Abstract

The digital era nowadays allows users to gain information easily and quickly. Many various kinds of search engines allow readers to find news in accordance with the information they need. However, in search engine usage, not all of the readers will look for the less popular news. According to Fintham, et al (2018) the readers only access the mainstream media sites with the reliability of a source of Uniform Resource Locator (URL). This has happened because those media has built a reputable image for the readers. However, the less popular media has limited entry-level in their search engines which results in their ways to change into clickbait strategy. Eye-catching headlines become the primary target in order to bring out the curiosity for the readers. This leads to change media’s position to be partisan where they make headlines that tend to focus on clicks only. The relevance of the news has not become a major priority. According to Muttaqin (2008) in writing news journalists are not allowed to enter personal opinions in written news. It clearly shows that the media’s position should be neutral. The news sites which only emphasize clicking need to be questioned. Therefore, this research is necessary to be conducted in order to analyze the standpoint of Indonesia’s online media through a post-truth perspective. Library research and close-reading methods are employed in this analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the position of the media in the digital age is increasingly unclear because most media no longer uphold the principles of journalism that Indonesian journalists present the news equally and fairly, including prioritizing accuracy, and not giving confusing facts and opinions.

Abstract

Program pengabdian yang akan dilakukan di SD Negeri Penggaron Kidul, Semarang, adalah program pendampingan adaptasi teknologi pembelajaran bagi guru-guru di SD Negeri Penggaron Kidul. SDN Penggaron Kidul menjadi salah satu sekolah yang termasuk dalam daftar sekolah 3T (Tertinggal, Terluar dan Terdepan) berdasarkan pada kategori lokasi, sarana dan prasarana [1]. Sekolah tersebut menjadi target sasaran sekolah prioritas untuk didorong meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran untuk memaksimalkan implementasi kurikulum merdeka. Merespon hal ini, program pengabdian masyarajat berupa pelatihan adaptasi teknologi dimaksudkan untuk membekali dan mendukung para guru SDN Penggaron Kidul untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran dengan memanfaatkan teknologi pembelajaran berbasis web dan bersifat open source. Metode pelaksanaan yang digunakan adalah metode pre-test dan post-test serta partisipatori dengan melibatkan seluruh peserta atau guru untuk berpartisipasi aktif dalam praktek adaptasi teknologi untuk merancang materi serta kuis pembelajaran. Setelah mengikuti kegiatan ini diharapkan masyarakat sasaran mampu merancang pembelajaran yang menarik, interaktif, dan komprehensif sehingga memberikan pengalaman belajar yang menyenangkan (joyful) bagi peserta didik.

Abstract

Everything Here is beautiful is a novel by Mira T. Lee, which potrays Lucia, a Chinese – American who struggles with schizophrenia. Through this novel, Mira T. Lee vividly potray the immense struggle of living with schizophrenia and the challenges of leading an everyday life. Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder that requires the family's role in providing support and treatment. By using Sigmund Freud's theory of the unconscious mind, this study aims to emphasize the crucial role of family dynamics in shaping the condition of individuals with schizophrenia. The article employs a qualitative approach to conduct an in-depth analysis of the dynamics of the id, Ego, and Superego in order to reveal the relapse of the schizophrenia condition experienced by Lucia. The findings show that dysfunctional family dynamics can trigger an identity crisis, which in turn exacerbates schizophrenia symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, abnormal behavior, disorganized thinking, and emotional disturbances. The study provides a novel perspective on familial impact through literary character analysis.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), holds great potential to enhance the quality of education. SMPN 3 Semarang initiated an AI training program for teachers to strengthen their pedagogical competence. The development of AI in education presents opportunities to enhance teacher competence through technology-based training.This community service activity uses a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data is collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires given to training participants. The results of the activity demonstrate that this training offers a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts of AI, its applications in education, and practical skills in utilizing various AI tools and platforms. Additionally, several challenges were identified during the implementation of AI, including limitations in technological infrastructure and teachers' resistance to change.Nevertheless, this training successfully improved teachers' pedagogical competence and made a positive contribution to the quality of learning in schools. This community service activity also made the training in the use of artificial intelligence at SMPN 3 Semarang a model and reference for other schools in improving the quality of learning in this digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how sarcasm is translated in the Indonesian subtitles of the film Mean Girls (2004), focusing on the official version available on HBO. Sarcasm, as a form of expression that relies heavily on context, tone, and cultural understanding, presents particular challenges in the translation process. Specifically, this research seeks to identify the various types of sarcasm appearing in the film and to evaluate the translation methods used to represent these sarcastic expressions in the target language. The method employed is a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected by identifying and categorizing sarcastic utterances within the film. Subsequently, the data were analyzed using the translation techniques framework by (Nuriah & Khoirunnisa, 2024) to classify the applied translation methods. The analysis involved an in-depth examination of the utterances’ contexts and a comparison between the source text and its translation. The findings reveal that literal translation is the most frequently used technique, accounting for 56.8%, followed by reduction (16.2%), generalization (8.1%), and discursive creation (8.1%). Other techniques such as modulation, amplification, equivalence, and borrowing were each applied 2.7% of the time to address specific challenges like ambiguity and idiomatic expressions. While literal translation tends to maintain formal equivalence between the source text and the translation, it often fails to fully convey the sarcastic meaning, resulting in a loss of nuance and humor. Conversely, more creative and context-sensitive techniques, although used less frequently, prove to be more effective in preserving the pragmatic force of sarcasm. This study concludes that successful sarcasm translation largely depends on the translator’s creativity and awareness of linguistic and cultural differences.

