Abstract

This integrative evidence review examines talent mobility and succession planning in family-owned organizations by asking how talent mobility is connected to succession planning and which conditions determine whether that connection becomes operationally meaningful. The article synthesizes peer-reviewed and institutional literature relevant to people, leadership, work-design, and organizational change systems, emphasizing mechanisms, boundary conditions, and measurement choices rather than a universal average effect. Evidence associated with Edmondson et al., 2014 and Marler et al., 2017 is read with the wider source set to distinguish formal adoption from effective use, short-term response from durable capability, and observed association from causal interpretation. The synthesis identifies complementary roles for talent mobility and succession routines, change fatigue, and governance or coordination routines. No survey, interview, experiment, proprietary dataset, or regression estimate is represented as having been collected for this conceptual review.

Abstract

Background: Sustainability claims create value only when they correspond to verifiable operating practices and a customer proposition that small enterprises can deliver consistently. Aim: This topic-specific assessment explains how the relationship between the focal practices and competitive advantage operates in small enterprises integrating environmental and social considerations into products, communication, channels, and customer relationships. Method: A conceptual narrative synthesis draws on selected scholarly and institutional publications. The discussion is organized around mechanisms, boundary conditions, and practical implications. Results: The synthesis identifies six linked mechanisms: credible sustainability claims, resource-efficient value propositions, customer participation, local stakeholder relationships, cost and differentiation effects, learning and reputation accumulation. The analysis indicates that outcomes depend less on nominal adoption than on execution quality, governance, learning, and fit with local capacity. Conclusion: Decision makers should define the expected outcome, assign responsibility, establish a small set of auditable indicators, and revise the intervention when documented findings contradicts its assumptions. Contribution: The synthesis provides a conditional framework without claiming primary data that were not collected.
