Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of computational thinking (CT) ability in students as witnessed by the author among prospective teachers, along with the changes that came about within the learning system in the move from face-to-face to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study specifically seeks to improve students’ mathematical computational thinking ability through the use of interactive multimedia-based teaching materials based on initial mathematical ability to support online learning. This quantitative study (quasiexperimental) was conducted at two universities, namely, Universities Islam Riau (UIR) and Universitas Pasir Pengaraian (UPP) in Indonesia. The research subjects were prospective mathematics teachers taking algebraic structure at the UIR (an experimental class) and the prospective mathematics teacher course at the UPP (control class) in the 2021/2022 academic year. The data were collected method through a computational thinking ability test and interview, and the test results data are processed using a statistical test. Normality is assessed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, and homogeneity is assessed using the Levene and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests. From the two-way ANOVA test, a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05 was obtained. This indicates that an increase is observed in the mathematical computational thinking ability of students who receive learning using interactive multimedia-based teaching material based on initial mathematical ability.

Abstract

Learning styles refer to the methods students use in absorbing and processing information. This study aims to look at learning style factors in the achievement of mathematical computational thinking skills of mathematics education students in the Algebraic Structure course. This research method is a correlational method with a quantitative approach. The research subjects were all mathematics education students who took the Algebraic Structure course in the 2023/2024 academic year as many as 34 students. The data collection methods used include: (1) computational thinking test; (2) questionnaire; and (3) documentation. The research data were processed with the Product Moment correlation statistical test. The results obtained a positive correlation of 0.44 which indicates that there is a positive relationship between learning styles and computational thinking in the observed students. That is, overall, individuals who have a more effective or intensive learning style also tend to have better computational thinking ability.

Abstract

Limited mathematics learning resources in schools mean that teachers only use textbooks and worksheets provided by the school. This is also a lack of teacher knowledge and skills in utilizing a variety of learning resources in mathematics learning. This research aims to produce LKPD with nuances of local Malay wisdom in Rokan Hulu, Riau. This type of research is research and development (R&D). The development of this LKPD follows the ADDIE development model. The LKPD developed met the validation criteria, namely an average of 4.41 was obtained in the valid category. This shows that this LKPD is suitable for use in mathematics learning. Implementation of the use of LKPD in mathematics learning through the classroom action research stage, which was carried out by the mathematics subject teacher at SMPN 1 Rambah, which was carried out in 2 cycles. The test results in cycle I were 24 students or 75% complete and 8 students or 25% incomplete. The test results in cycle II showed that all students completed, namely 32 students or 100% completion. This shows that this LKPD is effective and practical for use in mathematics learning. Thus, this LKPD meets the criteria, is valid, practical and effective for use in mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement of mathematical communication skills through the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in eighth-grade students of MTs N 1 Rokan Hulu. This type of research is a Quasi Experiment with the Nonequivalent Pretest Posttest Control Group Design research design. The population in this study was eighth-grade students of MTs N 1 Rokan Hulu. Random sampling was done, resulting in class VIIID as the experimental group and class VIIIC as the control group. The experimental group applied the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model, while the control group applied conventional learning. Hypothesis testing used the Mann-Whitney test because the data were not normally distributed. The calculation results obtained a z-score of 2.61 and a z-table value of 1.96 with a significance level of α = 0.05. Since the calculated z-score > the critical value from the table, H0 was rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that there is an improvement in mathematical communication skills through the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in eighth-grade students of MTs N 1 Rokan Hulu.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is an improvement in the mathematical connection abilities of eighth-grade students at SMP N 7 Tambusai through the Brain-Based Learning model. This quasi-experimental research uses a randomized control group pretest-posttest design. The population includes all eighth-grade students at SMP N 7 Tambusai. Samples were taken using simple random sampling, resulting in two classes as samples: class VIII A as the experimental group and class VIII B as the control group. The research instrument was a test of mathematical connection abilities. Data from the test results were analyzed to test the hypothesis. Before hypothesis testing, a prerequisite normality test using the Liliefors test was conducted, which showed that the data were not normally distributed. Subsequently, hypothesis testing was carried out using the Mann Whitney test. The results indicated that Zcount > Ztable, specifically 3.40 > 1.96 for α = 0.05, leading to the rejection of H0. Thus, it can be concluded that there is an improvement in the mathematical connection abilities of eighth-grade students at SMP N 7 Tambusai through the Brain-Based Learning model in the 2019/2020 academic year.

Abstract

This study used the guided discovery learning model to (1) determine students' mathematics learning outcomes in class VIII probability material at SMP Negeri Wonggeduku. (2) to determine the effectiveness of the guided discovery learning model on students' mathematics learning outcomes in class VIII opportunity materials at SMP Negeri Wonggeduku. The type of research used is a quasi-experimental or (quasi-experimental) research design with a nonequivalent posttest-only control group design. The number of samples in the study was 50, divided into 25 samples for the experimental class and 25 for the control class. The sampling technique is random sampling. The data collection technique is a written test. There are two data analysis techniques, namely descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The descriptive analysis results showed that the experimental class's average learning outcomes, with a value of 70,83, were higher than the control class, with a value of 63,06. In contrast, the results of the inferential analysis obtained the value of t count = 2,178 > tel 1,677. So, the research test shows that ho is rejected, H0 is rejected, and H1 is accepted. Namely, the average mathematics learning outcomes of students who receive guided discovery learning models are more effective than students who receive conventional learning.

Abstract

The student's ability to comprehend mathematical concepts remains a primary concern that needs improvement. This issue often arises due to the dominant role of teachers in the learning process, which can lead students to become passive. This research investigates the impact of using the Guided Inquiry instructional model on students' mathematical concept comprehension. The research method employed is quasi-experimental, involving 10th-grade students at SMAN 2 Rambah Hilir as the population. Sample selection was done using the simple random sampling method, resulting in two student groups: class X.B as the control group and class X.E as the experimental group. Data were collected through a specially designed test technique to measure students' mathematical concept comprehension. The test instrument underwent validation, difficulty level analysis, discrimination power assessment, and reliability analysis. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney statistical test, yielding a calculated zscore of 4.67, while the critical ztable value was 1.96. These results indicate that the calculated zscore > critical ztable value indicates a significant positive impact of implementing the Guided Inquiry model on the mathematical concept comprehension of 10th-grade students at SMAN 2 Rambah Hilir.
