Abstract

The productivity and quality enhancement of tropical pastures in Indonesia faces critical constraints from soil degradation and low forage nutritional value. This study evaluates the potential of legume cover crop integration to simultaneously improve grass biomass, forage quality, and soil physicochemical properties. Through comprehensive analysis of 42 peer-reviewed articles from Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, we demonstrate the multifunctional benefits of legume-grass systems across Indonesia's diverse agroecosystems. Research findings reveal consistent improvements in both productivity and soil health parameters. Legume integration enhances biomass production by 30-65% and elevates crude protein content by 40-50% compared to conventional grass monocultures. Particularly effective species such as Leucaena leucocephala and Centrosema pubescens contribute to measurable soil quality enhancements, including increased organic matter content (0.5-1.5%), improved cation exchange capacity (2-5 cmol(+)/kg), and superior water retention capacity (15-20% improvement), while concurrently reducing soil erosion rates. Despite these demonstrated benefits, practical implementation faces several challenges. Rhizobia inoculation requirements present technical barriers for some farming communities, while species-specific soil adaptation needs necessitate careful selection of appropriate legume varieties. Economic constraints further complicate adoption among smallholder farmers, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study underscores legume integration as a sustainable intensification strategy for tropical pasture systems. The findings hold significant implications for developing sustainable livestock policies in Indonesia, offering pathways to reduce chemical fertilizer dependence while simultaneously addressing food security concerns and improving smallholder livelihoods. The dual benefits of productivity enhancement and environmental conservation position legume-based systems as a climate-smart agricultural approach for Indonesia's pasturelands.

Abstract

Red algae Eucheuma cottonii is one of the potential marine biodiversity that provides added value in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields and is known to have antibacterial compounds. Research focusing on the potential of E. cottonii as an antibacterial is still limited, particularly when it comes to the Aru Islands. This study aimed to measure the antibacterial activity of E. cottonii against pathogenic bacteria including E. coli and S. aereus at several concentrations and to determine the best concentration for inhibiting these two pathogenic bacteria. The study was true experimental laboratory research with a post-test-only controlled group design. Antibacterial tests using the disc diffusion method and phytochemical tests were carried out. This study revealed that E. cottonii could be able to inhibit S. aureus ranging from 0.27±0.03 – 2.1±0.14 at a concentration of 50%-100%, and 0.17±0.05 – 0.45 ± 0.03 against E. coli at a concentration of 80-100%. Meanwhile, saponins and flavonoids were two bioactive compounds found through phytochemical testing. The study concluded that the n-hexane extract of E. cottonii was able to inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus, even with a weak inhibition category. This study recommends that improvements are needed in the E. cottonii extraction process to maximize the antibacterial properties of E. cottonii.

Abstract

Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in nutrient cycling and soil fertility, particularly through their ability to solubilize insoluble phosphate compounds. This study aims to isolate and characterize phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) on land managed under the dusung agroforestry system. Soil samples were collected from five types of land use: forests, mixed orchards, clove hamlets, nutmeg orchards, and shrubs. PSB isolation was performed using Pikovskaya medium with the spread plate method, followed by characterization of colony morphology (shape, edge, color, elevation) and Gram staining. The results showed that the highest PSB population occurred in forest land (8.3 × 10? CFU/ml), followed by mixed orchards (6.2–6.7 × 10? CFU/ml), clove orchards (5.3–5.4 × 10? CFU/ml), nutmeg orchards (3.2–5.6 × 10? CFU/ml), and the lowest in shrubs (7.1 × 10³ CFU/ml). The characteristics of PSB varied, with isolates from forests and nutmeg orchards predominantly consisting of coccus-shaped Gram-positive bacteria, while those from mixed and clove orchards were dominated by bacillus-shaped Gram-positive bacteria. The population and diversity of PSBs were influenced by the availability of organic matter, soil pH, and land management practices. These findings highlight the ecological importance of the dusung system in sustaining soil fertility and promoting ecosystem resilience.
