Abstract

Comprehending the impact of gender on code-switching behaviors in student presentations is essential for educators to create effective communication tactics and inclusive teaching techniques. The objective of this study is to examine the occurrence and patterns of code-switching in student presentations, with a particular emphasis on gender disparities. The study aims to investigate the differences between male and female students in their utilization of intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag-switching techniques during presentations. This study utilized a qualitative methodology. The researchers examined 12 presentations and identified occurrences of code-switching according to Poplack's (1980) theory. The results indicated notable disparities between genders in code-switching tendencies. Female students exhibited a greater occurrence of intra-sentential switching, with a frequency of 73%, in contrast to male students, who had a frequency of 27%. Inter-sentential switching is the most frequently utilized sort of code-switching, while Tag-switching is the least commonly employed by students. The study's findings indicate that female students have a higher tendency to code-switch during presentations, namely in the forms of intra-sentential and inter-sentential code-switching. These observations emphasize the importance for educators to take into account gender dynamics when creating teaching practices that employ code-switching as a means of efficient communication.

Abstract

This thesis aims to describe the rhetorical style of discussion section in 30 research articles (RAs) in six different fields of study, which those were written by Indonesian authors and successfully published in highly reputable journals. The fields comprised social sciences, language, engineering, physics, chemistry, and computer science. The research was designed as a mixed study, both quantitative and qualitative, as well as content analysis. One of the used instruments was a table containing eight textual moves model in the discussion sessions found by Swales. However, analysis focus was limited to Move 1 to Move 6. Data formed numbers and percentages indicating the amount of stages involved in all of the chosen RAs. Data were also in the form of extracts (authors’ arguments) which showed the moves applied in their articles. The results exhibited that there was a varied use of rhetorical style on each RAs, but Move 5 was used in all selected RAs (100%) which proved that the discussion section required a profound elaboration of the obtained research results. Besides, there were 27 RAs (90%) involved Move 3 as the second most used move which contained arguments about the research results. The writing patterns were also considered varied. The RAs of language and social sciences owned tendency to address more moves, while physics, chemistry, engineering, and computer science even just applied 2 moves. In accordance with the results, the use of moves highly depended on certain study fields and features of used data. Different disciplines tended had dissimilar rhetorical structures. The findings proved that the rhetorical style in the content of articles published in high-reputation journals were diverse, so as producing acceptable RAs for being published in high-reputation journals does not necessitate to involve all moves. Nevertheless, Move 5 must be presented in each of RAs to explain the results of research. Key Words: Eight Textual Moves, Research Article, Rhetorical Style

Abstract

Abstract: Semantic mapping has been demonstrated as practical teaching and learning technique for students at all grade levels. However, its use for speaking class has been relatively unexplored. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of semantic mapping as a technique to improve students’ speaking ability. The research design of this study was quasi experimental design. The population comprised the seventh grade students of SMP Taba Renah, Musi Rawas in the academic year of 2015/2016 and the sample consisted of 44 students. The data were collected via test, observation and interview. In analyzing the data, for the pre-test it was found that there were not significant differences in speaking competence and its components in experimental and control class because P > 0.05. For the post-test, it was found that for total speaking competence P-value is 0.018, for vocabulary in speaking P-value is 0.001, for fluency in speaking P-value is 0.033, for pronunciation in speaking P-value is 0.060, and for grammar in speaking P-value is 0.348. So, there were significant differences in experimental & control class in vocabulary and fluency aspects because P < 0.05 but there were not significant difference in pronunciation and grammar aspects because P > 0.05. The finding shows that semantic mapping as technique is effective to be implemented in teaching English to improve students’ speaking ability, especially in vocabulary and fluency aspects but it is not in pronunciation and grammar

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of Themed English Teaching Materials, specifically integrating Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) within a TAGANA (short for Taruna Siaga Bencana, or Disaster Preparedness and Response Volunteer Team) theme to bolster junior high school students motivation and proficiency in English. Addressing the need for innovative educational methods in English teaching, this research fills an existing gap by developing and assessing TAGANA-themed materials that incorporate a HOTS-PBL approach. The study carefully selected 24 English teachers from Bengkulu, Indonesia, using purposive sampling to ensure diverse representation in qualifications, experience, and teaching methods. This study evaluates the materials content validity and instructional efficacy using the five-stage ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. The results show that incorporating HOTS and PBL into thematic teaching materials greatly enhances students English proficiency and motivation, especially with themes like TAGANA. Expert validation affirmed the strong content validity of the materials, and data from both the experimental and control groups demonstrated significant improvements in learning outcomes. The integration of HOTS and PBL into thematic teaching materials provides valuable insights into global educational practises. By fostering students higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills and incorporating the theme of TAGANA, this approach offers a progressive methodology for English education. This model makes significant contributions to educational practises globally.

