Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study is aimed to examine the structure and the type of relative clause in English, the role of the noun head and grammatical relations derived noun of the relative clause in English. Lexical Functional Grammar Theory or LFG and the theory of typology are applied in this study. Qualitative method is commonly used in this study. Observation method is used to collect the data, while the distributional method is conducted to analyze the data. The result of the data is presented with informal method. The results showed that based on the structure, relative clause in English can be devided into two types, they are formal and relational type. In typology, relative clause in English can be devided into restrictive and non-restrictive relative clause. English relative clause is a post-nominal type based on the position of the head noun, because the relative clause is located after the noun and it can fill two function in the main clause and in the relative clause. The grammatical relations derived noun of the relative clause in English are: (1) SUBJ in main clause as well as in relative clause, (2) OBJ in the main clause as well as in the relative clause, and (3) OBL in the main clause and SUBJ in relative clause.

Abstract

Transition signals are the essential elements to achieve a well-structured text. The ideas in the text need to connect to each other. It will be difficult for the reader to understand the sequence if the ideas are simply just exposed by the writer without being related to each other. Students’ competency and ability in English academic writing overviewed from their competence in constructing sentences. Therefore, this research aimed to find out the use of transition signals and their accuracy in students’ community service report. The research used a descriptive quantitative method. The data were taken from students’ community service report written by the seventh semester English literature students of Foreign Languages Study Program of Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. The finding of this research showed that the total number of transition signals used by the students in their community service report were 303 and classified into eight types of transition signals. Transition signals to introduce sequence and logically order ideas was mostly used and transition signals to emphasize ideas was least used by the students. From the whole types of transition signals, the average usage accuracy was above 60%.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the syntactic function of coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences within the transcript of Adam Sandler’s stand-up comedy video Best of The Sandman. It focuses on syndetic coordination and the constituent structure of compound sentences, illustrated through tree diagrams. The data were collected through observation by transcribing and analyzing the comedic monologue. This qualitative study draws on three linguistic frameworks: Oshima & Hogue (2007) for sentence type classification, Aarts et al. (2006) for coordination theory, and Brown & Miller (2020) for syntactic structure analysis. The findings reveal that only four of the seven FANBOYS coordinating conjunctions were used in the transcript and, but, or, and so with and being the most frequent, appearing in 67 out of 81 compound sentences (82.72%). Coordinating conjunctions are shown to play a crucial role in shaping humor and maintaining coherence throughout the performance. The tree diagram analysis further clarifies the syntactic relationships within compound sentences, underscoring the value of syntax in understanding spoken discourse in comedic contexts.

Abstract

English has distinctive characteristics that may differ from those of a student’s native language, and it is essential to grasp the differences. That is why it is crucial for students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to understand the nuances of English pronunciation because a mispronunciation of a word may result in a lack of comprehension. The objective of this study is to identify the mispronunciation made by students in their pursuit of fluency in English. It employed a descriptive qualitative approach. In order to collect the data, the EFL students were required to read ten prepared English sentences, which had been selected according to the topic that they had been learning. In this study, Davies' theory was used as a reference, particularly in relation to English phonemes. The results demonstrated that there were pronunciation errors in six vowel sounds, three diphthongs, and six consonant sounds. When pronouncing a word in a sentence, EFL students tend to be influenced by their first language. Therefore, the acquisition of knowledge regarding the phonemic differences inherent to the English language will have a beneficial effect on the advancement of the language skills of students engaged in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) studies.

Abstract

This study investigates the phonological strategies of assimilation and elision in Eminem’s rap performance, focusing on two songs: Not Alike and Lucky You. While elision and assimilation are common in casual or fast speech, their usage in rap is often strategic, supporting rapid articulation, rhythmic precision, and stylistic expressiveness. The research applies a qualitative descriptive method, using close auditory analysis and phonetic transcription to identify patterns of connected speech. The theoretical framework draws on Generative Phonology (Chomsky & Halle, 1968) and Connected Speech Phenomena (Roach, 2009), which are particularly relevant for understanding systematic sound variation in dynamic, performance-based contexts like rap. The analysis reveals frequent occurrences of /?/-elision in -ing words (e.g., thinkin’, runnin’) and the omission of /t/, /d/, and /ð/ in clusters, particularly in Not Alike, highlighting syllabic efficiency and metrical tightness. Assimilation, slightly more dominant in Lucky You, mainly occurs as nasal place assimilation and palatalization, enabling smoother transitions and faster delivery aligned with the beat. These findings demonstrate intentional usage of phonological simplification to enhance musical fluency and rhythmic control. This study illustrates how rap integrates linguistic and musical performance, offering insights into how classical phonological rules are creatively manipulated through rule ordering and surface variation. Beyond theoretical relevance, the findings have practical implications for pronunciation teaching, prosodic awareness, and performance linguistics. Future research could explore cross-artist comparisons or listener perception of such reduced forms in real-time processing.
