Abstract

The design of this research was descriptive quantitative study. The researcher used reading test as the instrument to get the research data. Population of the research was taken from the seventh grade students of SMP NU Al-Amnan Bangorejo 2015/2016 Academic Year, because there is only one class of the seventh grader. Based on the result of the test, the percentage score of the seventh grade students at SMP NU Al-Amnan Bangorejo are 60% students categorized as poor, 36% students categorized as good and 4% student categorized as excellent. One student who got the perfect score test had no difficulty in making interrogative sentences both using Verb2 and Tobe2. Nine students who got the good category in percentage of students reading test score having problems on the using Tobe2 (was and were) and have to add (–ed) in regular verb form and no (-ed) in irregular verb form. The rest of the 15 students who got poor category, facing problems on making interrogative sentences use Verb2 and Tobe2. Moreover, based on the researcher observation during the test, the rest 15 students did not do the tests independently.

Abstract

The use of approach or strategy in teaching and learning process was needed to help EFL students in developing their four skills in English. One of the skills that needs to be developed is reading because reading activities include many things, one of which is reading comprehension. The aim of the research was to find the significant influence of narrow reading on reading comprehension of elevent grade students of SMAN 1 Srono in 2018/2019 academic year. The research design was experimental research and the researcher used one group pre-test and post-test design. Before giving a treatment, the respondents were given a pretest. Then the treatment was carried out for 3 meetings. After that the respondents were given test again as post-test. The researcher used purposive sampling to determine the research area. The reasearch area was SMAN 1 Srono. There were 35 students of elevent science 3 as respondents. It was taken by purposive sample. The data was obtained by using multiple choice test. There were 20 questions about topics, moral value, the characteristics, plot of story, the purpose of narrative text and vocabulary, finding synonim and references. The results of T-test showed that there was significant influence on students’ reading comprehension abilities. The value of T-test was 6,674, while the value of T table at the significant level of 5% and degree of freedom 33 was 2,012. It means that the value of T-tes was higher than the value of T table (6,674 > 2,012). Therefore it can be concluded that the narrow reading had significant influence on reading comprehension of elevent grade students of SMAN 1 Srono in 2018/2019 academic year. Based on the results of T-test, the researcher suggested to the English teacher to apply the narrow reading approach in the reading class to make students are more interested and enjoyable to study. The other reseracher are suggested to do the same research with different grade students, school and research design and use the other genres. It is recommended to make experimental research using two group, experimental group and control group.

Abstract

Questioning strategies are the important method for teachers to ask the students by giving the question. The goal of this research was to identify out the type and the level of questioning strategies that used by the English techers in English classroom interaction at SMAN 2 Taruna Bhayangkara in the academic year 2019/2020. This research used descriptive qualitative research design. There were 6 English teachers as the respondents. It determined by using purposive sampling. To collect the data, it taken by using questionnaire and interview. Likert scale was the tool to analyze the data from quistionnaire. To determine the data analysis, it related to eight indicators namely wait time, probing question, balance, participation, prhasing, sequencing, adaptation, and student question. From the data analysis, it offered that questioning strategies always use by the teachers in English classroom interaction. The percentage of wait time was 80.56%, probing question 79.17%, balance 61%, participation 76.39%, phrasing 87.5%, sequencing 80.56%, adaptation 68.06%, student question 73.61%. In addition, the most performed type of questioning strategies was phrasing (87.5%) and based on the Bloom’s Taxonomy, teachers used of model questions in understanding level which has indicated in lower level question. Thus, the English teachers should develop questions in higher level to stimulate students higher order thinking skill.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the students’ oral communication in English of the sixth semester students of English Educational Department PGRI University of Banyuwangi in the Academic Year 2018/2019. This research is a descriptive quantitative. The respondents were the sixth semester students of English Educational Department PGRI University of Banyuwangi. The data were taken by using speaking test. The data of speaking test were analyzed by using percentage formula. The result of the data analysis was students’ problem based on grammar, pronunciation and fluency. Based on the data analyzed by using percentage formula, the first indicator is grammar. The students got the percentage scores about 33,78%. Based on the interval range scores, the percentage of students’ grammar scores was categorized as good. The second indicator is pronunciation. The students got the percentage scores about 33,43%. Based onthe interval range scores, the percentage of students’ pronunciationwas categorized as good. Then, the last indicator is fluency. The students got the percentage scores about 32,78%. From the interval range scores, the percentage of students’ fluency wascategorizedas good.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to know the effect of Spelling Bee game to students vocabulary mastery. This research design was in experimental research. The researcher observed 33 students’ of tenth grade TKJ 2 at SMK NU Mamba’ul Huda. The researcher used pre-test and post-test and those were in the form of multiple choice tests. The data were analyzed statistically by using T-test. Afterward, T-test was analyzed and interpreted with the degree of significances 5% with db = N – 1 = 33-1 = 32 and the T- table is 2,036. The results of T-test analysis was 12,09. The result showed that there was a significant difference between using and without spelling bee game to students vocabulary mastery. Based on the research result, it can be concluded that teaching English vocabulary by Spelling Bee game was effective and gave remarkable progress in students vocabulary mastery, especially in X TKJ 2 at SMK NU Mambaba’ul Huda Tegalsari.

