Abstract

Learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, is the focus of attention not only by school teachers but also all stakeholders involved. Various efforts have been made to improve the quality of the learning process and curriculum in these fields. The activities students do during learning are influenced by motivation, so motivation is very important for students to complete tasks and build knowledge. This study aims to analyze the improvement of students' learning motivation by using the STEM-Engineering Design Process (EDP) on the topic of the Solar System. This study used a pre-experimental method with One Group Pretest-Posttest. The data collection tool used in this study is the Motivation Sefl regulation questionnaire. This research was conducted in one of the schools in Bandung, Indonesia. The subjects in this study were 25 seventh-grade students consisting of 11 boys and 14 girls. The results showed a significant increase in students' learning motivation with a mean pretest of 76% and a mean posttest of 89%. Based on the average N-Gain score of 0, 51, the four dimensions are interpreted as obtaining a moderate N-Gain. Based on the study's results, it was found that STEM-Engineering Design Process (EDP) learning can increase students' learning motivation, especially in science lessons.

Abstract

Applying STEM integration in education already become a concern because there is still a lack of STEM integration in schools. This study aims to analyze STEM career interest among junior high school students in Indonesia and analyze the factors that influence student interest and differ by grade. The researcher conducted survey research by adapting the STEM-CIS instrument in the shape of a 5-point Likert scale. The questionnaire consists of 44 questions with 4 dimensions of STEM and 8 open-ended questions. The survey was administered to 1510 junior high school students in several provinces in Indonesia. This finding obtained the value of the average and standard deviation for each dimension of STEM. The results also obtained factors influenced student career Interest in STEM such as internal and environmental. This study can encourage science educators to improve STEM facilities and apply STEM learning to encourage students to pursue STEM careers in the future.

Abstract

Academic achievement is not only influenced by their learning process but also by emotional and societal factors. This study examines the students profiles regarding scientific literacy and emotional factors. Also, the correlation on both sides is studied in one population. This study used a quantitative survey research design for 132 students in 9 grade secondary school. The emotional factors were divided into interest, enjoyment, and engagement regarding science learning, while the scientific literacy used PISA 2015 test items. It found that the result of scientific literacy among students is in the low category, with the average in both of them being 28.34 out of 100, with explain phenomena scientifically as the highest competency achievement, followed by design and evaluate scientific enquiry in the second highest and lastly interpret data and evidence scientifically as the lowest achievement competency. There are interest, enjoyment, and engagement factors in emotional factors, and the general average among the three is 3.02 out of 5.00, which includes the neutral category. The highest emotional factors for science learning are interest, enjoyment, and engagement, as the smallest value. The correlational study of scientific literacy to emotional factors was also conducted and showed 0.835, which includes a very strong category. Therefore, this study implicated insight into the curriculum design and training program for teachers to find better ways to accommodate the emotional needs of students

Abstract

Attitude Toward Science in the PISA global ranking shows a low-average. This study analyzed the effect of STEAM-Design Process on students’ attitude toward science in the topic of optical instruments. Quantitative research method alongside a quasi-experimental design was utilized in this study. The experimental class used the STEAM-Design Process whereas the control group used conventional learning. The sample for this study were 8th-grade students from a public school in Tasikmalaya Regency, Indonesia. The experimental group consisted of 38 students, while the control group consisted of 30 students. Students ages ranged from 13-14 years old. The data obtained in this study used 60 statements form a questionnaire with two open-ended questions. The findings revealed a significant difference in attitude toward science between the experiment and control class. The N-Gain score in the experiment class is 0.32 and control class 0.12, which is described as medium and low improvement. Based on this research, teaching through STEAM- Design Process is effective approach that can be significantly improve attitude toward science. Educators should consider integrating this model more broadly in secondary science curricula. It is recommended to explore the long-term effects and explore ways to better support the emotional dimensions of student attitudes.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out the difference in science process skill and learning achievement between students who are taught using guided inquiry model integrated with peer instruction and conventional method in VII students in one of the junior high schools in Malang. The method used is quasy-experimental with only post-test group design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling technique, from the 10 population of VII grade students; the researchers selected two classes which were considered to have the same initial skill with total 32 students in each class to be the experimental class and the control class. Instruments used were the observation sheets to measure the science process skill and the test of multiple choices to measure the learning achievement. The researchers gained average score of 81 for science process skill in experimental class and 58 in control class, while the average score of 77.8 for learning achievement in experimental class and 71.3 in control class as the result of the data analysis. The hypothesis test used T-test, that was the independent sample T-test on Microsoft excel by looking up the score of Ttable on the rate of sig 0.05 for the science process skill and it gained Tcount > Ttable (18.846 > 1.669), while the learning process gained Tcount > Ttable (8.465 > 1.669). It was concluded that the guided inquiry model integrated with peer instruction can improve student’s science process skill and learning achievement compared to conventional method
