Abstract

This study examines how Akhlak teachers design and enact strategies for using digital instructional materials to raise student learning motivation in a traditional Indonesian pesantren setting. Employing a qualitative case study design at Pondok Pesantren Darul Ulum Rimbo Bujang in Jambi Province, the research drew on participatory observation across twelve weeks of instruction, semi structured interviews with two Akhlak teachers, four eleventh grade students, and one pesantren administrator, and a documentary review of lesson plans and digital teaching artifacts. Data were analyzed through the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model, with credibility established through source and method triangulation, prolonged engagement, and member checking. The analysis surfaces three interlocking findings. First, baseline motivation was depressed by a combination of one way lecturing, low perceived relevance, fatigue from a dense pesantren timetable, and constrained digital infrastructure. Second, teachers responded by gradually building Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge through self directed learning and peer collaboration, then redesigning Akhlak content into short videos, animated narratives of prophetic exemplars, and case based e modules circulated through a controlled channel. Third, a flipped blended arrangement, paired with formative quizzes and reflective journals, produced observable shifts in attendance, classroom participation, and the students’ capacity to connect Islamic ethical concepts to lived dilemmas. The study argues that digital materials become motivationally effective in pesantren only when teacher competence, content design, and institutional adaptation move together

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) in fostering and strengthening attitudes of tolerance among students of different religious backgrounds within the school environment. The method used is a literature study. The research findings reveal that Islamic Religious Education plays a significant role in shaping tolerant attitudes in schools. IRE teachers act as role models as well as educators who convey the values of tolerance to students. The implementation of tolerance values within the school reflects the diversity of the surrounding community and highlights the importance of education in instilling mutual respect among followers of different religions. Therefore, this study recommends that the Islamic Religious Education curriculum be further strengthened to cultivate a young generation that values tolerance and lives in harmony. In addition, support from parents and the wider community is essential in creating inclusive religious education that prioritizes tolerance values. Thus, the results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of more meaningful religious education with a positive impact on the social life of the community.

Abstract

Abstract

The degradation of peatland ecosystems, pollution of the Batanghari River, and the increasing risk of forest and land fires in Jambi Province demand educational responses that are not only technocratic but also grounded in spiritual and axiological values. The Qur’anic concept of Khalifah fil Ard offers a relevant theological and ethical framework for fostering students’ environmental responsibility. This study analyzes the implementation of this concept in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) and its impact on strengthening students’ environmental responsibility in educational institutions across Jambi Province. The research employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design involving 248 junior secondary school students (SMP/MTs) and eight Islamic Religious Education teachers from Jambi City and Muaro Jambi Regency. Quantitative data were collected using an expert-validated Environmental Responsibility Character Scale (α = 0.87), while qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of instructional documents. The results of the paired-sample t-test revealed a significant improvement in students’ environmental responsibility scores (t(247) = 14.32, p < 0.001, d = 1.92). Qualitative findings identified a four-phase implementation model consisting of: (1) tadabbur alam (contemplation of nature), (2) theological reflection, (3) practical environmental action based on Jambi Malay local wisdom, and (4) collaborative evaluation. Supporting factors included the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, teachers’ pedagogical competence, and strong school–community partnerships. Major challenges involved limited instructional time, the scarcity of contextual ecological teaching materials, and unequal access to digital infrastructure in peripheral areas. The study concludes that the concept of Khalifah fil Ard is effective as an axiological framework for Islamic Religious Education when integrated with reflective pedagogy and local environmental problem-based projects. The study recommends the development of Jambi-contextualized teaching modules, professional training for Islamic Religious Education teachers in Islamic ecopedagogy, and cross-sector collaboration involving educational authorities and religious institutions to strengthen value-based environmental education.
