Abstract

Abstract In this article, the author discusses the issue of environmental security, which is part of human security. Environmental security is a non-traditional security issue that aims to protect land, water, air, etc. The author limits the case to the issue of forest conversion, often referred to as deforestation, into oil palm land in Indonesia. As we know, environmental problems are still one of the issues that get a lot of attention because the environment that should be able to be used properly is actually damaged or damaged, reducing or even losing the function of the environment itself. Therefore, this article discusses forest conversion that occurs in Indonesia from an environmental security perspective. The results in this article show that there are still people who are affected by the conversion of forests to oil palm land in Indonesia. Keywords: Deforestation, Environmental security, Human Security, Palm oil land.

Abstract

This research analyzes the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in South Korea’s foreign policy and its impact on relations with China. The study examines why South Korea took a compromising approach through the Three No’s Policy despite implementing the THAAD system as a deterrence against North Korea. Through James Rosenau’s Foreign Policy Theory with five factors (systemic, societal, governmental, idiosyncratic, and role sources), this research fills a gap in literature on decision-making dynamics in East Asian security dilemmas. The study employs qualitative methods with case study analysis, relying on primary and secondary sources including policy documents, official government statements, and bilateral economic data. Results indicate that economic dependence on China and domestic pressure became dominant factors in South Korea’s compromising decision, outweighing considerations of alliance with the United States. These findings imply that in an era of economic interdependence, even countries facing direct security threats may be forced to balance security interests with economic concerns.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of the West Java Provincial Government in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as a form of inclusiveness of actors within the framework promoted by this agenda. The issue raised in this study is how subnational actors, particularly provincial governments, can contribute to bridging global interests with local needs, as well as how their institutional capacity influences this process. To answer this question, the study uses a global governance framework to analyse the dynamics of subnational actors' involvement in SDG implementation, examining it through a governance activity matrix. Methodologically, this study employs a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis, drawing on literature studies and reviews of policy documents related to the implementation of the SDGs in West Java. The findings show that through the global governance perspective, subnational actors possess the capacity to actively participate and make significant contributions to achieving the SDGs through policy integration that reflects both global and national sustainability interests, while also being relevant to the local context. However, the dispersed nature of the relationship between levels has created several gaps, particularly in certain SDG goals, reflecting the complexity of coordination and the challenges in implementation.