Abstract

This research aims to 1) categorize cultural terms with the theory of translation and culture, 2) analyze translation strategies with the theory of translation strategies and their roles and 3) assess the level of accuracy in translation of cultural terms. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The data in this research are 149 cultural terms, 44 data in the form of words and 105 data in the form of phrases. Data are obtained by documentation, questionnaires and in-depth interview. The results of the research found 19 data of arts, 4 data of clotings, 21 data of culture materials, 52 data of ecology, 39 data of socio-culture and 14 data of society. The translation strategy applied in translating cultural terms are 48 pure borrowing, 15 subtraction, 13 synonym, 6 transposition, structural addition and cultural equivalent respectively 5 data, 1 semantic addition and 1 descriptive equivalent. It is also found the using of couplet strategy, pure borrowing+transposition 40 data, transposition+structural addition 5 data, transposition+semantic addition 5 data, pure borrowing+structural addition and synonym+structural addition 2 data each and pure borrowing+descriptive equivalent 1 data. The role of the translation strategy in producing accurate translations, pure borrowing strategy gave very positive impact on the accuracy of the translation. Meanwhile the less accuracies and inaccuracies occured in translation caused by the using of subtraction strategies, inappropriate synonym strategies, and semantic-addition strategy. The translation accuracy of cultural terms in the Visitor's Guide Book: Majestic Banyuwangi is qualified high level of text accuracy. The accurate translations are 133 data (89,26%), less accurate translations are 14 data (9,4%) and 2 data (1,34%) are inaccurate translations. It can be concluded that the translation resulted is accurate based on the using of translation strategies. They are pure borrowing, structural addition, transposition+structural addition, pure borrowing+structural addition, synonym+structural addition, descriptive equivalent, pure borrowing+descriptive equivalent. It means that Banyuwangi bilingual tourism publication is translated accurately by using those seven strategies.

Abstract

Nowadays, code-mixing phenomenon is commonly used in communication. In this case, people sometimes mix the language into another language in order to get understand and succesful of communication. The objectives of the study are to find out the types and the levels of code-mixing used in “My Stupid Boss part 1” movie. In this study, the researcher focuses on Indonesian, English, and Javanese utterance. This research method used a descriptive qualitative method. It described the results of research that was objectively analyzed by collecting data. The data source was script movie. The researcher used free listening method. Then, the analysis method followed the steps of Miles and Hubarman. The result was displayed on the table of code-mixing and explained with narrative text. The researcher used 58 data from the utterances in the movie that are considered is able to represent of code-mixing. Analysis focused on two types and six levels of code-mixing. There are 12 of inner code-mixing and 54 of outer code-mixing used in this movie. Then, there are 40 of word levels, 18 of phrase levels, 2 of clause levels, 1 of baster level, and 7 of repetition word level.

