Abstract

Civil Society is considered as the third space outside the state and market where people can express their opinions and make certain contributions to create a condition in accordance with the certain values they profess. As the time progresses, with the development of information and globalization, the demand for bigger civic space is undeniable and the need for society to be able to contribute to an issue that occurs outside the border of their country is arising. This encourages the role of civil society to contribute to humanitarian diplomacy efforts where the role of the community and non-state actors is needed in solving transnational problems. This issue is exemplified by the role of various religious organizations in Indonesia through their contribution in helping to solve humanitarian problems in Rakhine State, of Myanmar between 2012 to 2018. Through a humanitarian diplomacy approach, these various religious organizations collaborated with the Indonesian government to send various types of assistance. This paper will explain why the role of religious organizations in Indonesia as the representation of civil society is significant in the humanitarian diplomacy effort of the Rakhine State Crisis. This paper will also provide a descriptive narrative related to how these contributions are channelled and delivered to the conflict-affected communities in Myanmar.

Abstract

Indonesia officially received the mandate as Chair of ASEAN from January 1 to December 31, 2023.  During the post-COVID-19 pandemic, in the period 2022-2023 Indonesia received appreciation from the  international community regarding the successful organization of international forums including the G-20.  Indonesia's attitude is considered to remain neutral and maximize Indonesia's function as a middle-power at the  level of multilateralism, amid geopolitical conflicts such as the Ukraine-Russia conflict and regional instability in  the Middle East. But on the other hand, there are other issues in the realm of low politics, including the issue of  climate change and women's vulnerability. As a region with a long coastline, it has a high potential risk as a chain  effect of climate change. In addition, the gender disparity that is still quite high in this region is one of the factors  that make women vulnerable to climate change issues, such as vulnerability in the labor, health and gender-based  violence sectors. This paper focuses on seeing the extent to which Indonesia's role as chair of ASEAN in 2023  advocates the issue of climate change in a gender framework. The concept of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion  (GESI) which focuses on women's participation in the public sector and policy initiation is used as a framework.  The expected results of this study can show the relationship between environmental issues and women's  vulnerability and the imbalance between women's participation in the public sector and policy initiation.  Keywords: GESI, women, climate change, ASEAN Chairmanship, Indonesia.

Abstract

A prevalent narrative posits that the rights of indigenous peoples are often jeopardized by state interests due to an imbalance of power. The protection of local knowledge and customary law is closely linked with the need to address external threats. The Negeri Haruku indigenous peoples, sensitive to global environmental concerns, particularly climate change, recognize the importance of harmonizing human-nature relations through traditional practices passed down through generations. This article explores how the indigenous people of Negeri Haruku contribute to environmental conservation through their indigenous knowledge and how efforts to preserve this knowledge via the establishment of Sekolah Adat Kewang enhance human security. Data was collected from both primary and secondary sources, including interviews, journal articles, books, reports, and websites. Using the concepts of indigenous knowledge and human security, this article demonstrates that the local knowledge of the Negeri Haruku indigenous people has been preserved for future generations through Sekolah Adat Kewang. This institution not only preserves ancestral values but also serves as an educational platform to ensure the environmental security of the Negeri Haruku community. The concept of environmental security is implemented through customary environmental protection measures based on the principles of Sasi (customary law). These measures encompass various types of Sasi, including Sea Sasi, Forest Sasi, River Sasi, and Inland Sasi.

Abstract

The emergence of culture currently being acknowledged in political science. It has played an important role in policy making to the development of a region or country.  This paper will focus on how far culture, especially local values, has been interpreted in the decision-making process of foreign policy. Culture and its values and interpretation exists in formal organizations whose members develop a form of shared belief, shared values, and shared knowledge to interpret the reality. Indonesia is famous for its identity to remain neutral as one of the nation's foreign policy blueprint. The long-standing foreign policy of mendayung antara dua karang is challenged several times, especially during the shift of the unipolar through multipolar system in world order. This research will highlight the role of culture in foreign policy by interpreting local values, especially Javanese values conducted by President Joko Widodo’s cabinet in foreign policy approaches related to G20 chairmanship by Indonesia. By using constructivism approach in foreign policy and non-western approach in international relations, this research found that under President Jokowi’s administration there are attempts to re-interpreting Javanese values such as rukun, which emphasize on harmonious values in conducting foreign policy.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed human communication patterns by encouraging more intense digital interactions. The push for access to the internet is also getting higher to complement the limitations of the offline space of various social and economic activities, which are transformed into digital space. Even though we have entered the post-pandemic era, internet users continue to increase. Moreover, as one of the most dynamic regions and high internet penetration Southeast Asian nations are prone to online gender-based violence. This research focuses on how far ASEAN as a regional organization addressing online gender-based violence. The gender approach and cyber security are used as a conceptual framework to describe the role and challenges of ASEAN in eradicating OGBV during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The research results highlighted how far COVID-19 shapes people's interactions and eventually creates insecurities in the cyber arena. Gender approach contextualized gender bias and imbalance of power relations in a patriarchal society as cyber security is highly labeled as masculine. Thus, a collaboration between state, intergovernmental organizations, and domestic stakeholders is necessary in order to eradicate OGBV, promoting gender equality in ASEAN legal framework in order to establish a safer virtual space for Southeast Asian society.

Abstract

Vast consumerism especially in the fast fashion industry has been criticised by environmentalists since it increased disposable fashion culture. Social media platforms, websites and apps have become key instruments for communities and organisations to spread awareness and drive transformation in the fashion industry. Meanwhile, due to COVID-19 pandemics, many social welfare institutions suffered from decreased funds and affected protection towards people with low income and specified socio-economic conditions at PPS PGOT Mardi Utomo in Semarang. Leveraging digital media for green campaigns can significantly enhance environmental awareness and sustainable practices among the community. By reopening sewing class and increasing added values in upcycling fashion products with simple stitching models. As supply and demand increased, the upcycling fashion activities needed specific strategies  in ensuring sustainable raw  materials from clothing donation. The utilisation of social media increases people's awareness in eco-friendly campaigns. Wider digital campaign coverage can increase public understanding and participation in donating or purchasing products. The growth of donations through momentum such as Green Ramadan and the introduction of digital campaigns can increase the motivation and entrepreneurial skills of the beneficiaries.

Abstract

Technology competition between the United States and China started to growth significantly at the international level. The United States has implemented highly restrictive policies toward Chinese technology accomplishments. In retaliation, China has responded to US sanctions and limited its access to advanced semiconductors by emphasizing independence and making investments in its own semiconductor manufacturing sector. With both countries imposing tariffs and restrictions on technology companies, the dispute has escalated into a full-fledged technology war. A series of policies have pushed the two countries further apart and towards a technology war. By using power analysis as the main conceptual framework, this research focuses on examining why technology is a fundamental aspect of the US-China great power rivalry. As a concept of power growth, technology accomplishment should not only be positioned as a medium to increase economic interests but also a tool to improve military capabilities and national security. The shifting from technological competition to technological supremacy for the purpose of political domination and influence is inevitable. Thus, technological war and power struggle also have the potential consequences of prolonged conflict and could transform the global economic and political landscape.
