This forces refugees to live without protection, without a country, and without access to basic needs. Conclusions and Implications: This study shows that short stories function as social documents that record the tragedy of displacement while also showing how humans are reduced to bare life in situations of war. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of literature as a medium of collective memory and a means of understanding trauma, marginalization, and the dynamics of humanity in the study of displacement.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of patriarchy and female resistance through the character of Fathiya in Yusuf Idris’s short story An-Nadahah (1962). Employing Kate Millett’s radical feminist theory, the research analyzes how patriarchal domination operates through sexual violence, male passivity, and the internalization of oppressive values within female consciousness. Using a qualitative approach with close reading techniques, the findings reveal that patriarchy functions not only as an external system of male domination, embodied by Afandi’s sexual violence, but also through Hamed’s silence and failure as a husband. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that Fathiya internalizes patriarchal norms that frame silence, shame, and self-sacrifice as moral imperatives. This analysis highlights how patriarchy controls women both structurally and psychologically, reinforcing the relevance of radical feminist theory in literary criticism. Keywords: Patriarchy, Radical Feminism, and Yusuf Idris’s Short Story “An-Nadahah”

Abstract

Variations among Qur’anic readings pose a continuing linguistic question because authenticated recitations may realize different Arabic morphological and syntactic patterns while transmitting a coherent scriptural discourse. This study examines how ?Abduh al-R?jih? explains such variation in al-Lahj?t al-?Arabiyyah f? al-Qir???t al-Qur??niyyah. It employs a qualitative library and document-study design. The unit of analysis is each qir???t example that al-R?jih? associates with Arabic morphology or syntax; the primary corpus is his discussion of these two levels, read comparatively with the Qur’anic passages and supporting works already cited in the manuscript. Relevant passages were identified, documented, grouped by linguistic category, compared across reported readings, and interpreted in relation to the grammatical explanation supplied by the sources. The analysis shows that morphological variation concerns pronouns, nominal forms, verbal patterns, intensive forms, tense or aspect, substitution, and omission or retention. Syntactic variation concerns grammatical gender, the government of m?, the separator pronoun, dual marking, verb–subject agreement, exception and substitution, case assignment, and word order. These variants generally represent grammatically licensed alternatives; some alter form or emphasis without changing the central proposition, whereas others invite different syntactic analyses. The study concludes that al-R?jih?’s framework connects qir???t evidence with historically attested Arabic usage and offers a structured basis for teaching morphology and syntax through Qur’anic examples. Its conclusions remain limited to the selected corpus and do not cover phonetic or semantic variation.