Abstract

This study analyzes the phenomenon of social displacement occurs in society in the global era as reflected in Baek Se-Hee's memoir "I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki." The narrative describes how the main character responds to the people and environment around her reflecting social displacement. By using the theories of social displacement and the global era, this study presents the forms of the social displacement phenomenon and how society in the global era influences the social displacement phenomenon. This study is presented using a qualitative descriptive method, describing the results of the analysis by collecting data in the form of text. The results of the analysis prove that the forms of social displacement are feelings of alienation, not being recognized, and loss of identity. The impact on individuals who experience social displacement is difficulty adapting and finding social support. The global era influences the phenomenon of social displacement through industrialization and digitalization as depicted in the novel.

Abstract

This study discusses the translation analysis of exclamatory sentences said by the main character, Belly Conklin, in the novel We'll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han from English to Indonesian. This study aims to analyze and identify the expressions of emotion in exclamatory sentences based on Charles Darwin's theory (1872) of expressions of emotion and to analyze the cultural meaning and pragmatic meaning in the translation of exclamatory sentences based on Yule's theory (1996) of pragmatics. This study uses qualitative methods. The findings show that most of the exclamatory sentences said by the main character express the emotion of joy (54.55%), followed by anger (36.36%) and sadness (9.09%), with no emotion of fear or disgust found. In addition, most of the exclamatory sentences contain both cultural meaning and pragmatic meaning (54.55%), while the rest only contain pragmatic meaning (45.45%), and no sentences containing only cultural meaning were found. The implication of this study emphasizes the importance of understanding the context of the story, culture, and pragmatic aspects in the translation process, especially in literary works. Expressions of emotion can change in intensity in translation, and failure to understand the context can lead to errors in capturing the characters' intentions. Therefore, a thorough understanding of cultural context and pragmatics is necessary to produce accurate and meaningful translation. This study is also relevant in the translation of movie dialogues and other literary texts.

Abstract

The findings reveal that most exclamations express joy, followed by anger and sadness, with many containing both cultural and pragmatic meanings. The study underscores the importance of contextual and cultural awareness in translation to accurately convey emotional and social nuances, providing valuable insights for translators and scholars in intercultural literary translation.

Abstract

This study investigates the perception of adversity and life uncertainty composed through the virtuous ethics of Stoicism in manifesting resilience embodied by Andy Dufresne, the protagonist in Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (1982). Drawing on Waitzman’s (2024) framework of Stoic resilience, the analysis investigates how Andy navigates systemic oppression and adversity by grounding his actions in Stoic principles. The study aims to demonstrate how resilience emerges as the culmination of applied Stoic reasoning, wherein individuals reclaim agency through self-mastery and moral integrity. Methodologically, the study employs a close-reading analysis of the novel, supported by library research, to dissect Andy’s psychological and ethical strategies by integrating Stoic virtues: wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. Additionally, with psychological constructs such as self-reliance, self-stability, and self-appropriateness, this article illuminates how resilience is actively forged through adversity rather than passive endurance. The findings demonstrate that Stoic resilience extends beyond basic survival as an intentional process guided by virtue, where adversity becomes a catalyst for autonomy and liberation. By combining literary analysis with moral philosophy and psychology, the interdisciplinary approach frames resilience as both a philosophical ideal and a practical tool for confronting life trials. This work contributes to broader discourses on resilience theory, advocating for future research to operationalize Stoic principles in real-world contexts, empowering individuals to harness adversity as a means of ethical and psychological growth.

Abstract

The Alchemist by Coelho is a philosophical novel about the journey of a young shepherd named Santiago, who finds a treasure that is hidden near the Egyptian pyramids. The story is rich in metaphor, which makes it an ideal topic for translation studies that focus on cultural nuances and emotional depth. This study aims to examine how Larson’s translation strategies are able to translate significant metaphors while retaining the philosophical and emotional complexity. The data in this study are seven key metaphors that convey the concept of personal destiny, spiritual interconnectedness, personal desire, nature signs, gendered image, and peacefulness. This study uses a qualitative method. By applying the analysis of metaphor translation by Larson, the results indicate that effective translation techniques used by the translator, Lesmana (2005), such as generalisation, omission, amplification, adaptation, and literal translation, not only retain the original meaning of the metaphor but also modify them to align with Indonesian culture. This work provides an understanding of the challenges of translating metaphors, which contributes to broadening the discussion regarding how to convey information effectively across cultures in literary contexts.