Abstract

Language is primarily a speech. It is used in a society and it is a social event. People use a language for communication with each other. This research aimed to describe students’ perceptions toward code-switching used by English teacher, and the types of code-switching that used teacher in teaching-learning process. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The respondents were 36 students in SMK Negeri 1 Banyuwangi which determined by used purposive sampling. The data were taken by used documentation and questionnaire. The data from documentation used to analyze the types of code-switching. The data from questionnaire analyzed by using Likert scale. The data analysis was determined based on theory of interest with four indicators. They are effect of code-switching in rising their confidence, learning materials mastery, learning motivation, and interaction in teaching-learning process. The result of documentation show that there are three types of code switching that used by teacher in teaching-learning process. The percentage are tag code-switching (27,55%), inter sentential code-switching (43,87%), and intra sentential code-switching (28,57%). Analysis of questionnaire data showed that the index percentage of students’ perceptions toward code switching used by English teacher was 73% that consists of effect of code-switching in rising students’ confident 75%, analyzing learning materials mastery 77%, learning motivation 73%, and 69% interaction in teaching-learning process.

Abstract

Berbicara merupakan salah satu keterampilan penting pada aspek berbicara yang harus diperhatikan dalam berkomunikasi. Dalam proses belajar bahasa Inggris, banyak pelajar merasa kesulitan mengucapkan bahasa Inggris terutama pada pengucapan vokal. Sementara, pengucapan yang salah dapat mempengaruhi makna dan akan menyebabkan kesalahpahaman. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis jenis kesalahan dalam pengucapan vokal monofthong (monophtong vowels) dan menganalisis kesalahan vokal yang paling sering terjadi pada bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif kuantitatif dan metode cluster random sampling. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMAN 1 GIRI dan responden adalah siswa kelas XI dengan jumlah responden sebanyak 68 siswa dari 2 kelas. Peneliti menggunakan tes lisan dan menggunakan rumus persentase untuk menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jenis kesalahan yang sering dilakukan oleh siswa adalah penggantian dan penyisipan. Kemudian, kesalahan tertinggi yang paling salah diucapkan oleh mereka adalah dalam pengucapan / I / vokal dengan persentase total 97,06%. Siswa disarankan untuk banyak berlatih pengucapan dan para guru disarankan untuk memberikan contoh yang benar dalam mengucapkan kata-kata bahasa Inggris terutama dalam vocal monofthong kemudian memberikan lebih banyak latihan dan latihan kepada siswa. Speaking is one of the essential skills that must be considered in communicating. In learning English, many learners find it difficult to pronounce English, especially on the pronunciation of vowels. At the same time, wrong pronunciation can affect the meaning and cause misunderstanding. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of errors in the articulation of monophthong vowels and the most frequent vowel errors in English. This study used a quantitative descriptive design and cluster random sampling method. This study was conducted in SMAN 1 GIRI, and respondents were students of Class XI, with the number of respondents as many as 68 students from 2 classes. Researchers used oral tests and used percentage formulas to analyze the data. The results showed that the types of mistakes students often make are replacement and insertion. Then, the highest error most mispronounced by them was in the pronunciation of / I / vowels, with a total percentage of 97.06%. Students are advised to practice pronunciation a lot, and teachers are advised to give correct examples in pronouncing English words, especially in vocal monophthong, then give more practice and practice to students.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a descriptive research about study of the vocabulary mastery in identifying prefix and suffix of the second grade students of SMK Telekomunikasi Genteng in the 2021/2022 academic year. The purpose of this research was to find the student’ ability in identifying vocabulary mastery in prefix and suffix. Students at SMK Telekomunikasi Genteng are the population. The researcher chose the second grade students of Teknik Transmisi Jaringan Department as the sample in this research. This research uses a quantitative descriptive method. The instrument used in this research was a multiple choice test. The results showed that the students’ ability in identifying students’ vocabulary mastery in prefix is “good“, categorized with a total of 65,8. The results of students’ ability in identifying students’ vocabulary mastery in suffix is “average” categorized with a total 58,3. Based on the results of the research above, it can be concluded that students at SMK Telekomunikasi, especially the second grade of Teknik Transmisi Jaringan Department, have a “good” category in prefix, it means the students have already understood about some prefix vocabularies. The majority of correct prefix vocabularies place at multiple choice test number 1,9,17 such as: Exchange, input, interconnect. Furthemore, the result of suffix is “average” category, it means the students less of understanding about suffix. The majority of correct suffix vocabularies at multiple choice test number 2 such as: communication.
