Abstract

The concept of gender equality and disability long been advocated, emphasizing equal rights and equality between human beings. However, in reality, gender, disability and poverty persists as intersecting factors that contribute to discrimination against the deaf. There are stigmatising assumptions that encourage unequal treatment of the deaf. This study aims to analyse the interrelated experiences of the deaf based on gender, poverty and employment opportunities in East Java. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews with 29 informants, documentation and focus group discussions (FGDs). The data were analysed using the NVivo 12 software, following a series of steps: data input, coding, exploration, visualization, and presentation. The results of the study challenge the gender disability theory which suggests that women with disabilities tend to be poorer than men with disabilities. Instead, this study found that both men and women with disabilities face similar levels of poverty and encounter difficulties in accessing labour market. Some of them are poor from birth, making it difficult to get education costs and making it difficult to find work. There are also those who have difficulty getting work because they are deaf, so they lack income to meet their needs. In addition, the result supports the existence of disability-poverty cycle among the deaf. Poverty for the deaf is exacerbated by their disability, lack of health insurance, limited access to education and skills training, and difficulties in penetrating the labour market.

Abstract

Abstract

The presence of female pembarong (performers) in Java is interesting as a form of defying gender stereotypes. The female performers portray those who try to fight stereotypes and gender norms in a patriarchal society. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to 1) explain the stereotypical experience of reyog Ponorogo female performers from the perspective of Javanese culture, 2) explain the experience of cultural tenacity of reyog Ponorogo female performers from the perspective of Javanese culture. The research was conducted in two places in Ponorogo. Sawoo Village in Sawoo Subdistrict, Ponorogo Regency which is the location of the Sardulo Nareswari reyog community and Plunturan Village in Pulung Subdistrict, Ponorogo Regency which is the location of the Putri Onggopati reyog community. This research uses a qualitative method. Data collection techniques used included interviews with female performers, observation of videos of female performers' performances from YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, interview transcripts, triangulation of sources, and data visualization. Furthermore, the data was analyzed using an interactive model: data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusions drawing. The labeling of the research results shows that: 1) Stereotypical views towards female performers have begun to diminish. Society began to accept their existence in reyog performance art. 2) The loosening of cultural constraints within Javanese tradition, with positive conditions that do not put aside their role as women, wives, and homemakers. These conditions provide freedom and creative opportunities for female performers.

Abstract

Reog art has become the identity of the Ponorogo district. Paguyuban Singo Mudo in Sidoharjo village, Ponorogo regency, is the only one that preserves the unique local wisdom of reog, namely reog dadak lar pitik. This reog was made because the community in Sidoharjo had difficulty getting peacock feathers and tiger skin as basic reog ingredients, so they were replaced with dadak lar pitik and civet skin. Then reog dadak lar pitik is believed to be a tradition to bring rain. This research aims to analyze the values of religious moderation in the local wisdom of reog dadak lar pitik. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. The data collection tools were observation sheets, interview sheets, documentation, and Forum Group Discussion (FGD). The findings are first, preserving local culture can be seen in people who still uphold the reog dadak lar pitik performance as a means of bringing rain. Second, tolerance is seen in people who still respect the opinion of the belief that this reog can bring rain, even though many people no longer believe it. The third is the absence of conflict of belief, whether those who believe in the myth of reog dadak lar pitik can bring rain, because this reog was used as a means of da'wah. Fourth, patriotism is depicted in the characters of the reog actors who have a patriotic spirit. Kesenian reog menjadi identitas kabupaten Ponorogo.