Abstract

Criticizing others research in discussion section of research article is important to show the writers confidence in presenting the result of their research. However, it has not really noted by Indonesian writers. This recent research is aimed at finding the use of ACUs as the strategies to refer to others result in discussion section of research articles write in Bahasa Indonesia and in English by international writers in the field of linguistics and literature. 40 RADs were analysed to find out the ACUs used in RADs and the linguistics features of each units. The analysis is based on the Academics Conflict Units framework proposed by Sadeghie and Alinasab : 2020. The result revealed that the ACUs used in the RADs is different in number between the same field of study in different language used. In linguistics study the occurrences is quite similar in number but different in the type of ACUs used. Interestingly in literature study, Indonesian writers used more ACUs than international writers but both Indonesian and International writers only used Proposing Claims as the strategy to present their findings. It might due the different research area and topic of each research. These findings offer theoretical and pedagogical insight into the academic writing (especially research articles writing) instruction for Indonesian. Since the corpus of the data were only 40 RADs, further research with larger corpus of the data will be beneficial to get general pattern of ACUs used in RADs.

Abstract

Method section of research articles defined as a crucial part among several sections. This study employed an analytical framework of method sections by adopting from Zhang and Wannaruk (2016) adjusting from Pho's (2008a). There were 15 research articles published in International Journal and 15 others published in Cambodian National Journal selected as the sample for the study. Three vital research questions were established to investigate this analysis comprising (1) to find out on moves structure in Method sections of RAs written by Cambodian authors published in national journal; (2) the same moves structure in Method section of RAs published in international journals; and (3) the differences of both move structure in Method sections of RAs in national and international journals. Three moves in method section were used in the study such as: Move1 on Describing Research Design; Move2 on Describing Data Collection procedures; and Move3 on Describing Data Analysis. The results stated that all these three moves were found as conventional moves in International Journal while optional moves were found in National Journal. Almost the same results on steps in move2 from the analysis except step2 which was found as obligatory in the International Journal. One step in move3 and five steps in move2 were found as the same status. There were only three optional steps found in International while there were five steps and three moves were found as optional steps and moves. This analysis suggested that Cambodian National Journal should provide clear distinction in writing method sections by introducing specific model of moves and steps to write a qualify method for a research. Future researcher should study rhetorical analysis of move structure in method section in the same filed but the samples should be selected from new published research articles and increased the number of research articles for the analysis.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines students' views on the use of Basic Reading Comprehension materials developed with the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and a multicultural-based approach. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in the integration of PBL with a multicultural approach to improve students' reading comprehension, motivation, and learning engagement in a diverse educational environment. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach involving 300 Indonesian students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires, then analyzed thematically to produce the effectiveness of this approach. Results: Students felt more motivated and active in discussions when the material combined problem-solving tasks and culturally relevant content. PBL improved the ability to understand texts through critical thinking and collaboration, while the multicultural approach helped students integrate the material with their cultural background, thus encouraging inclusivity and awareness of diversity. Challenges found include the need for more assistance for students who are not familiar with PBL. Conclusion: The integration of PBL with multicultural-based materials can significantly improve reading learning by making it more interactive, inclusive, and meaningful. It is recommended to provide additional support for diverse learners and develop more culturally responsive teaching materials.

Abstract

Studies on research gap presentation only focused on certain field of studies, whereas there are no studies that try to compare different field of studies. Therefore, this research aims to fill the gap and investigate how authors from different field of studies present research gap in their research articles. As the research gap presentation are mainly occurred in the beginning sections of an article, 100 article introductions from 10 journals have been analyzed. The journals were divided into two major fields which are Hard Science and Soft Science. Analysis was done to find out what types of research gap strategies that is used by the authors following the seven research gaps framework: evidence gap, knowledge gap, practical-knowledge gap, methodological gap, empirical gap, theoretical gap, and population gap. The results show that authors from both Hard Sciences and Soft Science used knowledge gap as the most frequently used strategy and theoretical gap as the least frequently used strategy. Other result is authors in Hard Sciences use more varied strategies than in Soft Science. Furthermore, both fields seem quite similar regarding the occurrence of research gaps while still has differences in some parts.
