Abstract

Abstract

Perna viridis shell powder is an abundant biomaterial waste in coastal areas of Indonesia and has potential for use as a reinforcement in composite materials. This study investigated the effect of varying the weight fraction of Perna viridis shell powder on the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites fabricated through a degassing process. We used an experimental approach with filler contents of 0%, 25%, 35%, and 45%, with shell powder passing through mesh 100 (approximately 149 µm). Material characterization included macrographic observation, porosity measurement, Charpy impact testing, and tensile testing. The results showed that filler content variations affected the composite structure and mechanical properties. Increasing the filler content improved tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and impact resistance up to a certain composition, while elongation decreased. The highest impact resistance was obtained at 25% filler (0.071 J/mm²), whereas the optimum tensile strength of 32.56 N/mm² was achieved at 35% filler. The highest Young’s modulus, 14.32 N/mm², was obtained at 45% filler. These results demonstrate the potential of Perna viridis shell powder as a reinforcement for epoxy-based composites.

Abstract

Anadara granosa shell waste is an abundant biomaterial in Indonesian coastal areas and has potential as a reinforcement for environmentally friendly composite materials. The manufacturing process influences composite quality, particularly filler distribution and porosity formation during mixing. This study aimed to investigate the effects of sonication methods using full wave, semi wave, and degassing modes on the physical and mechanical characteristics of epoxy composites reinforced with Anadara granosa shell powder. The composites were prepared using epoxy resin and hardener at a 2:1 ratio, then shell powder was added at 35% of the total mixture volume. The mixture was homogenized using a magnetic stirrer and subsequently subjected to the respective sonication treatments before molding and curing for 24 hours at room temperature. Material characterization included porosity measurement based on Archimedes’ principle, tensile testing according to ASTM D638, and Charpy impact testing based on ISO 179. The test results were used to evaluate the effects of the sonication methods on porosity, tensile strength, and impact toughness and to identify the most effective method for improving composite quality.

Abstract

Shellfish waste is an abundant biomaterial in Indonesia's coastal areas, but its use as a value-added material remains limited. Its high calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) content makes it a potential particulate filler for epoxy resin-based composites. This study aims to analyze the effect of different shell powder types, namely Asian moon scallop (Amusium pleuronectes), blood cockle (Anadara granosa), and green mussel (Perna viridis), on the mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites. The composites were fabricated by mold casting using 100-mesh particles. Mechanical testing included tensile tests per ASTM D638 and impact tests per ISO 179. The results showed that shell powder type affected the mechanical properties of the composites. The composite containing green mussel (Perna viridis) shell powder exhibited the highest tensile and impact strengths compared with the other types. These results show that shellfish waste has potential as an environmentally friendly natural filler to improve composite mechanical properties, support sustainable material development, and increase the added value of fishery waste.

Abstract

As a maritime country, Indonesia generates substantial amounts of shell waste that remain underutilized. This study aimed to utilize Perna viridis shell waste as a filler in epoxy resin composites and investigate the effect of particle size on their physical and mechanical properties. We used a quantitative experimental approach, fabricating specimens using the mold casting method. The composite contained 35% filler by mass. Tensile testing followed ASTM D638 Type I, and impact testing followed ISO 179 using the Charpy method. We also performed porosity testing and macrographic observations to evaluate the material structure. The results showed that increasing the mesh size from 80 to 120 reduced porosity from 18.61% to 13.37% and increased tensile strength from 28.77 to 33.04 N/mm². In contrast, impact toughness decreased from 0.051 to 0.047 J/mm². Finer particles improved composite density and interfacial bonding, resulting in higher tensile strength but greater brittleness under impact loading.

Abstract

Amusium pleuronectes is a bivalve species commonly found in Indonesia and has potential as a source of filler material for composite applications. This study investigated the effect of degassing time on the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites filled with Amusium pleuronectes shell powder. Shell powder with a mesh size of 100 was incorporated at 35% of the total mixture volume, consisting of epoxy resin, hardener, and filler. Degassing was performed using a sonicator for 5, 10, and 15 minutes. The composites were characterized through porosity, macrographic, tensile, and impact tests, with three specimens prepared for each variation. The results showed that 10 minutes of degassing produced the highest tensile strength (29.63 N/mm²) and impact toughness (0.051 J/mm²). In contrast, the highest yield strength and Young’s modulus were obtained at 5 minutes of degassing. These findings indicate that 10 minutes of degassing provides the best balance between tensile strength and impact toughness, demonstrating the potential of shell waste as a filler for epoxy-based composite materials.

Abstract

Mororejo Village, Kendal Regency, has abundant seaweed potential, but it yields low economic value (IDR 3,000/kg) as it is sold raw. The partner, BUMDes "Moro Berkah", also faces challenges with manual bookkeeping and limited local marketing. This Community Service (PkM) program aims to increase the economic value of seaweed, digitalise financial records, and expand the market through appropriate technology transfer. Methods included providing a seaweed milling machine (disk mill), drafting hygienic production SOPs, training in Microsoft Excel-based bookkeeping, and implementing digital marketing strategies. The results show a significant increase in the partner's capacity. The team successfully transformed raw dried seaweed into high-quality powder, boosting the selling price from IDR 3,000/kg to IDR 85,000/kg. Financial digitalisation helps BUMDes managers handle cash flow transparently and accurately. Furthermore, digital marketing training strengthens product branding and reduces dependence on middlemen by expanding online market access.
