Abstract

Marine ecosystem sustainability in coastal regions is increasingly challenged by climate change, overexploitation of marine resources, pollution, and weak community-based conservation, particularly in Muslim-majority societies where spiritual values shape everyday behavior but remain underrepresented in empirical sustainability studies. This study aims to examine the mediating role of maḥabbah (spiritual love and compassion in Islamic ethics) in the relationship between environmental ethics, marine resource utilization, marine protection, and marine ecosystem sustainability. Grounded in Islamic Environmental Ethics and Compassionate Conservation Theory, the research employs a quantitative explanatory design using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Data were collected from 150 Muslim millennial fishers in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, through stratified random sampling. The findings reveal that maḥabbah has a strong and significant direct effect on marine ecosystem sustainability and significantly mediates the effects of environmental ethics, sustainable marine resource utilization, and marine protection practices. These results indicate that internalized spiritual–ethical values play a crucial role in transforming ethical awareness and conservation practices into sustained pro-environmental behavior. The study contributes theoretically by empirically positioning maḥabbah as a mediating construct within sustainability models and practically by offering a value-based framework for strengthening community-driven marine conservation policies in Muslim coastal contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the mediating effect of ḥilm on marine resource-based social entrepreneurship among fisher communities by integrating Resilience Theory, Stakeholder Theory, and the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework. A quantitative approach was employed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS), with data collected from 240 fishermen in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, through a structured questionnaire. The findings reveal that community engagement significantly influences product innovation, which in turn strengthens the coastal economy. A robust coastal economy not only directly enhances social entrepreneurship but also positively affects government support and the internalization of ḥilm. Furthermore, ḥilm, the coastal economy, and government support are found to play significant mediating roles in the structural model. The results indicate that social entrepreneurship is shaped through an integrated process involving social participation, economic development, institutional support, and ethical values. Theoretically, this study contributes by incorporating ḥilm as an ethical mediating construct, offering a more holistic understanding of sustainable entrepreneurship in coastal contexts. Practically, the findings provide insights for policymakers to strengthen community participation, promote innovation, and enhance local economic capacity in line with social welfare and sustainability.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to contribute to the literature by focusing on the relationship between religious commitment and halal cosmetics consumption and identifying the mediating effect of middle-class Muslim females’ trust on halal cosmetics consumption. We used structural modeling (Lisrel) in investigating these relationship and applied non-probability convenience sampling to administer questionnaires among 450 middle-class Muslim female respondents currently living in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The results showed that the direct effect of religious commitment, ability, benevolence, and integrity on trust showed T-Values of 1.71, 2.61, -1.92. These indicate that only ability has a significant and positive effect on trust, but the direct effect of trust, religious commitment, ability, benevolence, and integrity on halal cosmetics consumption showed T-Values of 4.11, 1.71, 2.60, -2.12. These indicate that only trust and ability have significant and positive effects on halal cosmetics consumption. Meanwhile the mediating role of trust showed T-Values of 1.41, 2.79, -2.12, and 1.86. These indicate that trust was significantly and positively found in mediating the relationship between ability and halal cosmetics consumption, but in the relationship between benevolence and halal cosmetics consumption, it was also significantly found but negatively.
