Abstract

Abstract

The issue of Islam in Indonesia's foreign policy is generally used as a tool to achieve political interests. At the beginning of independence, Arab countries were the main supporters of Indonesian independence. The rest of the time, the issue of Islam was also used by leaders as a tool to gain political support at the domestic level, as well as to reduce the pressure of public opinion. This article aims to look at the discourse and orientation of Indonesia's foreign policy regarding Islamic issues in the Jokowi era. Using a discourse analysis method, the article found that as a democratic country, the discourse that Indonesia has always built regarding Islam is a humanitarian issue. In addition, there is a transformation occurring that Islam has begun to be used to encourage economic cooperation and build the image of Indonesia's leadership among Muslim countries. Indonesia also began to move from using Islamic discourse only as a political tool, and now, it is used as an opportunity to build cooperation with the Muslim world.

While the trend of cooperation on the globalization era is rising, the cities involvement on the diplomatic activities is increasing. The central government also encourages the paradiplomacy considering the benefits that will return to its state. However, recently, paradiplomacy has also been carried out not only to pursue the economic interests and development aspects but also to fight for security, identity, and sovereignty aspect. Several cities and even autonomous regions have shown the ability to implement and develop their paradiplomacy. This article using qualitative approach to examine sovereign paradiplomacy of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) which was established as an autonomy region within Iraq. The KRG has long demanded for independence and has even been able to expand its paradiplomacy to the Middle East and the world. The KRG's paradiplomacy is successful and strong enough which is can be seen when referendum was be held by KRG in 2017. The KRG has the power of socialization and shared the values as a form of construction that the KRG has carried out for a long time on its paradiplomacy. Abstract

Environmental problems have occurred since the global industry began to progress. Security issues are shifting from traditional security to non traditional security involving environmental issue which have been experienced by all countries at this time. The haze from burning energy around the world is a major contributor to environmental pollution and global warming. Reduction of green land for the industrial sector causes wider effect for environmental security. From these problems, the solutions could be coming from Subnational actors who may potentially support global environmental security. The role of sub-national is needed to encourage various program related to coffee plantation which eventually support environmental sustainability. The large demand for coffee can encourage the planting of more coffee plants and garden shaders, so that the clearing of green land becomes more massive. From these efforts, environmental improvements can be achieved. This Community Service activity uses the method of delivering material from two sources, coffee activists and scholars

Abstract

Indonesia’s national food security is at a critical point due to global supply chain disruptions, fluctuations in strategic commodity prices, and the impact of geopolitical conflicts. This analysis shows that the government’s response emphasizes a combination of domestic strategies and international diplomacy to mitigate these risks. At the domestic level, policies are directed toward food diversification, import substitution, agricultural modernization, optimization of idle land, and strengthening food reserves through food estate programs. However, their effectiveness is hampered by limited infrastructure, technological gaps, and potential environmental degradation. Meanwhile, at the international level, Indonesia is intensifying cooperation through ASEAN, BRICS, and other multilateral forums to secure supplies, expand financing access, and promote technology transfer. This approach aligns with the four pillars of food security defined by the FAO: availability, access, utilization, and stability, which are translated into policies on sustainable production, strengthened distribution and supply chains, nutrition improvement, and guaranteed food access for all social groups. This study underscores that the success of these strategies depends on consistent cross-sectoral implementation and policy synergy at local, regional, and global levels. The findings contribute to the food security literature by highlighting Indonesia’s strategic role in diplomacy to integrate domestic agendas with international cooperation, while also offering an adaptive policy framework in response to geopolitical dynamics and climate change.

Abstract

As global demand for green technologies and renewable energy systems continues to rise, Indonesia has emerged as a strategic actor in the global energy transition due to its vast nickel reserves, estimated at nearly 4 million metric tons. This resource advantage underpins the country’s ambitious nickel downstreaming policy, which is promoted as a cornerstone of green economic transformation and a key driver of the renewable energy transition. However, the implementation of this strategy has generated significant socio-environmental challenges that warrant critical examination. This study analyzes the socio-environmental implications of Indonesia’s nickel downstreaming program, with particular emphasis on its intersection with global green growth narratives. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this research adopts a case study of the nickel mining industry on Wawonii Island, Southeast Sulawesi. Data were analyzed to explore how large-scale extractive activities, driven by the global demand for renewable energy components, reshape local socio-ecological systems. The findings reveal a paradox between the global discourse of sustainable energy transition and the realities experienced at the local level. While nickel downstreaming contributes to national economic growth and supports renewable energy supply chains, it simultaneously exacerbates environmental degradation, threatens coastal ecosystems, and undermines the livelihoods and resource access of local communities. This study highlights the hidden socio-environmental costs embedded within the global energy transition and underscores the need for more inclusive, accountable, and sustainable governance frameworks. Strengthening environmental regulation, ensuring community participation, and integrating social justice principles into resource management are essential to achieving a truly sustainable and equitable energy transition.
