Abstract

Rumination, defined as repetitive thinking about negative emotional experiences, plays a critical role in maintaining psychological distress and shaping individuals’ behavioral patterns. However, prior research has been predominantly quantitative, offering limited insight into the subjective lived experiences of rumination. This study aims to explore individuals' lived experiences of rumination related to past events and to examine its role in shaping recurring life patterns and its implications for personal potential development. A qualitative phenomenological design was employed, involving four purposively selected participants with experiences of rumination. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and field notes, and analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. The findings revealed four major themes: rumination about past trauma, the formation of recurring life patterns, impacts on personal potential, and coping mechanisms. The results indicate that rumination functions as a linking mechanism between past experiences and present responses, forming a maladaptive psychological cycle that sustains negative emotions and constrains individual development. Furthermore, the coping strategies employed by participants were largely insufficient to disrupt this cycle. This study concludes that rumination is a complex phenomenon involving the interaction of cognitive, emotional, and experiential processes, highlighting the need for multidimensional interventions that integrate cognitive, emotional regulation, social, and spiritual components to effectively break recurring patterns and optimize individual potential.

Abstract

Indonesia's multicultural landscape provides a rich context for examining the relationship between local cultural philosophy and Cultural Intelligence (CQ). This study investigates how the Huma Betang Philosophy of the Dayak community in Palangka Raya City, Central Kalimantan, shapes and reinforces Cultural Intelligence among local residents amid rapid social change. Huma Betang, the traditional longhouse of the Dayak people, embodies core values of togetherness, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), tolerance, and deliberative consensus, which collectively serve as a cultural foundation for navigating diversity. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected through unstructured in-depth interviews with four purposively selected participants, comprising community leaders, cultural researchers, a former mayor, and an academic anthropologist, all with deep knowledge of Dayak culture and the Huma Betang philosophy. The findings reveal that the Huma Betang Philosophy significantly strengthens all four dimensions of Cultural Intelligence: Cognitive CQ through a profound understanding of Dayak cultural history; Metacognitive CQ through critical reflection on cultural change driven by globalization and digitalization; Motivational CQ through a deep sense of cultural pride and responsibility toward heritage preservation; and Behavioral CQ through adaptive and inclusive actions in multicultural interactions. However, the implementation of this philosophy also faces considerable challenges, including external cultural influence via social media, intergenerational value differences, and the commercialization of cultural heritage. The study concludes that with appropriate educational programs, active youth engagement, and strategic use of digital media, the Huma Betang Philosophy can serve as a sustainable cultural resource for maintaining Dayak identity.

Abstract

Counseling is a professional assistance process in solving problems. However, in order to provide counseling, it is necessary to develop basic counseling skills. The objective of basic counseling skills training at PKBM 31 Jakarta is to improve the professional competence of educators in solving student problems so that they can create an inclusive, responsive learning environment that supports the holistic growth of students. The method used in community service is Service Learning (SL). The training activities in this service consist of three stages, namely (a) identification of learning problems at PKBM 31 Jakarta; (b) provision of basic counseling skills material; (c) counseling practice; (d) post-training evaluation. Based on the results of the community service, the following data was obtained from the problem identification: (1) there is a lack of knowledge among educators in overcoming psychological and social problems and the diverse learning needs of students at PKBM 31 Jakarta, while there are no educators with a background in guidance and counseling to help solve these problems; (2) Knowledge and understanding related to basic counseling skills for educators increased, enabling them to identify student problems and understand the appropriate responses and strategies for resolving student issues. Thus, basic counseling skills training for educators at PKBM 31 Jakarta was effective in improving educators' knowledge and understanding in resolving student problems.
