Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The subgrade around Dusun Paloh 80, Desa Tanjung Rejo, Percut Sei Tuan, Deli Serdang Regency, is a clay-type soil with fine grains and low stability. Therefore, a soil stabilization method must be used to achieve a more stable soil. The purpose of this study was to determine the value of clay soil swelling and the effect of adding palm shell ash and calcium sulfate dihydrate at percentages of 0%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and 12% on the plasticity index and shrinkage limit. Soil stabilization is the mixing of soil with certain materials to improve its technical properties and meet specific requirements. In this study, clay soil stabilization was achieved using palm shell ash and gypsum. Tests were conducted based on the ASTM method. The largest swelling occurred at 12% in a 14-day soaking at 13.08%, and the smallest at 12% in a 1-day soaking at 0.57%. The correlation between the plasticity index and the swelling limit is that the greater the plasticity index, the greater the swelling; meanwhile, the greater the shrinkage limit, the smaller the swelling.

Abstract

The problem of household waste management remains a significant environmental issue in rural areas, including in Klambir V Kebun Village, Hamparan Perak District, Deli Serdang Regency. The low level of public understanding regarding waste sorting and the habit of throwing waste into drains and rivers has the potential to cause environmental pollution and health problems. This Community Service Program aims to increase public understanding and awareness of proper waste management through the separation of organic and inorganic waste, the utilization of organic waste using the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) composting method, and the strengthening of environmental awareness through river clean-up activities. The implementation method uses a participatory approach through outreach, lectures, discussions, and hands-on practice involving the community and village officials. The materials presented cover types of waste, household waste management, and the application of the BSF composting method. The river clean-up activities serve as a concrete implementation of efforts to maintain environmental quality. The results demonstrate increased public understanding of waste management and awareness of the importance of maintaining river cleanliness. This program contributes to encouraging behavioral change toward more responsible and sustainable environmental management.

Abstract

The ecosystem crisis along the Deli Riverbanks, driven by the accumulation of plastic waste, demands technical solutions that are both educational and sustainable. This community service program aims to transform domestic waste into modular construction materials using the ecobrick method while simultaneously fostering environmental character among children in Jalan Badur. The methods employed included audio-visual literacy sessions, collective waste collection actions, and technical workshops on modular material production. The results demonstrate that participants were capable of producing ecobricks that meet the density criteria for simple building materials. Beyond the technical success, the program yielded positive impacts on ecological behavioral changes and improved health aspects through nutritional assistance. The strategic value of this initiative lies in the conversion of waste into functional products (a civil engineering approach) integrated with behavioral psychology interventions and public health awareness.

Abstract

Medan Belawan District is a strategic coastal area in Medan City that has important ecological, social, and economic functions. The presence of mangroves and urban trees in this area acts as green infrastructure that supports coastal protection, carbon storage, biota habitat, and urban environmental resilience. This community service activity aims to strengthen coastal social ecological literacy, increase participants' understanding of the carbon valuation of mangroves and urban trees, and encourage collective awareness in supporting the development of Eco Forest City in Medan Belawan. The activities were carried out through excursion studies, field observations, academic discussions, ecological data interpretation, and dissemination of results through online mass media. The community service material was supported by data on vegetation inventory, mangrove cover, tree health, carbon storage, carbon economic value, and priority management zoning. The results of the activity showed that mangroves are a dominant component of Medan Belawan's public green spaces, namely 157 of 218 inventory units or 72.02%. The dominant species is Avicennia marina with 105 individuals or 48.17%. Mangrove cover increased from 393.28 ha in 2005 to 1,110.00 ha in 2025. Carbon storage is estimated to reach 35,106 kg C or 128,840 kg CO2e, with a carbon economic value of Rp471,091,349. The outputs of the activity include increased participant literacy, recommendations for coastal green space management, activity documentation, community service articles, and news releases in Borneonews. This activity demonstrates that community service based on scientific data can be a bridge between research, field learning, communities, and coastal management policies.
