Abstract

Microteaching for pre-service teacher’s instruction has traditionally been face-to-face as these teachers are prepared to teach in secondary schools. However, these pre-service teachers were also aware of the requirement for teaching synchronously via online platforms if face-to-face classes were not possible for example like in time COVID-19. The objective of this study is to investigate pre-service teacher’s or students' perspectives of utilizing the Zoom meeting application for online microteaching classes from pedagogical, socio-cultural, and technical perspectives. This study's population comprised of twenty (20) students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education who had enrolled in microteaching lessons and were, of course, permitted to express their thoughts and opinions. It can be stated that students have a favorable opinion of the Zoom meeting application for online microteaching classes. The study's findings indicate a beneficial outcome in the delivery of microteaching lectures online. Even though the courses are delivered online, they follow the usual format. Students appear to prefer the Zoom Meeting application as a learning medium for interactive learning applications because, in addition toward being practical and straightforward, zoom meetings rarely bring difficult-to-manage problems.

Abstract

A number of studies on the cultural content represented in local or global textbooks have increasingly been investigated. However, it is scanty research comparing local and global textbooks. This study aims to examine two textbooks determined by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, a global textbook entitled English in Mindfor schools implementing a new curriculum calledMerdekacurriculum and a local textbook,When English Rings a Bell, for schools that have not applied it. The study employed content analysis as a research design. The results show that the global textbook provides more on target culture, but the local textbook highly emphasizes source culture and neglects international cultures. In addition, the global textbook concerns social and environmental themes, while the local textbook focuses more on religion/humanities/art and personal theme. Further, the global textbook does not accommodate adequate intercultural communicative competence, which was absent in the local textbook. The imbalanced cultural representations in those textbooks affect students intercultural competence. The study suggests the practical implications of providing students with sufficient references to the target, source, and international cultures to promote their intercultural competence.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of digital communication in academic settings, specifically focusing on WhatsApp group chats among English Education students at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (Unihaz), HIMABI 2024. The research analyzes the patterns of language use in chat messages, exploring the prevalence of informal language features such as abbreviations, emojis, and code-switching between Indonesian and English. The study also examines student perceptions regarding the impact of these language features on communication efficiency, clarity, and the overall academic atmosphere. The results reveal that informal language enhances engagement, fosters a supportive learning environment, and mitigates barriers to communication. However, the overuse of informal elements such as abbreviations and emojis can sometimes cause misunderstandings, particularly for students unfamiliar with these conventions. The study highlights the need for a balance between informality and academic rigor in digital communication. It concludes that while informal language serves an important role in student collaboration, educators should guide students in maintaining clarity and inclusivity in academic contexts

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the mastery of the simple present and present progressive tenses among second-semester Counseling Guidance students at Universitas Prof. Dr. Hazairin, SH, Bengkulu. The purpose of the study is to assess students ability to use these tenses correctly in both written and spoken forms. A mixed-methods approach was employed, consisting of a grammar test to evaluate students' written proficiency and structured interviews to assess their spoken usage. The results revealed that while students showed relatively high proficiency in using the simple present tense, their performance with the present progressive tense was weaker. Common errors identified included confusion between the two tenses, omission of auxiliary verbs, and incorrect verb forms. These findings suggest that students have a solid grasp of the simple present tense but face difficulties with the present progressive tense, largely due to the absence of similar tense forms in their native language. The study concludes that targeted grammar instruction, particularly focused on the present progressive tense, is essential. It also recommends incorporating task-based learning and form-focused instruction to enhance grammatical accuracy. The findings offer valuable insights into tense acquisition among Indonesian EFL learners and have implications for improving English grammar teaching practices at the university level.

Abstract

Note-taking strategies are essential for students to understand the meaning of the conversations or audio files they hear. Therefore, the researchers conducted this study to find out how students perceive the use of note-taking strategies in listening process. This study was based on qualitative research. 24 students from an English Education department were selected to participate in this study. This study used questionnaires as a data collection technique. After data collection, the researchers conducted a descriptive analysis of the data following the process of reading or remembering, describing, and classifying. The results of this study indicate that students have a good awareness of using note-taking strategies in listening classroom. The students used note-taking strategies while listening to understand and remember each point of the information that was hear. It acts as a tool for developing working memory, focusing attention, and identifying important ideas within the information presented. The act of writing down information strengthens memory and helps students recall key details later. Students were focused on main points, paraphrase some ideas in their own words, and use symbols/color-coding to highlight important information in listening subject. Furthermore, using note-taking strategies in listening comprehension has many benefits, such as helping students retain information better, grasp key points, paraphrasing information, organizing notes with headings and lists, review previously learned material, and can improve students’ motivation, and increase students’ listening comprehension. As it is known that note taking can be a good strategy in learning due to its function and advantages in listening classroom.
